23.01.2022 Hundreds of protesters have gathered at the Perth headquarters of mining giant Rio Tinto after it destroyed a 46-thousand-year-old Aboriginal site in WA’s Pilba...ra region late last month. The organisers have called for the immediate resignation of the current Federal and State Indigenous Affairs Ministers, Ken Wyatt and Ben Wyatt, for allowing the blast to take place under their leadership. The protest began with a traditional smoking ceremony in Central Park in front of Rio Tinto’s offices. Protesters chanted and held signs demanding the protection of sacred Aboriginal land. Protesters argue WA's heritage laws are weak and will allow similar destruction of sacred sites in the future. Organiser Josh Eggington said Rio Tinto knew of the land's importance. "The PKPP (Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura) Aboriginal Corporation has on numerous occasions since 2013 communicated to Rio Tinto the significance of Jukkan Gorge," he said in front of a cheering crowd. Rio Tinto said in 2013 it received approval to destroy the caves but has since apologised for the hurt caused by the blast.
