25.01.2022 Red Card for Community Fox Shoot 2020 results Another successful fox shoot was held across the Shire when 74 foxes, 60 rabbits and 1 cat were culled last Saturday. The Winner Team, Riff Raff lead by Ben Atkins and his fellow team members from Wagin won the $175 kindly sponsored by the Northam Wheatbelt NRM Office with funds received from the State NRM Office. The winning tally was 25 foxes and 26 rabbits with a score of 151 points. Runners up were Dead Eye Dongo team consisti...ng of Shayne and Lee Smith, Malcolm Roberts and visitors who shot 19 foxes and 8 rabbits with a score of 103 points. They received a cash prize of $100, kindly sponsored by Northam Wheatbelt NRM office with funds received from the State NRM Office. Mark Davidson lead the Fence Road Bandits Team minus a couple of his usual crew winning $75 for coming third taking out 11 foxes and 14 rabbits with a score of 69 points, just one point ahead of My drinking team has a fox problem who came in fourth place with 68 points. Prize for third place was also sponsored by Northam Wheatbelt NRM Office with funds received from the State NRM Office. Jamie Frost a committed feral exterminator supported the event doing his own shoot, he was able to cull 3 foxes over the boundary, having missed 5 as they were out of range for him. At least he is aware of where they are roaming and Im sure those ferals will have their roaming days cut short soon! A hearty breakfast was on offer when the crews arrived at the Hall which was also sponsored by Northam Wheatbelt NRM office with funds received from the State NRM Office. Big thank you to Emily who volunteered to cook the breakfast, Keith and Jill who donated eggs and the Shire for organising JB to dispose of the carcases. Hayden also assisted with advertising, promotion & offered his administrative skills in developing a spreadsheet to calculate Tallys. Well done Hayden! Next year, teams will be asked to bring in tails only, a trial that could ease the dreadful stench of a dead fox and lessen the burden of disposing of the carcases. The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (WA) donates $5 for every fox and cat culled (to a capped amount) to Regional Mens Health Initiative. Since the support of the SSAA a total of $53,000 has been raised for Regional Mens Health and a total of $580 can be added to the tally for the cull on Saturday night. See more

22.01.2022 Pic 1 This mass of seed-bearing Bridal Creeper corms has been discovered at Naribin following the burn. It was dug out of the ground and shows a dense mass which is the growth centre for germination when triggered by rain.... The above ground growth sprout from this mass every year and when the mass reaches this size or larger, control of this invasive weed becomes very difficult as spraying does not destroy all thecorms in one year and the mass keeps on multiplying. Pic 2 Underneath the extensive growth of this Bridal Creeper plant lies a mass of corms, hard to detect and harder to control. Please note: As this is a highly invasive environmental weed, Landholders are reminded that it is your responsibility to keep it under control on private property.

22.01.2022 This young echidna was found wandering across the road in the Dongolocking area. They are on the move now, so please be careful if you see them crossing the road. This little one froze as soon as I walked near it and then it started digging in.

13.01.2022 CHECKING OUT TREE HOLLOWS! As a follow up to the Carnaby Cockatoo survey, a monitoring camera was taken into the field recently to check for active nests. Firstly, we had to develop our skills and test the camera before tackling the big job! Sadly, we didn’t find any active Carnaby nests, but observed many gallah’s and 28 parrots popping their heads out of tree hollows (maybe nesting in old Carnaby hollows). With these common birds breeding in the safety of the upper tree hol...lows, it is easy to see why numbers are dominating our agricultural area & bushland. Many thanks to SWCC for the use of the specialised equipment and the Volunteers who braved the bush flies to assist with the monitoring. If you have sited any black cockatoos hanging round woodland on your farm, please contact Claudia on 0429612447 #landcare Sodu ShireofDumbleyung See more

We will return to Nairibin Rock about noon to enjoy our picnic lunch and then do a short walk around Nairibin before finishing at 2 pm. WHAT TO BRING CHAIR HAT & WATER (other drinks will be provided with lunch). RAINCOAT if required. There is shelter if it rains. Please note there are no toilets or tap water at the picnic site, so please come prepared. Thank you all and see you on Saturday!

12.01.2022 For those Landholders that completed the on farm Carnaby cockatoo survey, the next step is to confirm if the nests are active. At the training course conducted by Birdlife Australia we learnt to scratch the trunk with a stick and tap it gently which alerts the bird. If the nest is active the bird will appear at the top of the hollow as it is very curious to see if a predator is climbing the tree. An elongated camera is used to view inside the hollow for eggs. There may be 2 e...ggs, but only one chick is ever reared. The nest can also be taken up by parrots, galahs, corellas and bees, so extreme caution must be taken. If you wish to come along to survey the nest sites please contact Claudia at the Landcare Office. See more
