25.01.2022 Where it all began This was my first commission after finishing my upholstery training. 6 Tubular cantilever chairs by Tubax /Belgium. I was fretting over these as I wanted to get them absolutely perfect. ... Seeing this picture has reminded what journey I have been on since these were delivered back to their owners. Dumped & ditched is endlessly growing- so many exciting projects in the pipeline. 25.01.2022 A good friend just tagged me to this picture. You gotta laugh! It reminds me of a wood block construction my kids would have come up with a few years back. But it is a sad reality that I often uncover in modern furniture. Terrible frames- basically batons loosely hammered together with a few nails holding the entire thing together. Next thing up: Webbing should be no further apart then 2-3 fingers wide- not a hand width apart. Missing here: On top of the webbing should be ...a layer of hessian or other base cloth to prevent the foam from sagging through. Not for nothing these items have such a low price tag. If you cannot afford more expensive new furniture, maybe look into buying well look after antique or vintage pieces that do not require immediate work.

25.01.2022 Judy wanted an eye catcher in her living room. We picked @jamesmalonefabrics for the cushions and matched it with a linen from @designersguild. Et Voilà what a match made in heaven. Bold, fresh and utterly gorgeous this chair will certainly draw attention.

25.01.2022 It has been quiet on here the past few weeks. We have moved the house and workshop while attempting to home school and getting smaller projects processed. The new family home is up and running, the workshop will be from up Monday. WE ARE NOW IN BEAUTIFUL STANWELL PARK in a gorgeous space- please come and visit! 22.01.2022 HEMP SEED OIL This is one of our favourite products: totally natural, easy to use and locally sourced. This hemp seed oil is cold pressed in a certified organic food grade facility, offering superior freshness. The oil is bottled in glass amber bottles that are light and UV protected. You shouldn’t bypass a gorgeous fabric simply because it’s not ‘heavy-duty’. We often have several criteria we use to make our decisions, here are some we think are valuable to consider: type of room, type of furniture, colour, pattern and texture. Like most things we choose to invest in, it’s a ‘big picture’ choice that ultimately co...mes down to you, your needs and the design you prefer. But this time, let’s talk about fabric pilling or lint, if you will, and what you can do about it. I’m sure you’re familiar with the issue both from furniture, bedding and clothing. She originally had come to look at a different chair, but fell head over heels with this French Art deco day bed. 12.01.2022 These absolute gorgeous design chairs by Louis van Teeffelen for Simpla- Lux. Aloysius (Louis) Allegonda van Teeffelen (1921-1972) was a Dutch industrial designer credited with contributing to the midcentury modern design movement in the Netherlands, and is most well-known for his work with the Dutch furniture manufacturer WéBé. We restored the wood, updated the foam and replaced the vinyl with leather.... There is always a fine line between authentically restoring a piece and making design decisions to update the comfort levels. A lot of these mid century dining chairs were originally fitted with sliver thin foam layers on plywood- which made a neat shape but as in comfort levels left often sth to desired for. We tend to use commercially graded firm foam on these sort of chairs to give the highest level of resistance without pumping up the thickness. Personally, I am not a huge fan of vinyl and with recently started to replace a lot of it with upholstery leather. It is great to module and shape, though somewhat thicker than vinyl. 06.01.2022 DETAILING The time spend getting the details right.. hours uncountable for. Small adjustments here, another snip there, redoing this seam to get a even tighter fit. Sometimes it seems endless. It is an integral part of our work and yet so difficult to predict and calculate for.

06.01.2022 BEFORE AND AFTER Why is there such a huge price gap between second-hand, mid-century pieces and already restored furniture? Old furniture can be bought for little money. There are, obviously, differences in particular brands and models, some more sought after than others, which will be reflected the price. ... I get so many inquiries each week and I hear over and over again that people, who have bought cheap second hand furniture or even have been lucky to find some good curb finds, expect not to spend much money on the restoration process. This is a bit of a discrepancy, don't you think? The worse state the pieces are, the more work they need. Which ultimately means the more it will cost to get them restored. We spend a lot of time on getting the pieces to look beyond their former glory. Old furniture is often at the end of their life span. It is a little bit like buying a house for the block of land. You either live in an old mining cottage on the block (don't get me wrong, which can have a lot of charm) or tear it down and rebuild. You paid for the block, does not mean that the architect and builders will work for a discounted rate, Right? It is up to you how you want to live and how much you would like to spend on your dwelling. Comparing a new build, with insolation, solar panels, modern kitchen and bathroom to an eighty year old, draughty building, is comparing apples with pears. Logically there will be a big price gap. This price gap is what you find when you buy our furniture. Our pieces have been uniquely designed with the framework of mid century furniture. We only use premium interior materials as well as relatively expensive upholstery fabric to guarantee the longevity of each single piece. We are making furniture that will last another lifetime.

05.01.2022 What a shame this stonewash canvas range by Designers Guild has been discontinued. It is great plain 'summery' fabric. It was perfect to freshen up these vintage footstools that had been reupholstered in this rather gaudy fabric. Must have been a thing, as I come across this phenomena a lot. Mid century furniture reupholstered in the 80's with floral patterned fabrics.

With our imminent move and lockdown in the air I delivered the chairs straight away. Hence we could not get a picture of them with their fabulous new cushions in the studio. 04.01.2022 Such a fabulous piece! Sold this French artdeco daybed and custom upholstered it for the client in this lush emerald green velvet @the_textile_company. Combined with Bolsters in leafy velvet print @linwood_fabric it is a winner. I remember delivering this a year ago, just as the bushfires kicked off. Like many of my customers in this area, their house is not far from the bush and I got cold sweats just imagining that all the lovely pieces I had restored in the area could go... up in flames. Luckily our area was not affected by last years mega blasts. My thoughts go out to all those affected who have lost more than 'just' their things. Loved furniture can mean so much more: identity , memories and feelings.

03.01.2022 What a fabric! I almost went blind and certainly confused trying to pattern match the fabric on this project. We did eventually nail it and delivered it this yet another happy customer who will finish the woodwork herself.

01.01.2022 This gorgeous Parker telephone bench got a second lease of life. We refreshed the woodwork with some nourishing oil, compressed areas where moisture let the chipboard beneath the veneer expend and filled chipped areas and scratches with wax. The seat has been covered in a new foam pad and finished in natural coloured soft leather. What is not to love?

01.01.2022 This 1969 drinks cabinet, made by Australian Mid-century powerhouse Chiswell is nothing short of a show stopper. If only furniture could talk, imagine the wild parties it has seen and stories it could tell. It features felt lined draws, a rack for 5 of your best bottles and a glass backed mixing station. 01.01.2022 What a journey these chairs have been on. Quite literally Dimitri flew 6 mid century dining chairs back home from the US, dismantled in a suitcase and this is how I got them. Two big trolley suitcases full of legs, backrests, seat pads and screws. A full restoration needed: the varnish was old, the layers of the plywood had come apart in places and needed to be glued back together. The upholstery was going be more modern and comfortable. The wood lighter to match a new oak ...dining table. I cannot stress enough how much work it is to sand down seemingly little amount of wood. Each leg has four sides, each side will be sanded 3-4 times in different from coarse to find grain. Corners and the curves are tricky with a sanding machine. I am talking many hours for a set of 6 dining chairs. The plywood was less than perfect, it had quite some stains and in many areas the top layer was very grainy. The was goal to keep the wood light and not cover any stains and imperfections with a darker stain. How far do you go to achieve the result you would like? Our first step was to bleach the stains in the wood as much as possible. I still had to make a call on what to do about the stripey grain showing on some of the back rest and legs. It was either adding a layer of veneer or taking the layer off. I ended up to areas I literally sanded the grainy layers away in some key areas and applied a layer of natural stain over the entirety of the wood. The natural stain is an amazing product, which cuts the orange tang in the timber back. I sealed the wood a couple of coats of matt hard wax oil from @whittle_waxes. Ps we are now selling their products in our shop and online ;-) The original upholstery was a layer of cotton wadding, which has no bounce. The challenge was to optimise the sitting comfort without impacting the shape too much, which is always a balancing act. The fabric choice came down to Brink @svenssoninteriortextiles. A beautiful and extremely hard-wearing wool mixture. A lot of work has gone into these darling chairs, but they are ready to rock the world for another few decades.
