25.01.2022 The million dollar question, does one start feeding or hope that whatever the sheep are eating, that there is plenty left. Sheep are currently in excellent shape but the pastures are just dry hard minimal stubble. I assume they are licking up the remaining herbage from cyclone Trevor. This time last year, all sheep had been on full feed for 4 months.

21.01.2022 Leading Sheep is hosting a field day at the Qantas Museum, Longreach on 5 December and I am giving a brief presentation on how I use benchmarking in my Wool Shed. Here is an example of questions that arise from the data. If the trend is strongly up for staple length, and given in the last few years I mostly shore old MA ewes or weaners, do I need to move to an accelerated shearing program to avoid the discounts for over length wool? Will I be able to reduce shed labour cost...s if I do this? Looking forward to some great interaction on the 5th. https://www.facebook.com/events/2574265352639055?name=Shearing+shed+workshop+-+Longreach%2C+5+December.&event_id=2574265352639055&sfns=mo

19.01.2022 Merry Christmas

17.01.2022 A wrap up of the Leading Sheep workshop held last month in Longreach.

17.01.2022 Voice over whilst we preg test some mixed age ewes

16.01.2022 Recently did a Flock Profile test to rank my flock genetics against the Sheep CRC database. Sampled 20 randomnly selected maiden ewes and used some Alflex TSU units to collect DNA. By comparing my performance against the database, we have some great news and critical information for my current genetics and where we head in the future. Here are some of the results. This years sale rams are the brothers to the ewes we tested.

15.01.2022 Probably not the first person to fly a drone over sheep but the new drone cameras are fantastic at getting a peek at the condition of some of our sheep. These big rising 2yo wethers are looking great despite not being fed. Shorn mid-December. I was over 2km away when I took this picture.

14.01.2022 Another great day in the yards pregtesting ewes with Damien Pollett of DAMO'S PREG TESTING SERVICES. (0447049057) Looking like we will need to keep selling and want to look after our pregnant ewes.

14.01.2022 The dart throwers (weather forecasters) are suggesting we are only a few weeks away from the monsoon. The WX maps website is particularly promising. As you can see from one of my pasture monitoring sites, we could use a break. Over the past 3 calendar years, Dunblane received 2%, 4% and in 2019, 20%percentile rainfall totals. 20%percentile means that in 80/100 years you would expect more rain. This has been a very dry run indeed.

05.01.2022 Just starting to sell our clip and loving the premiums for unmulesed wool. Currently averaging a 15% premium over current market valuation despite this year's ok SS, high VM and lower yields. Our sale rams are a great opportunity for western QLD wool producers to reduce wrinkle but lift fleece values and access the market premiums for Ceased and Non mulsed wool.

03.01.2022 Finally got under some good rain, 25mm and still raining. Havent we wasted some time this week, looking at BOM radar and web weather forecasts. This heat storm wetting a football area down Harney Lane looked fantastic on the screen but really amounted to nothing. I reckon the Longreach BOM radar can spot a bead of sweat at 100km.

01.01.2022 David Counsell and Georgia, the rousabout, weighing fleeces as they come off the board at shearing in December 2019.
