24.01.2022 I’ve raised a few Queens lately, here we have a virgin Queen being released. I’ll check in a week or so to see whether she is laying eggs.
24.01.2022 And just like that my ‘baby’ has left home, wow that was a quick 16 days.
24.01.2022 Upcoming Landline feature.
23.01.2022 Well you have all heard about a Fish Shoal, how about a Bee Shoal? These girls are working some Bee feed, you know it’s a tough season when your feeding in late October.
23.01.2022 From this, to this, to this.
22.01.2022 100% correct... a tough season indeed. I checked 60 hives yesterday and I’d estimate they had about 50kg across the lot of them (within the supers). On that note I’m giving myself two weeks off. See you all at the beach. *** Serious note, the lack of Australian Honey supplies will see pressure on imports, please read the fine print & buyer beware ***
18.01.2022 Well I guess this answers the question as to whether my bees were destroyed by the Port Macquarie fires a few weeks back. A before and after shot.
17.01.2022 It also extends way down the east coast of NSW.
17.01.2022 Further to my last post; as you can see it’s not my best effort grafting with only two being successful, I suspect I missed a Queen cell within the parent hive.
17.01.2022 Bee swarm that’s about as easy as they come, granted my execution into the box wasn’t perfect but you get the idea how it’s done!
16.01.2022 The gun is always loaded, the horse always kicks and a lit Smoker must always be respected. Growing up on a sugar cane farm certainly taught me this fun fact. https://www.abc.net.au//canberra-beard-bushfire-/11929490
13.01.2022 Each year I attend the Sydney Anzac Day Service followed by some comradeship with some some very close friends; this year is, of course, very different; to all the fallen and those still in the fight, Lest We Forget.
12.01.2022 I posted this photo a while back but it’s just such a cracking hive I had to post again.
12.01.2022 Thanks Glen from Glenbernie Orchard who basically dropped everything and slashed a paddock for me today; with the upcoming fire conditions we felt it wise that I relocate them from a bush site I had them in. For those who didn’t know I lost 30 hives a few weeks ago due to a bushfire.
12.01.2022 Queen breeding 101 - ‘Grafting’ day. There is a bit of pre-work required in getting your hive ready before you graft, but for the purpose of this exercise I’ve skipped a few steps. I’ll post another set of photos in a few days as to how successful my efforts were.
08.01.2022 After a hard month or so crop pollinating the girls have relocated to a property near Bathurst; the landscape is absolutely fantastic and within minutes of being unloaded they started working the multitude of flowers available to them.
08.01.2022 Brood from one of the Queen’s I raised last season..... yep, considering this is Day 2 of Spring, I’m pretty chuffed with this result.
07.01.2022 Don’t you just love breeding your own Queens. Major advantages being that you are in control, you select the hive, temperament and production qualities.
05.01.2022 Big ‘cut out’ today! I picked up this compost bin from an elderly gentleman who was leaving his home of many years, being the last warm day for a while I thought it time to relocate them. I’m really not sure if the Queen made it. Time will tell.
04.01.2022 Stapleton Family Meats Gymea A big shout out to Mark and the team at Stapleton Family Meats Gymea, Mark understands how tough our Bees are doing it in the drought; he was happy to wait for quality Australian honey to come in rather than use a substitute. Why not pick up your Xmas ham from Mark and support the team who supports local primary production.
04.01.2022 As a Beekeeper I’ve been practicing ‘social distancing’ for years; forget 1.5 metres..... I’m lucky to have people come within 150m
02.01.2022 Snack time for the girls. During winter pollen and nectar can be in short supply. To make sure they have enough to eat I feed them pollen & pollen supplements, in doing so it maintains a healthy population. A healthy population is in a much better position to avoid any disease along with putting them in the best possible position once spring arrives.
02.01.2022 Good to see the Governor General sporting a Dunc’s Honey Jacket & Gloves, well done GG.
