08.01.2022 John Bell is one of Australia’s most acclaimed theatre personalities, founding the Bell Shakespeare Company in 1990 as well as acting in and directing some of the country’s most innovative productions. In this discussion, John will reflect on Shakespeare’s presentation of Jews, particularly Shylock, in ‘The Merchant of Venice’. He will examine what this might reveal about the bigotry and Judeophobia that existed in Europe and in English literature at the time. As part of the session, John will give a dramatic reading of a couple of Shylock’s speeches.

03.01.2022 Acclaimed UK photographer Harry Borden’s traveled the globe for five years photographing hundreds of survivors of the holocaust and documenting their haunting and powerful stories of courage and perseverance. So moved by the photos and stories in ‘Survivor’, Mount Scopus Year 10 Judaic Studies & History Teacher Lisa Procel incorporated the book into her holocaust studies curriculum and encouraged students to write to those in the book. This session is facilitated by journal...ist and producer Miriam Hechtman who partnered with Harry for the US and Israel chapters until its final realization to book. Harry Borden (UK) and Lisa Procel (Melb) join Miriam to discuss the book’s conception, the idea of photography as a historical artifact, and the importance of how we teach Holocaust remembrance to the next generation.
