25.01.2022 March 7, 1965 - hundreds of civil rights activists marched out of Selma on Highway 80, lead by John Lewis and Hosea Williams to protest segregation and demonstrate the desire of African American’s right to vote. Protestors were confronted by state troopers and a county posse at Edmend Pettus Bridge where violence broke out, instigated by the troopers. 17 marchers were hospitalised, including John Lewis and march organiser Amelia Boynton, and 50 were treated for lesser injurie...s. The events were publicised in the media, gaining worldwide coverage. This day is known as Bloody Sunday by the African American community. It was the first of three incredibly important Selma to Montgomery marches which had a powerful impact on the civil rights movement. After seeing the events of Bloody Sunday on TV, President Lyndon B. Johnson met with Governor George Wallace in Washington to discuss the civil rights situation in Alabama. On the 15th of March, President Johnson presented the bill for Voting Rights Act to congress; a bill that was passed on the 6th of August that year - a monumental achievement made possible by the organisers and activists who fought so hard for the rights of African Americans. #selma #civilrights #bloodysunday #johnlewis #ameliaboynton #hoseawilliams #LBJ #votingrightsact #1965 #organise #campaign #activists

24.01.2022 Born on this day, Martin Luther King Jr would have turned 97. His words and actions continue to inspire progressives across the world to enact change and improve lives. Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. #MLK #progressives #bornthisday

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Chief Minister Michael Gunner, Branch Secretary Anthony Brereton, Territory Labor and the volunteers of the Community Action Network for a successful election campaign that returned a Territory Labor government. In 2019, Dunn Street had the privilege of partnering with Territory Labor, to develop organising strategies and train Labor field organisers and volunteers and empower them with leadership skills ahead of this critical election campaign. Amid campai...gn uncertainties imposed by COVID restrictions, it was the work of these organisers and volunteers that drove Labors unprecedented ground game that organised thousands of supporters to hold meaningful conversations with neighbours on the doors and phones across the Territory. On Saturday night, Labor leader Michael Gunner acknowledged their historic part in his governments re-election. To Labors Community Action Network, our red army, you legends! This year alone, 65,000 direct conversations about the things that really matter. Thank you. Dunn Street is proud to have supported and partnered with Territory Labor and the leaders of their grassroots organising movement - the Community Action Network.

15.01.2022 All eyes are on Georgia as, in less than 24 hours, the state decides the future of the US Senate. Democrats, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, maintain a lead in the polls, but it is still the Republicans race to lose. The Senate currently stands at 50 Republicans and 48 Democrats. Democrats must win both races to gain control of the senate. Republicans only have to win one of the two races to maintain control.

14.01.2022 Dunn Street is turning two! In the past 12 months Dunn Street has lived our values. We partnered with one of Australia’s largest trade unions to design and implement a national digital organising strategy that enabled the union to support its members through COVID and grow its membership.... In the fight for gender equity in male dominated workplaces, Dunn Street supported women leaders to organise their resources and build the power needed to bring urgent change. In partnership with Australian Labor International, we crossed the Indian ocean to deliver critical leadership and organising training with our comrades in the Maldives Social and Democratic Labor Party. In the lead up to the 2020 Queensland election, we worked with Labor candidates to develop their public narrative, and build a meaningful connection with their communities through the story of self, us and now. We worked with progressive businesses in the renewable energy industry to develop community organising strategies that will grow a coalition in support of a sustainable future. We gave voice to the values of inspiring social democrats and progressives across the globe with another podcast season of Socially Democratic (available each Friday!) And we moved into our new office space that doubles as a set from a Wes Anderson film. In 2021 Dunn Street will continue to work with folks that want to organise communities, inspire hope and build power from the ground up. Let us work with you. Reach out at dunnstreet.com.au

05.01.2022 As our community retreats homeward to slow the spread of coronavirus, heres a way to organise in your community, overcome physical separation and support one another over the coming months. 1. Write a short letter to your neighbours introducing yourself 2. Invite them to join a WhatsApp group (or any online chat platform) for everyone in your building (on your floor, on your block or street)... 3. Use the group chat to stay in touch with one another, support one another, build relationships, and pool your resources to get through the months ahead As Marshall Ganz reminds us, leadership in organising is accepting responsibility for enabling others to achieve shared purpose under conditions of uncertainty. **Encourage other to organise in their communities by sharing this post.** Tell us how youre getting organised and pooling resources in your community to support one another and we will share it across our social media platforms. Remember, Dont agonise. Organise.

02.01.2022 The Dunn Street story starts with the names of McArdle, Deane and Donnelly. These are the names of Irish immigrants that fled great hunger and the crown for nineteenth century, industrial Glasgow. Though they experienced racism, poverty and unemployment, through organisations like the Catholic workers clubs, trade unions, the Labour Party and the Celtic Football Club they organised and found their voice.... Seeking out better opportunities and new beginnings, their sons and daughters took to the seas once more. Like Kelly, Keating and Carmody, they came to Australia. The Irish, along with so many other migrant stories helped shape our nation. So, on this seventeenth of March, all be it in smaller, isolated gatherings, we celebrate the feast of Saint Patrick. From Melbourne to Boston, Cork to Queens, Dublin to the streets of Free Derry, raise your parting glass to the wearing of the green. Happy Saint Patricks Day
