21.01.2022 APG Online Sale...Lot 50 Earlier this month we took the 2yo filly (Modern Mistress x A Rocknroll Dance) up the road to the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital to be scoped prior to sale. Given the current circumstances of travel restrictions, and as we are selling this filly untried but started, we felt this gave confidence to the prospective buyer but also us as sellers. The report was all clear- a perfectly working larynx and lovely wide, clear airways.... And an easy float trip to boot! For more photos/video of this filly, head to our website: dunroaminstandardbreds.com #APG

17.01.2022 Yearling colt (Another Day USA x Well Said) enjoying some play time! #apg

15.01.2022 Introducing the first of our draft of 8 for the upcoming APG Melbourne Yearling Sales, this is "Richo" - a colt by Well Said out of the Canadian mare Another Day.

14.01.2022 "Frozen semen? - that's the leftover stuff they chuck in the freezer at the end of the day, isn't it?" In the bid to secure mare bookings last season, frozen semen copped a bit of a hiding, perhaps unfairly. While not for every mare, or every stallion for that matter, frozen semen remains a very useful tool in the breeders toolbox. This season particularly, with covid 19 lurking and throwing the world into disarray, it is comforting to have the luxury of having semen sitting... in the shed waiting for your mare to be ready. To optimize your chances of ending the breeding season with an in foal mare and a wallet that doesn't require life support, there are 3 questions you should answer: 1. Are you using a skilled service provider? The timing of insemination in relation to ovulation is crucial for success with frozen semen and so requires more intensive management of the mare. Additionally, the thawing procedure should be conducted with sensitivity to avoid damage to sperm cells. The more skilled the operator, the higher the pregnancy rate will be. 2. Is the semen of good quality? The quality semen product will largely determine whether or not you get a pregnancy. A highly fertile stallion will achieve good conception rates regardless of the manner of insemination and less experienced operators can achieve good pregnancy rates with good semen and suitable mares. 3. Is your mare suitable? Selection of a suitable mare is very important. Older mares that have had many foals are generally considered unsuitable for frozen semen service, due to increased incidence of fluid clearance issues, uterine infection or the presence of multiple uterine cysts. Mares with poor breeding history (failed to achieve a pregnancy in the previous season, mares that have slipped pregnancies and mares that have been empty for more than 2 seasons) are also generally unsuitable. This is not to say these mares won't achieve a pregnancy with frozen semen, but it is less likely. Bacterial or fungal nfections in the mare are not always detectable on ulrasound examinatiin and performing a uterine swab and culture before breeding will help elininate an unnecessary negative test. Answering yes to the three questions above will optimize your chance of success with frozen semen breeding.
