05.01.2022 MEDIA STATEMENT 31 January, 2020 For publication February. DOUBLE CELEBRATIONS IN DUNSBOROUGH... The Dunsborough Arts Festival and the Dunsborough Arts Society are both having significant birthdays this year, and will join forces next month as part of their celebrations. The Festival, on the March long weekend by the Dunsborough Progress Association, is marking its 20th anniversary, while the Dunsborough Art Society is celebrating its 50th birthday. Festival Coordinator Jacquie Happ said the Festival was very pleased to welcome the Art Society back after its highly successful participation last year. It was the first time they had taken part, and lots of people enjoyed their art workshops on the foreshore. It’s a good partnership, particularly as the Progress Association works closely with the Society throughout the year. The Society’s contribution last year helped spread the stretch and reach of the Festival, Mrs Happ said. Art Society spokeswoman Mary Atkinson said members had had an exciting time at last year’s Festival, gaining new members and increasing awareness of its Art rooms and activities. Our community painting on the foreshore was highly successful. We also had loads of visitors who went on from the Foreshore to see our Festival exhibition at our Art Rooms and Gallery adjoining the old Dunsborough Hall, Ms Atkinson said. We will holding our community painting workshop again on the Foreshore, encouraging the public to pick up a paintbrush and have a go. The theme this year will be ‘underwater’. We’ve already painted background canvases, and people can add to them. Last year we had five canvases on the foreshore that were completely filled. So this year we will have eight, Ms Atkinson said. Jacquie Happ said next month’s Arts Festival would celebrate its 20th Anniversary with a big Fireworks display on the Sunday night of the March Long Weekend. We are excited about the Fireworks, which are now in the planning stage. I think it may be the first time Dunsborough has had an official Fireworks display! Local identity Dianne Laurance is sponsoring them, and she is really looking forward to putting on an impressive celebratory show. Mrs Happ said. /2 The Festival’s Sculpture by the Bay has received a record number entries from artists in many areas of the State, so Dunsborough locals and March Long Weekend visitors can look forward to the best Dunsborough Arts Festival yet, Mrs Happ said. 01.01.2022 I am writing to express my appreciation to your members for including me in your week of art at McAlinden. Pam and I have enjoyed ourselves immensely thanks to the convivial attitude of the persons attending and the isolated location. The food provided by the volunteers was wonderful and proved to be a gourmet’s delight. There were also a variety of beverages consumed all in the name of taste testing. Most of the samples tested were quite large. Laurel, Phyllis and John did a... grand job with the organising of the week and thanks to the Hill’s guidance we found the location tucked away in the bush. I even saw, at first hand, some art work being undertaken for a few hours in the week with the artist’s expressing their interpretation of a grotesque sculptured styrene mask wearing an ash blonde wig. As I have been told so often ‘art is all in the eye of the beholder’. In the evenings many tales of yore were told relating to travels and adventures in the good old times. It was amazing how travelled the group have been throughout Oz and the world. Bay also introduced a card game that proved to be the complete antithesis to my character. In this game you frequently were required to deliberately lose to actually win. I still haven’t worked out whether my lowest score actually meant that I won or came last. My highlight was finding beautiful orchids in the bush. I must admit that I had to place the finger of some of the artist’s on the flowers of the Midge Orchids before they realised that they were actually flowers. Still there were quite a few good photos taken of the finds. In the beginning we had 8 (4 couples) attend the camp and then another couple for a day visit. However, only 2 couples remained by Thursday night. There were plenty of beds but on the first night our bed was found to be concave and we both kept rolling into the centre. Whilst this may have been a good excuse a while ago we needed sleep now; different bed the next night. The slow combustion stove was a godsend to keep the place warm (thank goodness) as the first two days were quite wet and cold. During the rest of the week the days were great but the nights still cold. Thank you John for a great job in managing the power supply, heating and hot water supply. I must admit to my reticence at first when Pam introduced the idea of me attending an art camp, but I am certainly glad I did. Thank you to the DAS for allowing me the opportunity. With very best wishes. Peter Luff Attendees - Pam and Peter Luff, Bay and Rob Wilson, Glen and Peter Knight, Phyllis and John Hill plus special visitors on the Thursday, Margaret and Alvin Sargant. Our thanks to Ken Hart for allowing us the run of his farm and house for the camp. PHOTOGRAPHS Peter Luff, including shots taken by his drone. John Hill
