24.01.2022 Today is International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is #BalanceforBetter. The theme encourages us to all collaborate to bring about gender equality, raisin...g awareness against bias, and working with young people to foster respectful relationships. On this day, White Ribbon Australia would also like to acknowledge that the social movement to prevent men’s violence against women has been built on the tireless efforts of women and women-led organisations throughout history, internationally and in Australia. We support our brothers and sisters in continuing the work today and for the future. See more

18.01.2022 We're always on the lookout for ways to improve our safety performance at Durock Drilling and our process is about to get another kick along. We have now implemented the QHSE Skytrust system to help us better manage our safety commitments. All our SWPs, Safety Procedures, Inspections, Risk Assessments and Auditing can now be managed electronically. This will make it so much easier for the guys in the field to always have safety information and resources right where/when they need it.

02.01.2022 DRILL RIG WORKER SUSTAINS FACIAL FRACTURES IN INCIDENT (NSW Resources Regulator) No one wants to see their friends and co-workers injured. So many incidents are preventable, and we need to work hard to ensure we identify risks early on so that remedial actions are put in place and no one is injured. Incident: A build-up of stored energy was released in an uncontrolled manner, resulting in a haul plug and rope socket accelerating upwards, hitting a drill rig offsider in th...e face, fracturing his nose and cheek bone. The driller activated the hydraulic winch to lift the haul plug and rope socket to allow the offsider to attach a short section of drill pipe casing. The shoulder of the pin attaching the haul plug to the rope socket caught on the edge of C-section a foot clamp table, which allowed tension to build up in the winch rope. The force was sufficient to bend the 25 mm frame of the table, chamfer the shoulder off the connecting pin and pull the threaded bolts of the retaining cap from the connecting pin. The connecting pin released from the haul plug and rope socket resulting in the rope socket, haul plug and pin being ejected upward due to the sudden release of the stored energy. Contributing Factors: The driller was new to the company and elevated to the position of main driller due to the permanent driller being injured, the driller/offsider were not aware that the winch rope was under tension and the offsider was standing in an unprotected position directly in line with the stored energy release. None of these risks were highlighted prior to undertaking the work. Reading through incidents of this nature, it’s a reminder that all plant/equipment risk assessments must identify the potential for an uncontrolled release of stored energy in winch ropes and other operating systems.
