19.01.2022 Private Hilton Brooks, 26th Battalion AIF - Duty to the King! (A different time ...) - - - - - - - - - - When the young Australian soldiers set off for war, many were keen to fight for His Majesty, King George V. In the early days of their arrival in France, the men were delighted at a chance to see him.The Aussie troops always made sure they wore their distinctive slouch hats whenever possible so the King would know who they were.... Here he is pictured inspecting Australian troops during a visit to France later in the war. He is accompanied by General Birdwood. On 10 August 1916, the 7th Brigade AIF got the word that His Royal Highness was coming to inspect them and there was a general 'flap' as the men made ready. Hilton Brooks got caught up in the excitement as per 'Duty Nobly Done': "By 2.00 pm the various 7th Brigade units were lined up on either side of the main road, two deep. Hilton stood in the rear line of his battalion, but still had a clear view of the royal route. When the appointed time approached, there were excited murmurs in the crowd as the King and Prince of Wales processed along the main road on their fine horses. To Hilton’s delight, the King passed barely 20 yards in front of him and, so he fancied, looked directly at him. His heart swelled with pride and he shook with excitement at the tale he would have to tell his family. Soon the royal entourage disappeared from sight, followed by a chorus of cheers from the men, still standing stiffly to attention. Now, more than ever, Hilton was firmly convinced of where his duty lay." #dutynoblydone

12.01.2022 Henry Bonsell 'Chick' Holloway, 15th Battalion AIF - - - - - - - - - - I have been perusing a heap of old photographs on the State Library of Queensland site lately (a tremendous collection) and who should I find? A fresh-faced, young Chick Holloway at Enoggera camp in 1915. He is centre with the broad-brimmed hat. Alas, I did not have this wonderful photograph when the book was published (perhaps in the second run), but it is a joy to have it nonetheless. ... His pals are unidentified, but the caption reads that the couple at the back were visiting the camp and brought scones and cakes. A fine afternoon no doubt. Chick eventually made his way to the Western Front where he first went into action in the Pozieres sector in August 1916. Check out his story and that of the other 10 lads in 'Duty Nobly Done'. #dutynoblydone #anzac
11.01.2022 Battalion Colour Patches of ‘Duty Nobly Done’ - - - - - The 11 men from my family served in 9 units during the Great War, 8 of the units being infantry battalions. Let me know if your relative served in these fine units. The unit colour patch was 2-toned and was a badge of pride and honour. In the Great War it was worn on the upper sleeve of the tunic and depending on the division, was various shapes. ... Private Eric Holloway (pictured, second from the left) was with the 41st Battalion. Here he is with a couple of 42nd Battalion lads. One of the 11, W/O Arthur Miscamble, was with the the 1st Australian General Hospital (pictured); brown diamond with green horizontal rectangle. Those who served on Gallipoli had the distinction of a metal or embroidered 'A' (for Anzac) device on their patches (generally issued from late 1916).

04.01.2022 ** REVIEW TIME ** DUTY NOBLY DONE Colonel Arran Hassell CSC, Commandant Land Warfare Centre, Kokoda Barracks, CANUNGRA - "This is the finest modern account of Australia’s involvement in the Great War." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "In life, periodically, we gain exposure to art, theatre or a manuscript that touches us to our core. Duty Nobly Done is one of these pieces of art; it is a gift to all Australians. ... Engaging, emotional and raw, Duty Nobly Done elegantly details a family’s journey through the horrors of World War One. It is a story of young Australian boys becoming men, a fledgling Army becoming a renowned fighting force, and a new nation taking its place on the world stage. The realities of war are laid bare, the emotions are raw, and the sights, sounds and smells are palpable. Duty Nobly done tells of ordinary Australians rising to the unfathomable demands of war in nearly all of the major battles of World War One. It is an incredible patchwork of young men navigating their way and attempting to survive hell on earth. Duty Nobly Done is not just a Holloway story, it is a story of all of our families, our Army and our nation. It stirs pride in our forebears, our Army and what it is to be Australian. This is the finest modern account of Australia’s involvement in the Great War."
01.01.2022 Some light reading from the Army. - - - - - - - - - - Honoured again by the Army in being chosen as one of three judges for The Cove - Australian Army Writing Competition: "How can we simplify the Army so that time saved can be reinvested into becoming Future Ready?"
