22.01.2022 A SAILORS VENTRILOQUIST DUMMY FROM HMS BARHAM In 1991 I received a call from a young lady in Orange, NSW. She explained that she had in her possession a ventriloquist dummy of a sailor in uniform wearing an RN cap bearing the tally...HMS Barham. Her father had been a P.O. onboard during WW2 and had entertainment the crew every Christmas with a cabaret! He left the ship about 6 months before she was sunk by torpedo in the Mediterranean with a huge loss of life. On repatriation to Australia, his dummy accompanied him home. The dummy was kindly donated to our museum and greets visitors as they arrive!

13.01.2022 WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE MARITIME MODEL MUSEUM Tripadvisor November 2017 A hidden experience... An extremely interesting place to visit. Lots of small gifts/souvenirs to buy and the staff there are knowledgeable. Lots to learn as well. Warwick D Tripadvisor 3 October 2017 A shop full of history and surprises. This small shop spilling out onto the arcade has an amazing assortment of everything Maritime. Once inside theres a treasure-trove of fascinating objects both small and large, including paintings, pictures, models and uniforms to name just a few. Certainly worth a look. I loved it. 909lorraineh Tripadvisor 27 January 2017 So interesting Love the models and instruments on display, he gentleman there is very interesting when he describes the artifacts/items from so long ago, a great visit waffles10120 Tripadvisor 11 March 2016 Hard to find... EASY to Enjoy! I love the old salt who is Capt. of this land-locked gem! Verbal history and folklore come with every showcase, and the Capt. is a walking maritime history book. I tried to stump him with a query about the famous J Class sailing yachts of the America's Cup during the 1900s... and he altered my 'course: I was simply a deck hand instead of the expert... He kindly, put this crew-member in his proper berth! It's in an odd place... I think it should have marina-front breezes but I think the rent's cheap there... America over easy

11.01.2022 Since 1983 we have built 6 models of 'Australia II' but never a model of the yacht that lost the 'America's Cup' ! Well now as you can see, we have remedied that situation. The owner of one of our 'Australia II' models commissioned us to build a model to the same scale. After a month of searching we located original plans in Holland and started on our work about six months ago. The results of our labour you can see here. Is this the only model of 'Liberty' in Australia? The ...only other model we know of is in the 'New York Yacht Club'.So if anyone out there would like to order one..........we are ready to go !!! 04.01.2022 n Sydney it’s been the Australian version of what the British refer to as a pond yacht that has held much of our interest over the years These are model skiffs range from four inches right up to two feet in overall length between perpendiculars. Some are worth more than $5,000 today. In the first half of the last century they were sailed in the main by the crews of the full size skiffs; when they weren’t out racing on the harbour in their skiffs they’d race the models either... on the harbour, the lake at Centennial Park or on inland waterways. It was very competitive racing, especially for the twofooters, or Balmain Bugs as they were often called. They were the subject of a lot of betting. The bookmakers would be rowed along in pulling boats behind the models while they raced. The whole thing came to a grinding halt in about 1956 when two of the bookies took a distinct dislike to each other and one drew a pistol and took a shot at the other fellow. The police decided the whole thing was getting a bit too dangerous so the scene evaporated until about four or five years ago when we started restoring these models and putting them back in the water once more for their owners. https://maritimemodelmuseum.blogspot.com.au/p/balmain-bugs.

03.01.2022 Just Restored This experimental oscillating engine was designed and built in 1939 by A.E Thorneycroft The famous British marine engineer, designed this revolutionary unit for the R.A.N.It was designed to establish that a twin oscillator with a central venting block and compression locking bracket would be self starting and capable of reversing.... He was proved to be correct and two full sized engines were then ordered for the Navy for harbour ships and pinnaces. The model is fully functional. See more
