25.01.2022 This year Lindsay and Joy Ellis celebrate 50 yrs of involvement with swimming. DVE proudly celebrated this amazing couple with a 50yr plaque at our AGM. The following is from an email from the couple: "Swimming was always a big part of our life in Greensborough and earlier in Geelong and we made lasting friends through the years. It all started when our 9 year old son, David, showed promise with his backstroke. He continued with the club until his medical training was finishe...d. He then married and moved to Coffs Harbour where he found the sun and surf to his liking. At present at 62 years old he is in the process of retirement. So time continues to march on but Lindsay still likes to be involved with DVE swimmers" DVE still loves having Lindsay officiating at our club meets. Hopefully we will be able to congratulate them on pool deck, in person sometime soon..

18.01.2022 A little of over 12 months ago, Tara Draper (a former DVE swimmer) left our shores to study and swim at Oberlin College, USA. This year was certainly not the year she was expecting, with a global pandemic interrupting her time spent on campus and her plans to return to Australia over the summer break. But in true Aussie spirit, Tara embraced the opportunities and has proceeded in leaps and bounds.... Recently, Tara was offered a journalism internship with Swimming World Magazine and the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Swimming World Magazine recently published her first article and you can read it here! https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com//a-personal-look-a/ Well done Tara - we look forward to reading more from you!

17.01.2022 Hi DVE! Another great day today, travelling the most kms we have so far on our journey! Although the weather was not the best today we still managed to get in around 250km! Amazing effort to everyone.... After today’s effort that lands us in Yass: - The Yass area was first seen by Europeans in 1821, during an expedition led by Hamilton Hume - Yass has a population of 6,506 - Horse race trainer Lee Freedman grew up in Yass - Although there are endless jokes about the town being a variant of "Yes" it is more likely that it is a Ngunnawal word "Yhar" which reputedly meant "running water". - In 2018, the town was featured in Queer Eye, a Netflix original series. The town was chosen as its name matches one of the cast's favourite sayings: Yaass. Tonight’s overnight low will be 1 degrees! Big mention to the Lansbury who logged a total of 119km! Fantastic effort!! Also a big shout out to the Apps family for completing 62km as well! Look forward to seeing the kms completed tomorrow! Happy travelling!

17.01.2022 Today was the final day of DVE’s Virtual Road Trip! Since our last update we have travelled 630km! This lands us at the sunny destination of Rockhampton, Queensland. Fun Facts:... - Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland and in Northern Australia - Rockhampton is the fourth largest regional city in the state - Rockhampton experiences over 300 days of sunshine each year - Rockhampton lies just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Central Queensland - In February 2015 Rockhampton was severely damaged by Cyclone Marcia, which was classed as a Stage 3 Cyclone - Duncan Armstrong and Glen Housman (former Australian swimmers) are from Rockhampton. Duncan competed in the 1988 summer Olympics and won gold in the 200m freestyle and silver in the 400m freestyle. Glen was a silver medallist in the 1500m freestyle at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Thank you to the following families who joined and took part in this virtual road trip. Your efforts were absolutely amazing! As a club we collectively travelled a total of 2,588km over 12 days! Thank you for logging km’s: Apps, Basile, Campbell, Chorida, Ilioski , Lansbury, Lawrence, Mahar, Morgan, Oldfield, Piaia, Southwell, Staggard, Thwaites, Wheen, Yong & Zipsin During this challenging time where we are restricted in our movements (socially and physically), I wanted to encourage participation at a club level to increase our physical activity. I hope you enjoyed being active and the virtual road trip challenge. Chantelle - Swimming Club Captain

17.01.2022 ROAD TRIP DAY 7 Today was a great day for traveling! There was close to 400km logged which is an awesome effort! This huge day lands us in a small town between Coffs Harbour and Bryon Bay a town that many might not know, New Italy. Some facts about New Italy:... - In 1882 Italian immigrants from the region of Veneto in northern Italy, took up a conditional purchase farm of 40 acres near Woodburn at what was initially called Cèa Venessia (Little Venice) and later renamed New Italy. - The New Italy settlers built mud brick houses, a church, school and community hall in traditional style of northern Italy - A museum was opened in 1989, were it presents the history of Italian migration to Australia and the memorabilia from the New Italy settlement. - The pavilion celebrates all Italian migrants and their contribution to the culture of Australia Tonight’s low will be 11 degrees. Big shout out to the Apps family once again who travelled a total of 61km and as well to Aryan who rode a massive 52km! Brilliant effort to you and everyone else completing kms too! 16.01.2022 Congratulations we have reached our first destination - the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre! Home of the 2021 Australian & Australian Age Swimming Championships! Some fun facts: - The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre opened in the 1960s as the Southport Pool.... - The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre was also known as the Optus Aquatic Centre for the 2018 Commonwealth Games - Approximately $40 million was spent on redeveloping the complex for the Commonwealth Games - Although the expansion was expected to be completed by 2017, the construction was brought forward to allow the venue to host the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2014 - The Pan Pacific Swimming Championships were headlined by all-time record holder for Olympic gold medals Michael Phelps who won three gold medals - The 2018 Commonwealth Games motto was Share the Dream - Australia topped the medal table for the fourth time in the past five Commonwealth Games, winning the most golds (80) and most medals overall (198). - The Commonwealth Games hold many memories but one that comes to mind is Australia breaking its own world record in winning the women's 4x100m freestyle relay. - The Australian quartet was never in doubt for the gold medal, with lead-off swimmer Shayna Jack and Bronte Campbell, swimming the second leg, establishing a one body-length lead over the rest of the field. Emma McKeon managed to extend that lead to two body-lengths before handing over to former 100m freestyle world record holder Cate Campbell Tonight’s low in Southport will be 14 degrees. Big mention to the Lansbury family who completed a total of 50km and to the Apps family for traveling 58km! Fantastic effort! Our next stop is Brisbane Aquatic Centre, (home to 2021 Nationals for Water Polo and Diving) followed by a surprise destination before completing our journey on Sunday evening. We don’t have long left now so don’t forget to log your kms!

Some facts about Longwood:... - Longwood has a small population of 240 people - It is the birthplace of the Victoria Cross recipient Frederick Tubb - The local pub oozes with historic charm and has served locals and visitors alike since the mid 1880s. - You will also find an amazing display of gemstones and minerals on offer just up the road at the local museum.
