25.01.2022 Introducing - Val Strantzen 1. How long have you been playing Table Tennis with DVTTA? I started playing tennis aged eight and started table tennis when I joined Melbourne Uni Table Tennis Club in 1967. When we built our house in Bundoora in 1974, we included a purpose-built TT room and played competition matches there, firstly continuing with teams from Albert Park, and then we switched to DVTTA in mid 70s. Some of the more senior current players may remember finishing the...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Introducing long term Committee member Graham Constantine 1. How long have you been playing Table Tennis with DVTTA? It was almost by accident I began with DVTTA. I had played for a number of years at basketball, walked past the T/T players without knowing they were there. One day I noticed the glass windows and thought I might be able to watch some basketball play, pleasantly surprised to find table tennis instead. I started with DVTTA mid to late 80’s, unsure exact date...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Introducing - Roma Chambers (Ern: Roma Chambers really does not have to be introduced to many DVTTA members. References have been made about her in several previously published player profiles. Roma is incredibly well respected, and was inducted as a Life Member in 2019 for her service and contributions within our Association. Roma is a humble and unassuming person, who despite twice winning the Australian Open Doubles title, numerous Veteran’s titles and holding number 1 ...Continue reading

15.01.2022 DVTTA BACK TO PLAY UPDATE As many will be aware, our Diamond Valley Sports & Fitness Centre is currently undergoing major renovations and reconstruction works. Unfortunately but not surprisingly, they discovered asbestos on the site, so we've now been advised that DVSFC is completely closed for all sports until April 2021. Centre management, Aligned Leisure, have offered the use of nearby Diamond Creek Community Centre (pictured) until DVSFC reopens. Just 10 mins away from DV...SFC, this is much larger than our current space, with the capacity for up to 10 tables. Depending on the expected easing of restrictions to be announced 23 Nov, we are looking at first starting a Sunday session 10 am to 12 from Sun 29 onwards (group coaching will also be available) and perhaps activities on Mon, Wed or Thu night to follow. An email has been sent out to all members about this. Looking forward to finally getting back to playing our great sport and hopefully losing some weight! Martin President

03.01.2022 Introducing - Mary Le Gassick (Editor: DVTTA Secretary 1980-1985. The DVTTA Closed Tournament Singles trophy is named in her honour. Commonwealth Championships 1973 Australian Open 1969, 1972 ... Victorian Open 1969, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1980 Inducted into Hall of Fame 2002) 1. How long have you been playing Table Tennis with DVTTA? I am long retired but I played in the late 60’S and 70’S. I first commenced playing with Watsonia Methodists and I think that was with DVTTA. Later on, I have fond memories of our team Horizontal Green at the home of one your current members Val Strantzen. 2. How do you rate your own standard of play? I was happy to reach the standard I did. (Editor: So humble) 3. What's your best, most proud table tennis moment/memory? Representing Australia was certainly a proud moment, especially my first time in 1968, here in Melbourne. 4. Who was the best opponent you have beaten? I beat a Chinese girl at Dallas Brookes Hall, with Bob Hawke in the audience, during a test match, that was pretty exciting. I was lucky enough to have a few good wins, but I had just as many bad losses. (Editor: Wow ) 5. Do you have a nemesis on court? If so, who? I had many!!! When I got towards the top it was hard going as everybody was trying to beat you. There is a saying that it is easier to get to the top than stay there, and yes it was always hard, when I did get to the top. 6. What is your funniest table tennis moment/memory? One night at the old Coburg Harriers clubrooms ( and they were OLD) I went to the Ladies and could not get back out. I think it is funnier now than when it happened. 7. Describe your killer shot. I think my determination, if you call that a shot, but maybe backhand chop. 8. Which player have you enjoyed most playing with? And why? I loved playing with all my teammates, so cannot single anyone out. I have so many friends to this day who I met and played against. Friendships are the best thing to come out of Table Tennis. 9. If you can have any coach in the world to help with your table tennis skills, who will that be? And Why? I would still choose my coach, Karol Javor (dec’d). he was my coach for a long time and knew and understood me. 10. If you are 4:10 down, what would you do? Definitely try and get a few more points so that you are in a better frame of mind to start the next game. 11. What pisses you off on the table tennis court? Arrogance, not trying, or a player trying to make fun of an opponent. 12. Which player in DVTTA that you would like to ask these questions to? I will leave that to you.

02.01.2022 First hit at Diamond Creek Community Centre! Plenty of space, lighting is pretty good, staff very friendly and accommodating.
