23.01.2022 Miss Leonidas finished a stellar racing career with her gutsy 2nd in The Galaxy Gr2 at Rosehill last Saturday. The lucky lessees that were taken on the ride of a lifetime cheered her on from home as they were unable to attend her swan song at Rosehill due to the Covid19 virus. Jockey, Billy Egan, said she should have won but didn’t hear the inside horse coming. He felt sure that had she heard it she would have kicked up a gear. She will go to Exceed & Excel this year and we are all looking forward to seeing her first foal.

20.01.2022 UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE In the light of the recent publicity regarding retired racehorses I feel compelled to assure you all that all our horses, even the slow ones in our stables, are loved for the animals they are. My family and staff, over the years, have always loved and put the health and welfare of out team of Thoroughbred Racehorses first. We (as do the great majority of stables) do our utmost to find all of our retired racehorses a home for life. W...ith many professional Off the Track trainers now retraining and re-homing the horses to move on to new careers, they have every opportunity for their welfare (post racing) to be catered for. The exposing of the tragedy that happens to some retired thoroughbreds has left us all embarrassed and sad, I believe that all racing administrations around Australia will quickly move to ensure that appropriate procedures regarding the ‘total welfare‘of our beloved horses after their racing careers have ended is urgently addressed. 18.01.2022 Nice article on the Bendigo Bullet.

17.01.2022 FOR LEASE (along with an Awesome Rock filly) NO UPFRONT COSTS Wow!! There is plenty to like about this Bull Point filly. She looks a ready made 2-3YO racehorse and has great conformation. She has a purposeful walk and all reports on the Bull Points suggest that they have a good racing temperament. She is no exception with Yarran Park manager John stating she is quick to learn and very co-operative. Ring Shaun on 0438-880-866.

11.01.2022 For sale - $2,500.00 for 5% Nothing not to like about this Bull Point Colt. Very much like his grand sire (Fastnet Rock) in both type and temperament he has a great alertness but a very peaceful attitude. He has great confirmation of both body and legs and looks to be a 1,200m to 2,000m horse.... Ring Shaun on 0438 880-866 for further details.

09.01.2022 Report on the Slaughter of Racehorses. By a deeply concerned journalist I’ve tried to stay out of this debate but can remain silent no longer. This entire situa...tion is wrong on so many levels. As a Journalist, Chief of Staff, News Editor and Producer in both radio and television for 28 years, a horse owner / lover all my life and a racehorse breeder and owner for 20 years I can speak to this matter from ALL aspects. Firstly, the vision is sickening and appalling, and NO animal should ever be treated like that. Make no mistake, I condemn the actions vehemently and whole-heartedly, but this is where the waters become muddy as a result of irresponsible and sensational journalism. The way horses (or any animal) are treated at an abattoir are not the fault of the racehorse industry. If you sold your dog or cat to someone who tortured it and killed it, does that make you responsible? Should you be charged for that animal’s death? Of course not. Once an animal is sold there is no control over what happens to it, nor is the former owner responsible for the actions of the new owner. Unfortunately, when you sell a horse (whether at auction or privately) you can’t control who buys it, you can only hope it goes to a good home. The journalist responsible for this story has completely played into the hands of the National Coalition for the Rehoming of Racehorses and simply reported their agenda rather than looking at the big picture and reporting the facts. It is not just racehorses that are slaughtered for pet meat, it’s horses from ALL equine industries including brumbies and everyone knows this has been practise for years but the sensationalised words that the journalist has used, targeting racehorses, and her lack or balanced reporting has created mass (ignorant) hysteria. How many dog and cat owners out there are prepared to pay the huge increases to pet food that will possibly result in 12-18 months as a result of this story? They’ll all be whinging about the cost of pet food then! Yes, it’s terrible that 100% of ex-racehorses can’t be re-homed but that is an unrealistic expectation. We currently have a beautiful 4yo gelding who we retired due to a tendon injury that we can’t GIVE AWAY! He would be perfect for hack or dressage, but no one wants him. Unfortunately, due to the drought and the exorbitant cost of stock food not many people are even taking on free horses, let alone buying them. Axl will stay here with us, but not everyone has the property or the financial ability to be able to provide a home for their ex-racehorses. I hate to see any horse killed for pet meat or sent overseas for human consumption, but it’s a better and more humane option (when done properly) than the poor horse being left in a paddock to slowly starve to death, which is probably what would occur otherwise. The report couldn’t accurately estimate how many of these racehorses are ‘being sent to the knackery to fuel greyhounds’ (because other pet owners don’t buy pet food that contains racehorse meat, clearly only ‘irresponsible’ greyhound owners buy the racehorse mince. Other pet owners must buy the pet food made from non-racehorses??) Anyway, the report couldn’t supply an accurate figure, they’ve guessed around 3%. I’d just like to point out that these figures may be inflated at the moment due to the drought and the cost of livestock feed and the lack of people interested (or able) to take a horse. It would be nice to be able to compare the statistics in a period of non-drought. Yes, 3% is not good, but let’s flip that statistic for one moment. If 3% of racehorses are going to the knackery, that means that an incredible 97% of ex-racehorses are actually finding a home! That is a fantastic result!! Yay racehorse owners! Even if it’s 92% being rehomed, that’s terrific. I can tell you now, any politician would be happy with a stat like that going to an election, or if that was your percentage on a Uni/School assignment, you’d be pretty happy. Of course, 100% would be better, but we don’t live in la-la-land do we But here is my biggest concern with this story, and the one aspect that makes me absolutely furious I want to know, how long did the ABC and the Coalition for Rehoming Racehorses have the vision of those horses being tortured like that before it was publicly released? They’ve patted themselves on the back for producing this important ’18-month investigation’, but when exactly did they get a hold of that vision? The reporter stated that 38 horses / day were being slaughtered in that manner, well how many horses could have been saved from that torturous, distressing slaughter if those two organisations released the vision immediately and targeted the correct offenders, the abattoirs, instead of taking months to feebly try to stitch up the racing industry for the sake of a pathetic ratings grab. The story was aired two days before The Caulfield Cup/The Everest and two weeks out from The Melbourne Cup coincidence? I think not, timing is everything. It’s all part of the ploy of the Coalition for Rehoming Racehorses. That ‘compassionate’ organisation, along with the ABC, should be hauled over the coals for sitting on such appalling vision for god knows how long. Where is their duty of care, compassion and responsibility and why isn’t an inquiry being held into that? Solutions: Here’s some possibilities: 1. Regulate the abattoir industry so that this type of torture and inhumane action cannot occur and dismiss any sick employees who treat the animals in that manner. 2. Set up a lovely property somewhere so that all the ex-racehorses can have a home. This can be funded by these thousands of people who want to condemn the racehorse industry. They can each contribute $50/week to feed and save a horse. Because $50/week is the bare minimum that it costs to feed and care for just one horse in these current conditions. I wonder just how many of them would donate? 3. Journalists do you’re friggin job!
