18.01.2022 Project Seaweed is well and truly under way. These 4-5 types seem to be the main ones occurring in Avalon. The first lot I rinsed and dried and is in the buckets. The next, fresh harvest I leave the salt on. As I will use seawater in tbe extraction process it doesn’t make sense to rinse it off. Apart from the smell ! I just love the bright colours. It is such an added joy to go to the beach in the morning for a swim and forage for what the sea has washed up. In addition I am intriguing the locals. It is a lot of fun to explain why I am walking off with bags of seeweed and talk about my project. #seaweed #seaweeddyeing #seaweedpigment #projectseaweed #avalon #northernbeaches

11.01.2022 A new line of enquiry of recording our environment in colour. I will share results but we have to be patient as this is not an easy task requiring patience, seawater and ammonia . I will aim fir making inks as you only need little. I am becoming very fond of this cousin of the dye as the process is the same but requiring far less material. 02.01.2022 Bloodroot - not a common dye source. These plants were taken from a healthy crop and the roots left intact. But this is where the dye is most concentrated, but we have to act responsibly as dyers. I will let you know how much colour is in the stems. It is bubbling as we speak. I understand bloodroot is used by Aborigines to stain/dye basketry.
