25.01.2022 This is my go-to recommendation this year. For anyone. Of course it's the perfect gift for someone who loves the TV show, but it's also a great gift for: - The person who has everything.... - The person who (very unhelpfully) says "Oh, just get me whatever." - Anyone who's always wanted to take a trip around Australia, and just never got around to it. - People who aren't readers. It's full of amazing photos and entertaining stories you can read in just a couple of minutes. ... "During the five years it has been appearing on our screens, ABC TV's Back Roads has taken us across Australia, through scorched deserts, along sapphire coasts, up breathtaking mountains and over gentle, rolling plains. It has shown us the rugged landscapes, the resilient communities and the extraordinary individuals who make a life in those areas outside the big cities. In this book, we capture in vivid colour some of our favourite people and places. Full of glorious photos that show us the spirit, purpose, difficulties and humour of outback life, this book is a tribute to the surprising characters, the rarely told stories and the sometimes beautiful, sometimes strange places that exist along the back roads of our extraordinary country."

23.01.2022 Signed copies available! ... "The epic story of the Boer War and Harry 'Breaker' Morant: drover, horseman, bush poet - murderer or hero?... Most Australians have heard of the Boer War and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. But Morant was a complicated man. Born in England and immigrating to Queensland in 1883, he established a reputation as a rider, polo player and poet who submitted ballads to The Bulletin and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend. Travelling on his wits and the goodwill of others, Morant was quick to act when appeals were made for horsemen to serve in the war in South Africa. He joined up, first with the South Australian Mounted Rifles and then with a South African irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers. The adventure would not go as Breaker planned. In October 1901 Lieutenant Harry Morant and two other Australians, Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George Witton, were arrested for the murder of Boer prisoners. Morant and Handcock were court-martialled and executed in February 1902 as the Boer War was in its closing stages, but the debate over their convictions continues to this day. With his masterful command of story, Peter FitzSimons takes us to the harsh landscape of southern Africa and into the bloody action of war against an unpredictable force using modern commando tactics. The truths FitzSimons uncovers about 'the Breaker' and the part he played in the Boer War are astonishing - and finally we will know if the Breaker was a hero, a cad, a scapegoat or a criminal." https://www.hachette.com.au/peter-fitzsimons/breaker-morant

22.01.2022 Another absolutely stunning book from Paul Bangay. Makes me sigh with envy and longing. ... "Paul Bangay’s celebrated Victorian property, Stonefields, has now been under his expert care for 15 years. ... Today, the garden is mature and more beautiful than ever from the vibrant autumn colours in the woodland and evocative dormancy of winter to the jubilant flowering of the crab apple in springtime and perpetual rich harvest of produce. In Stonefields by the Seasons, Paul takes the reader through the garden at different times of year to highlight the design principles he has applied to various parts of it, and the wide-ranging inspirations for his choices. Along the way, he gives practical advice on seasonal planting and outlines essential quarterly tasks. Reflecting on his time in this treasured space, Paul muses on creativity, experimentation, achievements and disappointments, his shifting attitude to landscaping, the universal cycle of life and the impact of climate change on his surroundings. More than just an intimate tour around Stonefields today, this book is an invitation to contemplate the essence of gardening and the intense rewards we can all gain from it." https://www.penguin.com.au//stonefields-by-the-seasons-978

16.01.2022 "In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency - a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil. Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to... the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office. Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune's Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden. A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective-the story of one man's bet with history, This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day." https://www.penguin.com.au/bo/a-promised-land-9780241491515

12.01.2022 Signed Copies! Kathy Mexted dropped in this morning and signed copies of her new book ‘Australian Women Pilots’. "Women have been flying since the early days of aviation but, with a few notable exceptions, they have rarely been visible or well known. Kathy Mexted shares the feats of trailblazers like Nancy Bird Walton, Deborah Wardley, who was told by Ansett that women couldn't be pilots, and Gaby Kennard, the first Australian woman to fly solo around the world. Others are pe...rhaps less known, but as pilots involved with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Britain's Air Transport Auxiliary, the RAAF, aerial agriculture or long-range ferrying, their stories are just as extraordinary. Packed with drama, adventure and sometimes heartbreak, this riveting book is a salute to those women who refused to keep their feet on the ground".

11.01.2022 'Honeybee' has been voted Dymocks' Book of the Year! It was up against some pretty stiff competition, so congratulations to Craig Silvey for writing something so moving and so timely. ...... 'Find out who you are, and live that life.' Late in the night, fourteen-year-old Sam Watson steps onto a quiet overpass, climbs over the rail and looks down at the road far below. At the other end of the same bridge, an old man, Vic, smokes his last cigarette. The two see each other across the void. A fateful connection is made, and an unlikely friendship blooms. Slowly, we learn what led Sam and Vic to the bridge that night. Bonded by their suffering, each privately commits to the impossible task of saving the other. Honeybee is a heartbreaking, life-affirming novel that throws us headlong into a world of petty thefts, extortion plots, botched bank robberies, daring dog rescues and one spectacular drag show. At the heart of Honeybee is Sam: a solitary, resilient young person battling to navigate the world as their true self; ensnared by loyalty to a troubled mother, scarred by the volatility of a domineering stepfather, and confounded by the kindness of new alliances. Honeybee is a tender, profoundly moving novel, brimming with vivid characters and luminous words. It's about two lives forever changed by a chance encounter -- one offering hope, the other redemption. It's about when to persevere, and when to be merciful, as Sam learns when to let go, and when to hold on.

07.01.2022 'Rhythm of War' is finally here! If you're looking for bang for your buck, I think this might be the best deal in the store. 1008 pages, my friends.... That's more than 50 hours of reading time (depending on how much of a freak you are, of course.) Given this is #4 in an already epic series, I have no idea how Mr Sanderson manages to keep everyone enthralled through so many pages, but he does, and he does it brilliantly. #rhythmofwar #brandonsanderson #epicfantasy

06.01.2022 Today only! Meet Kathy Maxted, author of Women Pilots, at Bendigo Flying Club today at 4pm!

05.01.2022 Only 6 weeks to go! Again, please remember to DO YOUR SHOPPING EARLY. Just think how awful and time consuming it will be if you have to queue outside a store for half an hour in 40 degree heat because we've reached the maximum number of people allowed in. ... How frustrated will you then be to find that the book you saw 3 weeks ago but didn't buy because you thought there would be heaps, has now run out and we can't get any more because the publisher has run out, and they can't get any more before Christmas because COVID IS A PAIN IN THE BACKSIDE and has slowed everything down? On the other hand, how relaxed and joyful and full of Christmas cheer will you be on the 1st December if everything is done, you got exactly the gifts you were after and you can now sit back and enjoy a glass of something cold while everyone else is stressing out? For those of you who need a bit more convincing, this is why everything is taking longer: - Fewer flights means most stock now has to come by shipping container. - Consequently, books from overseas, which used to take 4 weeks to arrive, are now taking 3-4 months. - This applies to older titles and new releases - e.g. new books released overseas in September are being released in Australia in December. Don't assume that because you saw it online you'll be able to get it in store here. - As so much more stock is coming via shipping container, the docks are becoming congested and it's taking longer to process shipments. - The printing process, much of which is done overseas, also takes longer. Companies have to take extra precautions because of covid, and lots of processes have been disrupted. - New releases can't be printed in as large quantities as normal, and reprints take longer as well. This of course applies to all sorts of products, not just books, so when you're Christmas shopping please be kind to the retail workers. Just like you, they're doing the best they can amidst all this pandemic madness. If we're all patient with each other, we could actually make this one of the least stressful and most organised Christmases ever. Love to you all. See more
