23.01.2022 The ankle joint! (Talocrural joint, made up of the tibia, fibula and the talus) It is the foundation of our body. We use our ankle everyday.... The foot creates a stable base of support, the ankle is a mobile joint to prevent us from shuffling our feet along the ground as we walk. The ankle is a hinge joint, it has 4 main movements: -Dorsiflexion, (pointing toes towards head) helps lift the foot, to avoid dragging it on the ground. -Plantarflexion, (pointing the toes away from you) helps push you off the ground as you walk. -Eversion, rotates the foot outwards. -Inversion, rotates the foot inwards. The main muscles around the ankle include: the calf muscles (Gastrocnemius and Soleus), Tibialis Anterior, Tibialis Posterior, Peroneal Longus and Brevis. The supporting ligaments help stabilise the ankle and prevent it from rolling inwards and outwards whenever we walk on an uneven surface. The plantarfascia is a thick piece of fascia (connective tissue) it connects the heel to the toes, it is often associated with plantarfascitis which is the inflammation of the plantarfascia. It supports the arch of the foot and is designed to absorb shock when you walk. . . . x Brooke x

17.01.2022 . Breaking down the squat If you have pain squatting read below.... The squat is a complex movement which requires lots of joints to be moving at the same time so it can go wrong for many reasons. Ankle mobility- when the ankles don’t have enough range of movement, in particular Dorsiflexion, compensation occurs and more range is made through the knee which causes pain. Working on ankle mobility and lifting heels up on a board or weight plates can help fix this. Knee stability- when the hip and ankle are restricted in range, the knee creates more movement which can then cause pain in and around the knee. Hip mobility- if the movement at the hip is restricted people compensate through knee and ankle, again causing issues. Low back stability- for the hip and upper back to be mobile they need a stable base to move on this is the lower back's job. Core engagement- the core is important during all exercises and everyday activities as it helps with fluid movement, Co-ordination and supports the low back in being a stable support. Upper back extension and shoulder flexion- upper back extension and shoulder flexion helps you remain upright during the squat. If you don’t remain upright your centre of gravity shifts which causes a change in biomechanics and can cause pain and damage. For an assessment of your squat or other exercises that cause you pain or discomfort book an appointment today to get a personalised stretching and exercise plan to correct movement dysfunction. . . . x Brooke x

01.01.2022 DROP PIECE ADJUSTMENTS When visiting Dynamic Health and Recovery for a Myo treatment while I have been working, chances are you have heard some loud sounds coming from my treatment room that sound like i'm dropping something heavy on the ground. This sound is actually coming from my Drop piece table!... . . So what is a drop piece table? It is a Chiropractic table with segments that can be lifted and dropped to assist in helping mobilise segments of the spine as well as extremities. Drop piece adjustments are a low force option for patients who: Prefer low force adjusting over manual alternatives. Drop piece treatments may also be best suited for Have contraindications to manual adjustments! The chiropractor feels drop piece adjustments will be best suited to them based on their assessment. How does a drop piece table work? Your Chiro will ask you to lay on the table. They will then prop up the drop piece they need to use under your body. They will then adjust the tension of the table to help the drop piece stay up with your body weight on it. The Chiro will then take a contact on your body They may then ask you to take a breath and they will push down which will release the drop piece and you will hear a loud sound. Drop piece adjustments should not hurt! What does it actually do to help my body? Drop piece tables on release drop down with the body. The drop piece comes to a halt when it returns to its normal position the body continues with a short moment of momentum allowing for potential movement of a restricted joint. This can promote mobility within restricted joints. Remember you don't need to hear a "cracking" sound for restricted joints to be mobilised. The noises are simply a release of fluid and air from a fast separation of the joint! If you have any questions regarding the drop piece table please let me know! . . . x Carla x See more
