23.01.2022 ***NEW POST***FREE POSTER Segmenting sounds in words is the ability to separate the smallest units of sound or it could be syllable. Children who learn to read ...without good segmenting skills are at a much greater risk of struggling to decode longer, more complex words later on. 22.01.2022 The link between DLD and dyslexia

21.01.2022 One in five children are dyslexic, and the signs can be hard to spot. #9ACA

20.01.2022 Do you know a very bright person with a high vocabulary and large fund of knowledge that seems to struggle in some areas despite many strengths? Have you heard ...of the term " stealth dyslexia" which refers to the people that fly under the radar? These are the students that look like they are reading well and may struggle with poor spelling, written expression and work completion. People may incorrectly label them as " not working to potential, smart but not motivated, should try harder, participates well in class but struggles to complete expected work, bright but lazy, we expect more, unmotivated, late bloomer, etc." These are the students that mysteriously " hit-the-wall" in grade 4, middle school, high school, college or in work life. It's really not a mystery. They were overlooked for a large range of reasons. The quiet, well-behaved, super-hard working student that spent hours upon hours doing work while missing out on real life. The outgoing, charming, full of class participation student with a smile at school and tears at home. The angry or sad student that became incorrectly labeled as " class-clown, potential juvi, mental health problem, stressed , in puberty, not academic or other unflattering terms." Quiet/Loud, Silly/Depressed, Shy/Outgoing, Perfectionist/Lazy. The behaviors are a signal of needs unmet. How do we miss so many students like this? We are not looking. The system does not care. The staff is not trained. The services don't exist until total failure occurs. We don't take a " prevention" approach. We are under-staffed. We say " other kids are worse." We assume that being able to read a book of high interest means the child can read across the curriculum. Wealthy kids get private tutoring to keep up. Poor kids are ignored. Many, many reasons exist depending on your age, culture and zip code. We totally ignore poor spelling and use the very outdated " inventive spelling " belief that misses all of these students. We think that if a child can talk well in school with a high vocabulary that they should be able to express those same skills with all written work. Verbal language skills do not always translate to the same level of written expression skills. Children with a very high fund of knowledge and large vocabulary can read books while totally skipping over words and they " fill in the gaps." No one is really testing their literacy skills if they carry around books and look happy while reading. Tell us other reasons that relate to your country or culture. So many adults do not discover their learning difficulties until they have graduated from high school. Can you relate ? See more

20.01.2022 The problem with predictive text in levelled books and the difficulty emerging readers face with accessing them. It is crucial in the early years to systematically teach the simple phonic code while giving kids many opportunities to read and spell at the level they are currently functioning at. Some kids will read no matter what, but for a large group (up to 40%) this style of teaching is crucial for their success.

20.01.2022 This kid!! How happy does he look? He is one of the smartest kids I’ve ever met. And that was before he could read. Now he can read, he’s unstoppable! Go Josh.

19.01.2022 The over reliance on predictable texts actively prevents our struggling readers from learning to decode. If you are unsure why please watch this great explanation from Alison at Spelfabet.

18.01.2022 We must catch the students. The more they fall, the wider the gap.

16.01.2022 FREE assessment materials for the Initial Code Are you using our Dandelion Readers and Dandelion Launchers reading series? After a long break in regular educat...ion, many kids will have gaps in their phonic knowledge and skills. If kids don't have solid foundations in the Initial Code they will find it difficult to retain the Extended Code. Teachers will need to assess their pupils to see where that gaps are, and at which point to resume teaching. We are delighted to announce you can now download our FREE assessment materials for our Dandelion Launchers and Dandelion Readers Units 1-20 - that will help you do just that. https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//dandelion-launchers-and-re/

15.01.2022 This is why we need to raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder. DLD is a problem with language, but it also has MASSIVE impacts on reading, spelling ...and maths. Many children and young people in our classrooms have difficulties learning because they have DLD and nobody knows about. The teacher thinks they are a low achiever, the families see they struggle and the student thinks they are 'stupid.' But they are not stupid, it's DLD. Share this post so that more children and young people can be identified and supported, and do not go through life thinking they are stupid, when in fact they have DLD. www.radld.org

15.01.2022 Punishing kids with ADHD for having ADHD makes less sense than giving kids coping strategies. We must first understand the behaviors.

15.01.2022 C kicking goals. What a legend.
