25.01.2022 When times are tough, it is so important to help our children feel good about themselves. Especially heading back to school and term 4. Praise them because they are brave, they are strong, they are unique!

25.01.2022 Great tips for students to help them with their writing.

24.01.2022 The Speld SA Spring Newsletter has an excellent article by Jacqui Edwards, Sandy Russo and Kerry Williams. Most schools only have levelled readers, or what many... reading experts call inconsiderate texts. They are called inconsiderate because they introduce new letters and letter groups (graphemes) and irregular spelling patterns (that are common to what many call sight words) in a random order that is inconsiderate to the fact that we are trying to teach readers to decode as their primary strategy to recognise words. What we end up with from these inconsiderate levelled readers and the disproven running records approach to assessing reading is what weve got in Australia right now. A huge cohort of struggling readers who have fallen well below international reading benchmarks. Why, because they were taught to guess at unfamiliar words by readers that didnt follow a sequence and randomly exposed them to letters that hadnt yet been taught! They were also encouraged to look at the pictures, predict what the new word might be from familiar words around it. They were in a non-phonics environment. Of course they guessed (bless their hearts). If phonic readers are popping up in your childs classroom, high 5 the teacher, and gather a group of parents to see how you can raise funds to buy more. 21.01.2022 Sophie Monk , well known Aussie with dyslexia, was a presenter at Wednesday night's ARIA awards. She made a hilarious speech and followed it up by saying that she is not good at reading, hence why she presents off the cuff. Thank you Sophie for helping to raise awareness for the 1 in 5.

20.01.2022 Lots of useful Information on this website too.

18.01.2022 It is interesting to see the number of students who aren't taught handwriting anymore.

17.01.2022 "Dyslexic children and adults struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly and learn a second language, among other challenges. But these difficulties have ...no connection to their overall intelligence. In fact, dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. While people with dyslexia are slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities. Dyslexia is also very common, affecting 20 percent of the population and representing 80 90 percent of all those with learning disabilities." (Yale Center for Dyslexia)

17.01.2022 Decodable readers! That would be great to see them been used more widely in schools.

15.01.2022 Very True! That's why it is so important for them to learn the sounds and sound out words.

15.01.2022 Great tips on encouraging teens to have manners and be polite, rather than a grunt or a one word answer.

11.01.2022 It is great to see support for those with learning difficulties in obtaining their learner's permit. It can be difficult for those with dyslexia to answer the questions on a test, when they struggle to read the words.

02.01.2022 Fantastic information and questions to ask when looking for a secondary school to support your child. Having 2 boys with dyslexia at secondary school myself, communicating with teachers is also very important. Especially when those first grades from assessment tasks come through at the beginning of the year. Talk to teachers about ways they can be supported to Improve their grade next time.
