25.01.2022 Today we received a generous donation of some old Hanush’s Softdrink labels, milk flavourings and juice flavour concentrates labels. They came all the way from Victoria, thanks to Leigh Hammerton for your contribution to our Softdrink display. The display can be seen at our Malanda centre and our museum at Millaa Millaa. The displays are in the windows so can be seen safely at any time.

25.01.2022 The Eacham Historical Society has a local Softdrink bottle display at their resources centre in Catherine St Malanda. This display will then move to the Millaa Millaa Museum. Some of the manufacturers are Channells, Hanush, Collins, Klarwein, Sandys and Maunds. It can be seen through the window on the CWA side. ... Your welcome to view this display at your Leisure. Social distancing rules apply. If you have any Softdrink memorabilia you would like to add to this display it would be most welcome.

24.01.2022 Eacham Historical Society Resource Centre - at Malanda is open on Thursdays or make contact via Email. All Covid19 rules and regulations are in place.

23.01.2022 Well researched history

21.01.2022 The Annual EHS Xmas Party was held at the Malanda RSL. It was an excellent night ... great venue, really great food and the programme for the night was interesting and fun. President Dan Donoghue kept the night in order ... his report of the years activities was a great reminder of the active history filled year we have had ... Guest speakers Darryl and Judy Cooper gave an interesting overview about the Herberton Historic Village - the early years and up to the present, inc...luding interesting early photographs. It is a great place to visit. A slide show displayed photographs of many field trip days from over the years. We had a a photo history quiz and the cherry ripes and mars bar prizes made for some quick answers. Our highlight was research member Rene proudly launching the first book of a series of 3 that follow the early writings of Coyyan. More about this and where and when they will be available in future posts. Draws for the lucky door were fun ... overall a great night and special thanks to everyone who attended and a big thankyou to the management and staff of the Malanda RSL - the venue was great, plent of Xmas welcome and the Christmas roast dinner and dessert was wonderful. Members look forward to another great year next year. If you would like information about being a member and part of this group please email [email protected] See more

21.01.2022 EHS Tolga Field Trip today - Lunch and a visit to the wonderful Tablelands Heritage Centre on Willows Road. Mario has a great collection which is well worth a visit.

20.01.2022 Members and friends of EHS had an enjoyable field trip in the Kairi, Tinaroo and Danbulla area today. Many comments .... 'gee have never been here before' , ' gee didn't know that', ' gee have not seen this before' and at then end of the day 'gee what a great day' Thanks to everyone who made it an interesting and successful day!!! Lunch and lots of discussion during the afternoon - maps and photographs at the lovely picnic area at 'The Chimneys'. These high double brick... chimneys are the remains of the Hanley and Clark home. It was built in 1924 and later owned by the Marshall and Swan families. Gordon Swan who joined us on the trip, lived in the house and could even point out the location of his bedroom. Nearby was the Hanley and Clark Sawmill which was later moved to Kairi. Lovely cool spot under the mango tree - bet it could tell some stories too ..... Afterwards some of the members visited the Cathedral Fig tree. See more

17.01.2022 Dear Eacham Historical Society Supporters, EHS would like to advise some changes for the next couple of months or for however long it takes. Last week the society decided to close the Museum at Millaa Millaa to visitors while these uncertain times are with us. We thank all our volunteers and wish them a safe time ahead. It was also decided at the last meeting that the Society would end our social activities. The event held last weekend being the last for the foreseeabl...e future. The management committee will continue to meet to maintain the Society's business requirements and are happy to correspond with any members or interested parties. Please E-mail or phone with any research requests, local history questions, book orders or business query the society is still operating. Email address is [email protected] - Phone : 40966239. .. 'Stay safe everyone' .. See more

14.01.2022 The EHS museum at Millaa Millaa is managed and run by wonderful local volunteers who also run the TRC Tourist Information Centre in the same building. It is a great way to meet people, connect with the local history and help visitors find all the interesting places in the Millaa Millaa area. If you can spare a few hours once a week it would help keep the Museum and Info Centre open so they can operate for more hours each week. Please contact Stacee at the museum or email : [email protected] or [email protected]

13.01.2022 Today is the culmination of nearly twelve months working on the aerated water and Softdrink display. The display has examples of bottles from Atherton, Herberton, Gordonvale, Cairns, Mareeba, Innisfail, Cooktown, and Millaa Millaa. The display is in the front window Millaa Millaa Museum and the side window of Eacham Historical Society Malanda. The displays will be on view till the end of April 2021. Please maintain COVID 19 social distancing while viewing the display. Thanks... to Stacy the Museum manager and the committee in Malanda. Thanks to Tex Costa for the cabinet work. Also thanks to all who have contributed to the project. The Eacham Historical Society is looking for any Atherton tablelands Softdrink memorabilia for their display. 12.01.2022 EHS president Dan Donoghue and committee member Rene Van Raders were busy last Thursday setting up programs and files on the NEW LAPTOP the society has arranged for the MUSEUM AT MILLAA MILLAA. The laptop was supported by the Tablelands Regional Council Community Grant program. Volunteers at the museum will now be able to catalogue the museum collection onto a database as well as showcase local photographs to visitors who visit the MILLAA MILLAA INFORMATION CENTRE and MUSEUM Tablelands Regional Council. The society thanks all volunteers, including Jean Reynolds who is busy in this photograph doing bookwork for the photo section.

11.01.2022 Members of the society have been busy researching the early Softdrink companies (Aerated Water & Cordial Manufacturers) on the Tablelands. The window display at the Malanda Resource Centre has some of the exhibition but due to the limited space a much large display will soon be at the Millaa Millaa Museum where we have a whole shop window. Larger signs, more bottles and softdrink crates etc etc will be part of this larger exhibition. We will also be displaying the exhibition at other tableland events once things start rolling forward from the restrictions of Covid19 Tablelands Regional Council The society thanks Tablelands Regional Council for their support

04.01.2022 RIP Anton. For many years Anton was a valued member of the society, especially taking on the role of visiting the information centres and shops to stock them with our books. His local knowledge of the area mainly Tinaroo and Millaa was very helpful and he supplied the society with a number of photographs of earlier days on the Tablelands. In 2017 he was made a life member. Anton moved south to be closer to family a couple of years ago.

03.01.2022 Members and friends of the Eacham Historical Society enjoyed their first field trip for the year today. A discovery of interesting areas and historic features around the Yungaburra district. 5th and 6th stops : At Allumbah we visited the Yungaburra Cemetery, in particular the headstone of Sarah McCrohan who was burried (with her infant son) in 1889. The grave was at Boar Pocket beside their shanty but the waters of the dam submerged it. When the waters were low the society with the permission of family moved it to be with other Pioneers under the gumtrees before further damage was done to it on the shore line. Lunch was enjoyed under to old old mango trees looking towards where the town of Kulara once was.

03.01.2022 Eacham Historical Society members and the volunteers at the Museum at Millaa Millaa are saddened to learn of the passing of long time member Lindsay McClelland. Lindsay has been part of the volunteer team at the Museum for many many years and will be missed. Lindsay reached the knowledgeable age of 96 years and it is only a few months ago that he was unable to continue his weekly role at the museum. RIP

03.01.2022 EHS Field Trip today included a visit to the Tolga Historical Society and their new museum area. Congratulations to all their members and helpers. It is a great achievement and well worth a visit. Interested in coming on our field trips ... easy join and become a member of Eacham Historical Socieyt and you will be on our mailing list. For various reasons some of our members had to cancel their plans for joining us today, but we had a great day and hope to do it again another time.

03.01.2022 A great History Field Trip for members and friends today. First was - Bones Knob and then Rocky Creek area. Weather was a concern but luck was on our side as not a drop of rain fell on us. We practiced (at least tried real hard) to keep the social distance apart rule, especially indoors ... over all a great trip around the Tolga area.

01.01.2022 RELOCATION OF MULGRAVE SETTLERS MUSEUM On 17 November 1977, Councillor Shirley Harwood of the Mulgrave Shire, chaired a public meeting which lead to the formati...on of the Mulgrave Shire Historical Society. The aim of the Society was to record and preserve the history of the then Mulgrave Shire which stretched from Palm Cove to the Mirriwinni area. In 1992, with the help of the Mulgrave Shire Council and the then owners of the Mulgrave Central Mill, the Mulgrave Settlers Museum was opened. The museum houses a collection of objects, documents, photographs etc from the residents of that Shire. The museum building reflected the Rambler Station adjacent as at that time the Rambler was a tourist venture instigated by the Mill. The museum building (erected by the Mulgrave Shire Council) sits on Mill land and was first leased to the Mulgrave Shire Council for 10 years. A second lease with the Cairns City Council extended the lease for another 10 years. That lease has now expired and the current Mill owners require the land. The Mulgrave Shire Historical Society held its monthly meeting recently at the Anglican Church hall. Curtis Pitt, (Member for Mulgrave) Brett Moller, (Division 1 Councillor for Cairns Regional Council) Jo Wills, (Development Officer with Museums and Galleries Qld) along with Society members discussed the future of the Mulgrave Settlers Museum’s location. The museum’s lease will end in June 2021. Looking for a new home for the museum is not going to be an easy task. We hope the people of the Gordonvale district will support the retention of a museum in Gordonvale by becoming members of the Mulgrave Shire Historical Society. Our membership form can be found on our website at www.mulgravesettlersmuseum.weebly.com Words and photo provided by Mulgrave Shire Historical Society
