24.01.2022 So lovely to receive this message from one of my Support Coordinators
23.01.2022 Renee, Stacey, Monique and myself went to Sydney Zoo the other day and boy what a fantastic place! Plus it’s just down the road from us. The place is really well laid out. Renee took some amazing photos and her favourite was the elephant Saigon. She is 65 years old and in retirement from a circus. We also saw two new young elephants imported from overseas and just out of quarantine. This fascinated Renee and us all. Stacey loved the whole place but especially the Lions
21.01.2022 Some more breaking supermarket news this morning ... The Minister for the NDIS has announced that NDIS participants will now be given priority for home delivery... from supermarkets. From tomorrow NDIS participants will be able to order on line and have their shopping delivered to their door. All participants will be sent a code by text or email tomorrow. You can then order your shopping on line and enter the code when prompted. This is available for all Woolworths, Coles, IGA, Foodworks and Harris Farm supermarkets. This is available to ALL NDIS participants. If your child is an NDIS participant you may also use the service. There is more information here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//4703-priority-home-delivery-servi There are questions and answers here - https://www.ndis.gov.au/cor/priority-home-delivery-services Media coverage here - https://www.smh.com.au//supermarkets-set-to-prioritise-foo This is fantastic news for NDIS participants and their families. We have heard lots of stories about people having trouble with their shopping and this will really help. We hope this kind of assistance will be extended very soon to all people with disability, regardless of whether they are an NDIS participant or not. Please share so we can get the word out. Because everyone knows Tim Tams are essential in a crisis)

15.01.2022 Happy Down syndrome Day Each year, the 21st of March marks the celebrations of World Down syndrome Day, a date specifically chosen to recognise the third copy of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome are born with. According to the United Nations, approximately one in every 1000 babies born alive have Down syndrome, or 5.8 million people worldwide. This year, 21 is also a significant number for another reason- my gorgeous niece Stacey is turning the big 2 1. S...tacey has been a huge blessing in my life- she has the biggest smile, gives the best hugs and always has a story to share. Here are three things that Stacey has taught me over her 21 years of life about (dis)ability: 1.Disability does not mean lack-of-ability Persons with disabilities cover a wide spectrum of abilities, talents, and passions, just as people without disabilities do. Persons with disabilities have gone on to have meaningful employment, be Paralympians, open their own businesses. People with disabilities are also often very creative when they struggle to communicate or complete a task in the ‘normal’ way, they find alternatives the use of sign language, for example. Last year Stacey saw some of her dreams of becoming famous become a reality when she entertained hundreds of people on board a cruise ship with her singing and dancing. 2.My sister is a hero My sister Ali has done a phenomenal job of raising Stacey and her sisters. Ali has taken the girls to countless appointments, help them navigate school, find jobs and raise them into bright, thoughtful, empathetic young women. 3.Our strength lies in our diversity According to the United Nations, around 10% of the world’s population, or 650 million people, live with a disability, sometimes referred to as the world’s largest minority. Disability is socially constructed through the failure or unwillingness of society to create ability among people who do not fit the physical and mental profile of ‘paradigm’ citizens. We need to mainstream disability, to remove barriers to full participation in society and recognise that our strength lies in our diversity. In a time of unprecedented uncertainty with COVID-19 wreaking havoc on daily life of everyone around the world, we must focus on our shared humanity. We need to come together and celebrate our differences and in particular the achievements of people with Down Syndrome today. We are all human after all.
13.01.2022 Hello and welcome! My name is Fiona and I live in Western Sydney with my family. I have a husband and two girls aged in their early twenties. I’m an accountant with a love of numbers and a passion for helping people. 11.01.2022 This was a great week we had down the coast with my gorgeous twin nieces, Renee and Stacey, my gorgeous daughter Hayley, my wonderful Mum and me. The girls loved floating down the lake with their life jackets on and doing it over and over. We had plenty of walks along the beach. Relaxing in the hammocks. Plenty of swims and lots of board games. FYI Stacey has Down syndrome and Renee has cerebral Palsy ADHD moderate intellectual disability and anxiety ! (Shared with permission).
10.01.2022 A little bit about me. I’ve been married to Steve for 29 years and we have two gorgeous girls. I love Jesus and belong to a great church. I like to eat healthy and to exercise. As a family we enjoy water skiing and snow skiing and we love to travel. I also enjoy physical culture. I’d love to get more into hiking when I can. One thing I don’t really enjoy is cooking. I do it because I need to not because I want to. Working from home is great. A...t present both my girls are home because of Covid19 restrictions. It seems to be working well in these circumstances but we are all looking forward to venturing out like everyone else I’m sure. Steve has still been at work full-time. I’m also looking forward to catching up with extended family whom I miss. Can’t wait to go visit. We sure are living in times of fast change. We’ll look back on 2020 and remember it well. I’m sure the world as we know it will be different from now on. There has been many hardships all over the world but there has also been many blessings. I’m certainly more thankful for what I’ve got as it’s times like these make us take a deeper look and re-evaluate things that are important to us.
09.01.2022 What is Ableism? I was at an airport with my husband and I was in my wheelchair. The lady working at the counter only addressed my husband; she didn’t even look at me. Later, as we were waiting for our flight, I was sitting in a normal chair and my husband was sitting in my wheelchair and another flight attendant came up to us. This time the reverse happened: she addressed only me and my husband was completely ignored. To read more about ableism head to my webpage... to read Monique’s article https://eagleplanmanagement.com.au/what-is-ableism/ #ndisprovider #planmanager #ndis #eagleplanmanagement #ndisprovidersydney #choiceandcontrol #reasonableandnecessary #diversityandinclusion #abilitynotdisability #ndisplanmanager #ndisnsw #ableism
09.01.2022 This is my other daughter Monique with my gorgeous niece Stacey. We're very blessed in our family that all the cousins aren't too far apart in age and they all get along so well. This was taken at my Dad's place at Christmas in July last year just before Monique set off overseas to study. Monique chose Down Syndrome for her HSC major work and called it Looking up at Downs. She's going to write a few articles for me on this page, so keep an eye out. She also has an internship in Geneva and has been at the UN where the Human Rights Council is currently being held.
07.01.2022 What's in a name? I've personally always loved eagles. They are beautiful birds. They soar high and are fearless. They have excellent vision and nurture and protect their young. Eagles represent strength and reliability. This resonates with me as its something I've always strived for. My Mum gave me this gorgeous bronze statue for my 40th birthday which I treasure. "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
07.01.2022 My gorgeous nieces. Excellent read
06.01.2022 Beautiful story last night on Australian Story about a man with autism who is living his dreams and succeeding. His mum is amazing. How she has overcome and supported and encouraged him all his life is a true inspiration. Good on them both
06.01.2022 Happy 21st to my beautiful nieces who are the reason I do the job I do. They’ve had a tough road but are enjoying and getting the most out of life. Mostly thanks to their amazing Mum and wonderful love and support from their Dad, sister and extended family. We love you Renee and Stacey. May God bless you in your lives as you are a blessing in ours
05.01.2022 This is my gorgeous niece Renee. Her twin sister has Down syndrome. Renee’s disabilities aren’t so easy to spot. She has cerebral palsy, ADHD, moderate intellectual disability and anxiety. Some disabilities are more visible that others. Renee loves learning how to cook and making the best coffees. She also enjoys taekwondo
03.01.2022 This is my wonderfully supportive husband of nearly 29 years and father to our two beautiful girls. He is the only one missing in the big group family photo which was at my Mum's 80th birthday. He was in hospital with bad asthma at the time. Steve and I love spending time together at our cabin at Lake Conjola. He loves fishing and surfing and we also love our waterskiing. We also both love to snow ski, walking and bike riding together. This photo was taken in January 2020 at Murren near Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland when we were there visiting our daughter Monique who lives and studies in Switzerland. It was taken by our other daughter who is a talented photographer Hayley Rafton Photography.
