25.01.2022 A huge thank you to all of the wonderful businesses that have made the Are You Inclusive project such a success over the past few years. We couldn't tag all of ...you below, but we appreciate all of you in your effort to make our communities more inclusive for people with invisible disabilities. 24.01.2022 Today, Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) released new data revealing the shocking increase of homelessness and hunger amongst people seeking asylum in Austral...ia. With so many of our sector colleagues, we have warned of this since the start of the pandemic, we could see and could hear our community was suffering. The government has failed to take sufficient action and the situation is only getting worse. #NobodyLeftBehind BMRSG visitors are seeing the same hardships. In November we paid $10,080 in rent assistance. https://www.givenow.com.au/supporting-refugee-families

24.01.2022 There's a jungle of flowers for bees at Blackheath Community Farm at the moment and this abundance of colour added to the joy of last Sunday when we all met up ...again and got stuck into mowing, harvesting (garlic, peas, broad beans, lettuce, silverbeet, broccoli, garlic scapes and strawberries) tidying and weeding. We also welcomed the new bonsai group which will meet monthly on the second Sunday of the month. We'll be back at 10am today to enjoy each other's company, care for the bushland around the Farm with our Landcare Group, and plant lots and lots of seed. All welcome.

23.01.2022 Penrith celebrates IDPwD 2020 - participants wanted! Each year on 3 December, Penrith City Council celebrates International Day of People with Disability (IDPw...D). It's a day to talk about and celebrate the contributions and achievements of people of all abilities, break down barriers and see the ability in disability. While in previous years Council has worked with local disability services to host an event in the Mondo, our 2020 celebrations have taken a COVID-safe and rather crafty turn. Day programs, group homes, specialist schools and individuals across Penrith are invited to participate in this free project. Participants will receive an arty, crafty kit delivered to their door, and be inspired by creative tips from local art makers via Zoom workshops to be held in late November. The completed works will be displayed in the Penrith Central Library from 3 December until the end of the year and Councils project partner, Uniting, will capture the journey in a video to be shared on Council’s YouTube channel on December 3rd. Council’s IDPwD Art Project will help bring members of our community together to explore their creativity and learn something new while giving the broader community a chance to celebrate the talents of people with disability. To get involved or for further information, contact Council’s Disability Inclusion Officer ASAP. 23.01.2022 In September the Morrison Government blindsided NDIS participants when it announced Independent Assessments would be mandatory for new applications, and even fo...r people already on the scheme. This will force people with disability to audition for NDIS support before a panel of strangers hired by the Government. There are many concerns about this - that it’s a cost-cutting measure or will lead to some participants being excluded from the scheme. Will you sign the petition calling to stop Independent Assessments? You can read the media release here - https://disability.royalcommission.gov.au//royal-commissio You can read the interim report here (summaries, Easy read and an Auslan version are available too) -https://disability.royalcommission.gov.au/pu/interim-report Important word of warning - report is full of distressing stories about violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability. 14.01.2022 I've been able to land stable permanent accommodation keeping me from homelessness. I can afford food that actually has nutritional value, bills are addressed ...and ultimately the things that were preventing me being a contributing member of society are finally addressable. Zac shares his story on the impact of the higher income support rates during the COVID-19 crisis. We need to make sure that Zac and so many others can continue to cover the basics, with a permanent, adequate increase to JobSeeker and other income support. We cannot go back to old brutal rate of $40 a day at the end of the year. TAKE ACTION: **Join the campaign to Raise the Rate for Good at www.raisetherate.org.au **If you’ve already signed up, encourage others to do so too. 05.01.2022 TAKE ACTION now to Raise the Rate for Good with our holiday card campaign! The holiday season is fast approaching and right now our politicians are deciding on... the future of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments. Raise the Rate has launched a holiday card campaign to tell our politicians that we’ve had enough of the cuts and short-term measures. Can you write a card to our political leaders calling on them to deliver a permanent and adequate increase to income support right now, so people have certainty that will be able to cover the basics and be able to plan for the future? An announcement from the Government is likely in late November, which gives us less than three weeks to make our voices heard. TAKE ACTION Use our digital tool to have a physical card sent to key Government leaders with your personal messages: https://raisetherate.org.au/holiday-message-2020/ We’d also love for you to send your own card or print out the one on our website and post to other members of the Government: https://raisetherate.org.au/send-a-holiday-card-to-our.../ The card was designed by talented Raise the Rate grassroots campaigner Cassie Francisco!
