25.01.2022 Win-win! Youre looking at two gorgeous tassie wedge-tailed eagles perched safely on a poletop retrofitted with a perch. It seems simple enough, just two cheap... pieces of timber and hardware. But this photo is the outcome of years of negotiation and advocacy, resulting in a partnership between @tasnetworks and @raptorrefuge. And were just getting started! There is still much to do. Soon were hoping this will be a common sight as we aim to save countless bird lives. #tasmania #wildlife #animalrescue #eagles photo from Peter Thorp. See more

25.01.2022 If you've been missing seeing Sage our Tawny Owl in action, you'll be as delighted as us to hear that she's back! Following a good, long moult, she's looking pi...n sharp and is doing some beautiful flying in displays again. She's also a little superstar in our Owls by Moonlight events team. If you haven't been able to book tickets so far for our autumn dates, we have added an extra date on Saturday 7 November. Get your tickets now: https://www.hawk-conservancy.org/events/obm/ We also have two dates in December with a festive twist, and all of our spring dates are now on sale!

23.01.2022 While we were doing some work in the Visitor Centre this afternoon, a family called by to alert us to the fact they could see a large bird above the centre. We ...ran outside and overhead we saw not one, but five Ospreys! There was a lot of intruder chipping going on and it was brilliant to hear Ospreys calling for the first time this year. We believe it was Mrs G, an intruding Osprey, Aran with a fish and two of the chicks. Shortly after they headed back towards the nest, Aran delivered a Brown Trout to KC3. He delivered a Mullet to KC4 three hours later. The hungry chicks are certainly keeping him busy! ******************* Tra roeddem yn gwneud rhywfaint o waith yn y Ganolfan Ymwelwyr y prynhawn yma, galwodd teulu heibio in rhybuddio am y ffaith eu bod yn gallu gweld aderyn mawr uwchben y ganolfan. Fe wnaethon ni redeg y tu allan a gwelsom nid un, ond pum gwalch! Roedd yna lawer o weithgaredd yn yr awyr ac roedd yn wych clywed gweilch yn galw am y tro cyntaf eleni. Credwn mai Mrs G, gwalch yn ymyrryd, Aran oedd physgodyn a dau or cywion yr oeddem yn ei wylio. Yn fuan ar l iddynt fynd yn l tuag at y nyth, danfonodd Aran frithyll brown i KC3. Dychwelodd gyda hyrddyn i KC4 dair awr yn ddiweddarach. Maer cywion llwglyd yn sicr yn ei gadwn brysur!

23.01.2022 Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen the chicks regularly perched in a dead tree not far from the footbridge by the protection caravan. We have seen them... diving down from the perches on occasions, and we suspect they are practising diving into the water and possibly even entering the water. On one occasion KC3 arrived at the nest wet after we had witnessed this behaviour. On Saturday morning, we could see two of the chicks on the tree again, but this time they appeared to be divebombing something rather than making practice dives. It seems Ospreys develop a dislike for herons at an early age! *********************** Dros yr ychydig wythnosau diwethaf rydym wedi gweld y cywion yn clwydo mewn coeden farw heb fod ymhell or bont droed wrth y garafn gwarchod. Rydym wedi eu gweld yn plymio i lawr or glwyd ar brydiau, ac rydym yn amau eu bod yn ymarfer plymio ir dr ac o bosib yn mynd i mewn ir dr. Maen debyg bod gweilch y pysgod yn datblygu atgasedd tuag at y cryr glas pan yn ifanc!

22.01.2022 At this stage of the season many females have already left their nests and started their migration south and are probably feeding up at lakes and reservoirs alo...ng the route. Mrs G prefers to stay closer to home to fuel up for her journey. As far as she is concerned she has done her bit in aiding the chicks development and she is quite happy to challenge her offspring for any of the fish deliveries that Aran makes to the nest. Mrs G waited patiently for Aran to bring in a new fish this afternoon while the chicks bickered over possession of a mullet and she was quick to grab a flounder from Aran before KC3 got the chance to take it. Fortunately Aran is a good provider and he will make sure that all his family are well fed. ************************** Erbyn yr adeg hwn or tymor mae llawer o fenywod eisoes wedi gadael eu nythod ac wedi dechrau mudo ir de ac maen debyg eu bod yn bwydo mewn llynnoedd a chronfeydd dr ar hyd y daith. Maen well gan Mrs G aros yn agosach at adref i baratoi ar gyfer ei thaith. Cyn belled ag y mae hi yn y cwestiwn, mae hi wedi gwneud ei rhan wrth gynorthwyo datblygiad y cywion ac maen eithaf hapus i herio ei phlant am unrhyw un or danfoniadau pysgod y mae Aran yn eu gwneud ir nyth. Arhosodd Mrs G yn amyneddgar i Aran ddod physgodyn y prynhawn yma tra bod y cywion yn ffraeo dro hyrddyn, ac roedd hin gyflym i fachur lleden oddi wrth Aran cyn i KC3 gael cyfle iw gymryd. Yn ffodus mae Aran yn ddarparwr da a bydd yn sicrhau bod ei deulu i gyd yn cael eu bwydon dda.

22.01.2022 A comb comes in handy for a well-groomed Masked Owl The ‘Tytonid’ owls, of which we have Barn and Masked Owls in SW WA, have a nifty comb to help keep their fea...thers in top shape. When recently removing livers for analysis from some dead Masked Owls, we took the opportunity to closely examine the preening combs that are on the inner edge of a ‘pectinate claw’ on the front outer talon - the perfect place for a comb to provide a downward scratch preen’ of the head feathers. Note also that these, as with all owls, have what are termed zygodactyl feet, meaning that they have two rather than three toes facing forward. See more

21.01.2022 Tough love: extracting Masked Owl livers for testing This weekend Felicity Bradshaw, our dedicated Owl Friendly Veterinarian conducted external and internal ex...aminations of two Masked Owl corpses, extracted livers for rodenticide and muscle tissue for genetic analysis, and matched measurements to confirmed sex and age, prior to handing over the body for the WA Museum collection. One was a freshly dead early morning road kill collected by Wayne Webb at Quedjinup in May 2020. Sadly, a beautiful adult male with a stomach full of rat and an abdomen full of fat reserves, ready to breed. The heaviest male we have examined. The other found alive but terminally debilitated in Jalbarragup by Nancy Tang mid-winter 10 years ago. One of the lightest females we have encountered. See more

14.01.2022 Meet Ennis, one of our stunning Great Grey Owls! In the wild, this large owl can be found in higher latitudes across North America and Eurasia. They have an esp...ecially large facial disc, the largest of all owls, and this aids their hearing and hunting. Small mammals can be detected by sound under deep snow and the Great Grey Owl searches for them either by listening from a nearby perch or by hovering above. Once the location is pinpointed, the owl will plunge through the snow with its long legs to capture the prey, sometimes as deep as 45cm! See more

14.01.2022 How to safely dispose of unwanted rat poisons in my cupboard John McKinney, AMR Shire Environment Landcare Services Co-ordinator, advises that they are ‘househo...ld hazardous waste’ which is a no-no for our landfill rubbish bins. The Shire is organising a hazardous waste collection day where residents can bring things like gas bottles, flares, old petrol, chemicals etc to be disposed of correctly. This was planned for earlier in the year but got ‘covided’. We will advise you when and where this will be happening. Meanwhile, we should store all of these items safely until that opportunity. 11.01.2022 Yawny Tawny Frogmouths our pic of the week! Perth-based wildlife photographer Rebecca Harrison was out searching for an owl in her neighbourhood when she stum...bled across this roosting family of four Tawny Frogmouths. It was an overcast morning, she says, and the four of them were snuggled together, napping. I fired off some shots and was lucky to get an image just as one let out a sleepy yawn. Dont you just love this cosy capture! Tawny Frogmouths are often confused with owls, but they are actually more closely related to another group of nocturnal birds the nightjars! Have you visited our Birding at Home page yet? Weve gathered some resources to help you continue to enjoy the beauty of our feathered friends from home. Even in times as strange as these, there are so many ways to keep busy and having fun while #birdingathome ! 10.01.2022 Late last year the first ever nests of Masked Owls in SW WA were located in Margaret River. Found when chicks were old enough to beg on the rims of their nest h...ollows. Working back on timing for courtship, laying, incubation and caring for young chicks, we are currently keeping close watch for breeding to recommence. Last week, deep in karri forest along a stream not far from town, a male has been seen entering a hollow, interacting with a bird inside, then departing with a farewell screech. We are confident that he is feeding a mate sitting on eggs, which our sound recorder tells us he is achieving around four times a night. Especially exciting is that this is a new nest discovery; until now we knew the nest hole was one of many possibilities in two ancient karris. This non-intrusive red light footage shows the male leaving the nest hole. Listen for soft begging hisses of the female encouraging him to get more food. See more

09.01.2022 Back in June we shared the exciting news that Glaslyn born Blue KS1 (2018) had been resighted in north-west England. KS1 remained in that area for a while, but ...she has obviously moved on. Yesterday we received news from Rosie Shields of Borders Ospreys, that KS1 had intruded on their nest on 7th August. She stayed for several hours and even managed to steal a fish brought by the resident male "Samson", from right under the beak of the female that Samson has been bonding with this year, Rutland hatched 3AF (2017), who has been named "Astra". 3AF tried to steal the fish back, but in typical KS1 style she hung on to it and 3AF eventually gave up. Borders Ospreys are in Jedburgh, which is not far from Kielder Forest where there is a growing population of Ospreys, including two of KS1s half brothers. We wonder whether she may turn up there next? Thank you to Rosie and Borders Ospreys for allowing us to share the photos and news with you. ********************** Yn l ym mis Mehefin fe wnaethom rannur newyddion cyffrous bod cyw Glaslyn o 2018, Glas KS1 (2018) wedi cael ei gweld yng ngogledd-orllewin Lloegr. 07.01.2022 Bunnybait risk to wildlife We have received reports from the edges of town of wildlife including magpies and galahs sick and dying of an unknown cause. One pos...sibility is Bunnybait containing Pindone which is often used on small rural holdings to control rabbits. Pindone is a first generation anticoagulant with a short half life that has a relatively low risk of secondary toxicity (for example for Masked Owls pictured here with rabbit hindquarters) but a high risk when ingested directly by non-target species. Our friends at Landmark advise that rabbits dig for grain and therefore bunny bait should be buried in accordance with directions to both achieve rabbit control and to reduce chance of non-target poisoning. More information is provided in a review available in the Resources section of the Owl Friendly website (Lohr and Davis 2018, Section 4.5.1 Pindone). See more

Featuring in media coverage of the campaign is the sad case of the death of a Boobook outside Birdlifes Melbourne offices. As with the WA Boobooks in Mike Lohrs PhD study, liver testing showed cause of death to be Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides. Birdlife reports that over 3000 submissions calling for protection of wildlife were submitted to the current review of rodenticides by the APMVA, the authority responsible for scheduling such products. While waiting and hoping for a decision to appropriately restrict access, BirdLife Australia has written to major retailers of SGARs asking them to remove these products from their shelves.

02.01.2022 CRAWLEY FALCONS ARE BACK! A pair of rare peregrine falcons which have chosen a balcony in a Crawley highrise apartment block as their permanent nesting si...te are back for the sixth year in a row. Every year Brad Power and Clare Thompson lose the use of their balcony in late winter and spring as the peregrine falcons use it to nurture a new brood of chicks. Brad told the ABC in 2018 that they try to disturb the birds "as little as possible and encourage them to successfully breed". The encouragement has worked, with the pair back again in 2020, with two eggs laid so far in the brood. Brad said the birds are a significant attraction for the apartment complex and were "fascinating to watch", but there were some downsides. Peregrine falcons are highly protective of their young and menace residents on nearby balconies which means that for people like Brad and Clare, a cuppa on the balcony is entirely off limits until the chicks leave the nest later in the year. PHOTOS: A proud mother with the two new eggs and the clutch of three peregrine falcon chicks which were raised last year. Clare Thompson & Brad Power.
