09.01.2022 Today is Swallowing Awareness Day! Our Allied Health Assistants, Katherine and Helina not only enjoy grabbing a coffee or tea for the day, but they also enjoy incorporating tea sets and food into sessions. They shared the following thoughts about swallowing: Grabbing a cuppa means I can relax.... For me, I feel like it’s a great start to my day! Many others also enjoy this, but this can be something taken for granted. For people living with dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), this is very different. Some people find this as a difficult and even an uncomfortable experience. Did you know: - On average, people swallow 700 times a day. - But more than 1 million Australians have difficulty swallowing. - 1 in 17 people will develop some form of dysphagia in their lifetime. Sharing a drink and food with family and friends doesn’t have to stop if dysphagia occurs. Speech Pathologists have an important role in supporting people of all ages to eat and drink safely. @SpeechPathAus #SwallowAware2021 #dysphagia #speechpathology
