12.01.2022 When it comes to young children, engaging in unstructured #play with other kids is a more well-rounded reflection of a childs development than any academic tas...k. Play helps kids learn how to #regulate themselves, build resilience, and interact with others in pro-social, positive ways. A strong predictor of a childs academic success in the 8th grade is how well they socialise with their peers in the 3rd grade. Playtime isnt wasted time, if youre concerned with academics; in fact its just the opposite. Playtime is essential for young children. The experience of play changes the connections of the neurons at the front end of your #brain," says Sergio Pellis, a researcher at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. "And without play experience, those neurons aren't changed," he says. It is those changes in the prefrontal cortex during childhood that help wire up the brain's executive control centre, which has a critical role in #regulating emotions, making plans and solving problems, Pellis says. So play, he adds, is what prepares a young brain for #life, #love and even #schoolwork. But to produce this sort of brain development, children need to engage in plenty of so-called free play, Pellis says. No coaches, no umpires, no rule books. Whether it's rough-and-tumble play or two kids deciding to build a sand castle together, the kids themselves have to negotiate, well, what are we going to do in this game? What are the rules we are going to follow?" Pellis says. The brain builds new circuits in the prefrontal cortex to help it navigate these complex social interactions. It makes sense why, then, as Pellis states, "countries where they actually have more recess tend to have higher academic performance than countries where recess is less." Yet a quarter of kindergarten teachers in the US said they administer a practice standardised test once a month. This is despite the fact that children between the ages of 4 and 6 learn at different rates, so its impossible to standardise their academic performance. And its not the teachers faults. Despite the arguments of veteran teachers, the wayward direction of legislative change focuses on comparisons between the pace of American children compared to those in other countries, rather than solid research, social science, neuroscience or common sense. Many teachers are pressured to ensure children know how to read by the time they leave kindergarten. Between 1998 and 2006, instructional time spent on literacy rose 25 percent, at the expense of non-core subjects like art, science, social studies, as well as socialising and playtime. The time devoted to literacy learning came out to equal the amount of time spent on all other activities. With advances in neuroimaging, its important that educational reform for our young children develops in step with science and not against it. Bring back the kindergarten classroom that many of todays parents experienced growing up a place of playing, singing, stories, and naps. A magical time where letters and numbers were beginning to make sense, but not at the expense of good old fashioned fun. https://www.npr.org//scientists-say-childs-play-helps-buil https://www.babble.com//the-case-for-old-school-kindergar/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/11273389/ #neurochild #letthemplay #brainscience
