23.01.2022 We owe all veterans a debt that cannot be repaid. Our freedom, and the many benefits we enjoy were dearly paid for through the sacrifices and courage of these veterans and many of our own service men and women. Today, please take the time to remember our veterans and current serving members who take the ultimate sacrifice each day to protect us all. Here at Early Start Australia NT we have many families currently servicing our nation and would like to show our appreciation fo...r your dedication and honor. Take the time to hug your husband/wife, sister/brother, father/mother and say thank you for us all. For those who have passed, lay a flower or take the time for a minute silence to show our appreciation for their dedication to our country. They will never be forgotten. We will remember them. 22.01.2022 Have you ever heard your child use EWWW, YUCK, GROSS, I’M NOT EATING THAT, DISGUSTING? Or making a meal for a child who is struggling with eating and has a very small selection of foods, making mealtimes for your family stressful. It is not just you, many children struggle with eating. Just imagine what your child is feeling. They have to push through 32 steps on the way to eating and swallowing a food. That means climbing 32 steps on a ladder to be able to take that food t...hey already aren’t comfortable with and put it in their mouth without spitting it out. We all do it we achieve 32 steps for each mouthful we have during a meal. Fussy eating in children occurs in many age groups from infants to adolescents. During the term we run SOS food play, and SOS Food Science groups for children to start learning and being comfortable with food. The SOS Approach was developed by Dr Kay Toomey and stands for Sequential Oral Sensory Approach. It focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food. We say that SOS also stands for Save-Our-Ship, because when you are the parent of a child who doesn’t eat well you feel like you are drowning multiple times a day. Our groups allows children to interact with food in a fun, non-stressful way, beginning with the ability to tolerate the food in the room and in front of them, then moving on to touching, kissing, and eventually tasting and eating foods. We are here to have fun, try and learn about new foods, and make sure that we can help make mealtimes at home less stressful!

09.01.2022 | Karina Butler - Occupational Therapist | Karina joined our ESA team in August earlier this year! She is an energetic, outgoing and positive presence in our practice. Karina enjoys working within our Darwin & Palmerston office, but loves adventuring to remote locations such as Tennant Creek to see her clients! Why does Karina enjoy working for ESA and being an OT?... I enjoy working at ESA because of the supportive and fun environment. Everyone is willing to answer questions and share their knowledge and experiences amongst each other for the benefit of our clients, and the odd song, dance and laugh in the office helps to relieve any stress on those busy days. As an OT, I love celebrating the small wins with kids and parents and enjoy helping kids develop their motor and sensory systems and play skills. Where has Karina moved from and why has she chosen to call Darwin home? I moved to Darwin from Perth almost 18 months ago on search of a new adventure, relaxed lifestyle and plentiful opportunities to work in remote communities and with culturally and linguistically diverse families. Something interesting about Karina that her clients may not know... I love singing, playing piano, and my latest hobby is learning the guitar. You’re a wonderful addition to our ESA team! The joy you bring to each of your clients is seen on their faces when they see you as they walk through the practice doors!

What a wonderful start to the year, and welcome to our team members who are new to the NT!

04.01.2022 Does your child poke or wiggle their tongue when they concentrate? Yes, it’s cute, but it also has a purpose! Children frequently have "overflow" movements - physical signs that can be seen when a child is concentrating on a task. They are part of our development and usually, but not always, go away by adulthood. ... Poking out your tongue can also help with stabilising your body, so if you see this happening a lot, check their body is well supported on a chair. What accessory movements have you seen in your kids? Or yourself?

03.01.2022 Whilst at work you can still have fun. Celebrating Melbourne Cup day in style. Showing off some wonderful homemade and stylised fasinators.

03.01.2022 As we come to the end of our first school week, take a moment to see things through your kids’ eyes.

02.01.2022 Some delicious recipes that are easy and fun to cook with your child for Christmas (and even before why not?! ). Although it can be frustrating having to clean up a cluttered, floured, crumbly kitchen, always remember that children learn through messy play (which can happen whilst cooking!). It won’t hurt if your child has squished a bit of dough with their hands and it has ended up on the floor! Even decorated cupcakes with their fingers, whilst perhaps having munche...d on the decorations and licked their fingers prior (I bet as a mum you’ve eaten food they’ve handed you off their plates before once or twice ). Maybe that batch of cupcakes can be just saved to be eaten at home, not by friends or taken to an afternoon tea! Enjoy and most importantly have fun! Great family school holiday activity. https://www.kidspot.com.au//20-kid-friendly-chris/0gkfjfxq

01.01.2022 Have you ever told a child to take a deep breath, and they begin hyperventilating? Some children may need some little assistance to establish a good breathing pattern (and that's perfectly okay!). Remember to always start small - good breathing patterns/techniques can be a very difficult to establish! My personal favourite is Triangle Breathing (so easy for a child to trace the shape anywhere, anytime! You don't necessarily need a pen and paper once they've got the hang of i...t!) Adults can find this hard, so be patient and have fun whilst trying these activities out with your child to find what works best! Various videos, exercises and explanations to included below. They can be just as useful tips for adults as well (handy tip - practice before going off to sleep can help with relaxation). 01.01.2022 | Alice Taylor - Occupational Therapist | This bubbly, outgoing and energy filled Occupational Therapist joined the ESA NT team in February of this year! All of her clients love working with her and always come out of each session with huge smiles on their faces! Why does Alice enjoy working at ESA and being an OT within our team? ... I enjoy working in a fun environment and working with a range of clients and their families. It’s also great that I get the opportunity to service remote communities and continue to lean about the different cultures in Darwin. Where has Alice moved from and why did she make the decision to to call Darwin home? I moved here from Melbourne in search of a new adventure. Darwin has allowed me to experience a different lifestyle by providing me with new experiences and seeing the natural beauty around Darwin regions. What does Alice love to do in her down time when she’s not working in the clinic or remotely? I enjoy getting out and about on the weekends, exploring what the Northern Territory has to offer. Some of my favourite places I’ve explored are Maguk, Jatbula Trail and Douglas Daly River. We are so grateful to have your creativity, huge smile and amazing energy within our clinic at ESA NT Alice!
