25.01.2022 Sometimes the social world can feel overwhelming. So much so that you may want to retreat to what you knw, what's familar and what's comfortable. We get it. But we go beyond just your typical "social skills". We delve into the why of the social scene. If we know why we are doing something, it makes it so much easier to practice, espcially when it doesn't feel natural or easy. Communication with connection, it's what we do. Let us help connect you to the social world that you want to be part of.

20.01.2022 My last client on a Tuesday brings me so much joy! We have been working hard on this owls literacy skills and he is doing amazing! This kid blows my mind. He’s faced so many challenges and he just keeps kicking goals. He also has a power house of a Mum in his corner and together they are beyond amazing As a reward for our literacy hard work we get to write/narrate silly stories together. He loves this. I write the text, sentence by sentence and by the end he is reading t...he passage fluently. Today, we cracked each other up #earlystartspeechpathology #literacy #makingtherapyfun #neverunderestimate #ASD #asdmum

19.01.2022 TELEHEALTH I have had so much fun getting a resource pack together this week for one of my owls who I see via Telehealth. This owl lives all the way in Broken Hill so I hope it arrives in time for our next session! How amazing is it that the team at Early Start are able to support our client’s language, speech, literacy and social skill development goals from so far away?!... 17.01.2022 Favourite apps to use with your children: When using technology to help with their speech and language goals the best way to do this is to sit with them and talk with them about what they are doing. This not only lets you engage with your child but it also ensures that they are completing the activities and learning from the activity. My three favourite apps are: Glow draw apps you can use this for so many things such as reading and spelling homework. We obviously want our ...kids to be able to write with pen and paper but sometimes a small change every now and again can help with motivation. Errors are easily deleted and the kids can pick their favourite colour to write with. You can also use it for following instructions draw a bird next to the tree Dr Panda apps (especially the Handyman version) This app is not designed for any targets in particular so I always tell my kids they can play a game at the end. Whilst they are playing though, I can ask them which room are you in?, tell me what you are fixing, What do you need to do next, has anything broken at your house? (and if so) how do you fix it? Mad Libs for my older owls. This app is great because you target all different types of word groups such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, vocabulary (e.g. body parts, things that are green, etc), grammar (plurals) and then at the end you have a crazy story that the child can read out and laugh at all the ridiculous sentences they have created. I’ve had lots of belly laughs from this one. If you’re not sure how to use apps with your children or would like to know more apps that may be suitable for your child speak to your therapist. 17.01.2022 I love watching a shiny new visual schedule come together. I can’t wait to see my owl’s face when he see’s that I’ve used his favourite colours and activities to help him plan his routine, and even plan for changes that might happen in his routine. He’s well on his way to becoming a flexible thinker! - Tabitha

16.01.2022 Why is repetition an important learning tool? Almost nothing beats the feeling I get when I walk into our waiting room to see one of my little owls and a HUGE smile comes across their face. Except the feeling I get when they follow that HUGE grin with a request for an activity: ball, animals, monkey, food! Activities we have done before, activities they love. ... But why are we going to do the same thing all over again? Why is repetition so great for little learners? They've just requested something spontaneously let's reward that positive communication and show them that their communication and requests are meaningful! They are clearly loving the activity and are not bored by it, so let's expand from it, let's vary it. We can go from saying hi with the animals, to giving the animals some food, to tucking the animals into bed and singing them a nursery rhyme. You can introduce new vocabulary in a familiar activity. They can predict what will happen next because they have done it before. This creates the perfect opportunity for you to hold back and wait for their words, or gesture, to move the activity forward. Any new skill takes repetition to master, and children's learning, language and play development is no different, so don't be afraid to do the same thing 2-3 (hundred ) times. -Tabitha #earlystartspeechpathology #children #play #connection #languagedevelopment

16.01.2022 I’ve been loving trialling this AAC iPad app, aacorn, recently with one of my owls who has limited verbal skills. He’s such as clever cookie with using his single word low tech device that this has been such as great way of stepping up from single words to using short phrases. AACORN is an affordable, easy to use AAC option that predicts what words might logically come next in the sentence after you have selected your beginning image - like predictive text but with pictures... instead! It has a wide range of images and any images that are not included are able to be added easily. Can’t wait to see what my owls are capable of coming out with using this app! -Lara H #earlystart #earlystartspeechpathology #appsforkids #AAC #aacslp

15.01.2022 One of my favourite apps to use in speech sessions is definitely Sock Puppets. In this app, you can pick your character, background and even change how your voice sounds, then press the record button and watch as the puppet lip syncs what you say! My 4 favourite things about this app are:... It is very versatile and can be used for any goal practicing speech sounds How many /k/ words can you say in a minute? Retelling stories Practicing conversation skills such as asking questions and making comments Colourful and interactive Easily adaptable for a variety of ages Free on app store yep FREE! Remember, using apps for targeting therapy goals is most effective when another person uses the app with them. You are your child’s best communication facilitator! #earlystart #earlystartspeechpathology #appsforkids

11.01.2022 World Autism Awareness Day Friday April 2nd. Embrace Everyone, Be Yourself, Be different, Be amazing!

10.01.2022 Ahoy me hearties!!! It has been all Pirates this week in my sessions. I found a variety of pirate themed activities to do using all our pirate treasures. We were able to target joint attention and team work using the Pirate puzzle. The puzzle also proved popular for creating swashbuckling stories of adventures and helping us with our speech sound work. A little one's imaginary play developed with the use of the hand puppet and all the children loved looking through the story ...book and discovering all the crazy things happening within the pages (especially the pop up pirate ship!!) Using a child's interests is fantastic for targeting so many different goals whether that be language, social skills or speech sounds. It keeps them interested and motivated throughout the session. I have had so much fun with this set of activities this week. What are your little ones interested in? -Hannah #earlystartspeechpathology #playbasedtherapy #SLP

07.01.2022 At Early Start we can help with your childs speech, language, social and literacy skills. We can help build the foundations of these skills so they not only catch up but exceed expecations. We never underestimate a child's ability. Let us help them fly!

04.01.2022 This week we are each sharing our favourite apps that we use in therapy. We love what technology has brought to speech pathology, however, it's always important to remember that as parents, you are their best teacher! Apps can be great when the parent and child look at it together, don't be afraid to stop and start, take turns, use it to comment and to be silly with. One of my favourite apps to use is #articulationstation. It's great for kids working on their speech sounds ...at home. It's fun, interactive and easy to use. You can download the single sounds that your child is working on too, rather than needing the whole library. - Amy https://apps.apple.com//a/articulation-station/id467415882
