Since July, at least 12 breeding pairs of Bush Stone-Curlews have been reported by residents using Councils online tool, www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/bushstonecurlew Chicks are now starting to hatch (like the ones pictured ) and are looking strong and healthy. Public parks and private properties around Tweed Heads, Fingal Head, Kingscliff, Chinderah, Hastings Point and Pottsville support a number of Bush Stone-Curlews. Chicks are particularly vulnerable - however the actions of residents by reporting sightings and joining in Councils efforts to protect nesting areas of both Bush Stone-Curlews and Beach Stone-Curlews have resulted in encouraging numbers of breeding pairs. However the populations are still at risk and residents are reminded to heed signage and fencing and dont approach the birds as this put unnecessary stress on the parents, slow down on roads and keep dogs well away.
