20.01.2022 Potential for developing learning dispositions of curiosity, perseverance, problem solving and confidence (MTOP Outcome 4) through rich open-ended digital learning experiences.

20.01.2022 Looking beyond what we did Let’s face it, we are now spoilt for choice in the way we document in this age of digital technology. Those of us who’ve been around for a while will remember when documentation was 100% paper based, and our choices were limited to the colour of our felt tip pens, and whether we used mind maps or tables, or A3 or A4! How things have changed! Now we can easily create photo observations, video observations, voice recordings, electronic checklists,... and anything else the digital age has gifted us with. But has this new technology improved the quality of documentation? If our photos, videos and electronic gadgets are just being used to share what we did, have we made progress? Or have we actually regressed in the quality of documentation we’re producing? I guess it all depends on what we do with the technology. According to the National Quality Agenda Review (2017), whatever format we are using to document, it must focus on an aspect of learning not just what we did. So, I guess the question to be asked is, are my photos, videos, and voice recordings documenting learning? Or are they just showcasing what we did today? 20.01.2022 Linking Children’s Goals to the Program Something we’re often asked is: How can we link our children’s goals to the program? If this is something you have been wondering, visit https://getearlyworks.com.au/linking-childrens-goals-to-th/

19.01.2022 Are your individual child planning cycles rating and assessment ready? Educators and Administrators can now check that every child has at least one complete individual planning cycle from the click of a button in the Child List. When the ‘Recent Planning Cycle’ button is clicked, EarlyWorks will generate an individual planning cycle report for the child. The report will show the most recent two cycles if available. Where there are more than two observations of an ex...perience, EarlyWorks will choose the most recent one. Where there are journals and observations of an experience, the most recent observation will be selected. Where there are only journals, the most recent journal will be selected. This feature will serve so many purposes in a busy service: Education Leaders will be able to easily check that every child in every room is having their learning documented as part of an ongoing cycle. Educators will be able to check that they are linking their observations and experiences and creating learning cycles for all of the children in their rooms. Educators and Education Leaders will be able to use these automatically generated planning cycle reports during ratings and assessments to talk through the planning cycle for randomly selected children in their rooms. When sharing learning journeys with families, educators will be able to more easily explain the cycle of learning.

19.01.2022 This week I had the pleasure of chatting to Katrina from Noah’s Ark Care and Learning Centre in Berkeley Vale, New South Wales. One of Katrina’s roles is Community Officer. With all that has been going on with Covid-19 and the impact that is having on families, community engagement has become incredibly important. 18.01.2022 Happy Birthday, Elizabeth... well kind of... Our office will be closed this Monday 28th September for the Queen's Birthday public holiday in WA. We will, however, still be monitoring our emails. So if you need to contact us, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

17.01.2022 How can we get the rating we know we deserve? We are working SO hard, and feel we’re providing an outstanding service, yet we can’t seem to have this reflected in our rating! Where are we going wrong? Sound familiar? Visit https://getearlyworks.com.au/how-can-we-get-the-rating-we-k

15.01.2022 I know we need to move to online documentation, but I’m scared! I’m not very good with computers! I feel so comfortable using paper, why change?... What if I can’t keep pace with everyone else? I know I’m good at my job. I love working with children, but I’m useless with technology! Help! Does this sound familiar? All of these fears are totally understandable. At EarlyWorks we have great respect for educators. Educators are not just educators, they are psychologists, peace makers, chefs, cleaners, gardeners, artists, musicians, crafts people, photographers, curriculum developers this list goes on. And now, educators are expected to be computer experts. The thing is, I was probably one of the most resistant to the change to digital anything. I was a late adopter of texting, email, and don’t get me started on social media! I only started using Facebook three years ago when I had to for EarlyWorks. So I totally get it. One of the parts of my role at EarlyWorks that I love the most, is working with Educators as they begin their EarlyWorks’ journey. So many Educators are pleasantly surprised by how much success and even enjoyment they get when they start exploring EarlyWorks, and we are there by their side for the whole journey. Interestingly, the Educators who are quickest to find their feet with EarlyWorks, tend to be those who have a thorough understanding of early childhood education and care and the planning cycle. Being a technology superstar is definitely not a requirement in adapting to change. When you’re ready to make the transition from paper to online documentation, we will be there to support you: Free online training from the security of your computer screen at your service. All you need to do is watch and ask questions. Free ongoing phone and email support (we are locally based in Western Australia). Free Quick Start videos on our website Free User Manual Free access to the EarlyWorks’ blog I look forward to sharing your journey soon. https://getearlyworks.com.au/

11.01.2022 All of our positive thoughts and prayers are going out to our friends in Victoria. You are certainly doing it tough at the moment, and all of us at EarlyWorks are thinking of you. Now is probably a good time to re-share our ‘At Home Activity’ blog. In this blog we explain how to use EarlyWorks’ home activity function. Home activities allow services to continue to support families when children are unable to come to the service. If you have any questions about the home activities, please feel free to be in touch. https://getearlyworks.com.au/home-activity-experiences

06.01.2022 More than just play One of the most rewarding parts of my role of education consultant, is chatting with educators about how they might document different aspects of their program in EarlyWorks. A service might be introducing yoga, mindfulness, or pottery, and want to talk through how to best document their planning. During these conversations we often chat about how to best communicate to families what we are doing, and importantly why we are doing it. At the same ti...me, we may also want to provide enough detail for families to follow up at home. We want to ensure families understand that there is more to our program than spontaneous play! For more visit https://getearlyworks.com.au/more-than-just-play

05.01.2022 I was doing a spring clean of my office this weekend and came across an article from 2007 by Sarah Wise ‘Building relationships between parents and carers in early childhood’. Although the article was written some time ago, much of it was still relevant.

04.01.2022 One Experience So Much Learning One of the joys of working with young children is the unpredictability. Every day presents a whole new set of challenges, surprises, and humorous moments. I think one of the reasons for this is that children are all unique. This diversity does present a challenge: if we have 30 children of varying ages in our care each week, how do we plan for differences in learning, interests, personalities, and cultures? That’s a good question.... The good news? There is a solution, and it’s a simple one. Visit https://getearlyworks.com.au/one-experience-so-much-learning for more...

03.01.2022 To comply with the National Quality Standard, families need to be informed about the Program (QA1.3.3) and an important part of the Program is the daily routine: those things that happen on a regular basis but may not be added as planned activities or experiences. For example, lunch time, rest time, or arriving in the morning. Here is a simple way to add the Daily Routine to EarlyWorks - https://getearlyworks.com.au/sharing-your-daily-routine-wit

02.01.2022 Upon Reflection A question that is often asked by users of EarlyWorks is ‘How often should services complete reflections of pedagogy?’ And, ‘If we are using evaluations of experiences and we are using program comments, do we also need to individually complete reflections of pedagogy?... More at https://getearlyworks.com.au/upon-reflection/
