13.01.2022 Raffia - 100% natural and therefore biodegradable. Raffia is a straw-like material from a palm tree in Madagascar. It is very soft and beautiful to touch, is pliable, strong and extremely durable, easy to dye and biodegradable, making it an excellent material for weaving baskets. The harvesting of the raffia palm tree is only done during the months from June to October each year, which allows the branches and leaves to re-grow before the next year and the next harvest season.... The dying and the packing are done manually by local artisan people with the utmost respect for the environment, and this is in fact controlled by strict government laws. To create the raffia fibre, the raffia palm tree’s leaves are cut vertically and given a nice little sunbathe to dry. They turn into strands and the green colour of the fresh raffia palm leaves turns into beige raffia strings. They are washed in a stream, and then tinted all using traditional method and then handwoven into the raffia sheets, that are then hand sewn into a bag. Not just the raffia fibre is used. When a raffia palm tree branch is harvested it is used as a whole - the leafstalks are used to build furniture and the leaf blades are used for roofing.
