21.01.2022 There's light at the end of the tunnel... Every once in a while, an opportunity presents itself to revisit the intended plan, and to rethink what now seems the most logical solution. Looking at a 2D, or even a 3D modelled plan for that matter, does not give one a real sense of the space in the same way being able to stand in the space does.... Spatial planning and design is not, and shouldn't be static, and what may seem like design on the run, is really an opportunity to resolve and improve on what the original intended direction was, as is the case with this window placement at our Salisbury project. 19.01.2022 Bathroom furniture has come a long way. In today's terms, a vanity (or sometimes a vanity unit) is a piece of bathroom furniture that most often combines a sink, countertop, and mirror. What we call a vanity today was originally called a toilet table. In fact, there are records of Thomas Chippendale (a renowned London cabinetmaker) making a toylet table in 1762. Over the next century, the popular term became dressing table and then eventually vanity table.... 18.01.2022 Every year for the past 5 years I have created a fundraiser for a deserving person who needs a little help...and this year I have chosen a beautiful soul who is a community nurse. Ms G is one of the most selfless human beings I have met in my lifetime....a generous and giving spirit, who works 60 - 80 hours a week as a community nurse, offering respite and pallative care in the community. An unfortunate bathroom leak resulted in significant damage which meant her bathroom had... to be completely renovated, with limited funds and no insurance. Now I am on a crusade to redecorate her whole unit and I need your help. I am optimistic that with some help from the kindness of strangers, I am able to redecorate her small two bedroom townhouse, to create a sanctuary for her to enjoy when she has moments to herself. I am hoping to raise enough money to add some robe internals in her bedroom. Reveal day is always a very exciting day for us...and we are particularly proud of this project, and grateful to our clients who entrusted us with creating the finished interior of their home, and not without the challenges posed by the global pandemic - as it was done entirely online, via email and WhatsApp, as they are based in Singapore, and due to COVID have not been able t...o travel back to Australia. 11.01.2022 Each project starts out with an idea - the dream phase - which becomes clearer when the ideas are narrowed down into a concept. Once the concept has been agreed upon - we then move to the design development phase - this is when the planning begins in earnest - floor plans, elevations, cabinetry, selections, specifications, finishes, fixtures, fittings, furniture, furnishings, decor and the project costings. 07.01.2022 Let's chat about bathroom "updates". Of late we have been receiving a number of enquiries for bathroom "updates" where homeowners don't necessarily want to renovate the whole bathroom, but want to refresh it. It sounds simple enough, but when it comes to wanting to change fixtures and fittings. tapware, shower rails, vanities and toilets it gets a little trickier.... It is all good and well if the idea was just to replace like for like - but more often than not that is not what the intention of the "update" is. With so many options to choose from, one would think it would be easy to find a towel rail with the exact same dimensions and fixing points as the one you are wanting to replace, same goes for shower rails...and oh not to forget the notion that a toilet roll holder or a shower mixer can just be changed over with a new one. One would think that because of the many design options available they would have thought about universal sizes - unfortunately this is not the case. The other tricky bit is changing over a shower rail, mixer or shower head - particularly mixers - because they are roughed-in, which means changing the inwall mechanism without removing tiles and compromising the waterproofing could be a challenge. Changing a vanity could also pose similar challenges with plumbing, and if the faucet and taps are coming off the wall it is again not as simple as just rushing off to your local hardware store and buying new tapware. Sometimes the bandaid approach to bathroom updates is not the smartest way about going about things. Understandably budget often times is the motivation behind the decision to "update" - but in our experience bathrooms are the one room in the house where you can't afford to make the wrong decision. Bathrooms are also one of the most expensive spaces in a home to renovate - so spending your money wisely is the sensible thing to do. 07.01.2022 Naturally one one expect that following on from our "grand entrance" reveal yesterday, that there had to be more...and there is! The original kitchen (scroll to the end to see it), was disproportionately small for the size and scale of the house, with an awkward layout - including an unused meals area located directly next to the formal dining space, "feature" bulkheads which were as we found out an afterthought to conceal beams that could have been built into the ceiling spa...ce...and the style of the original kitchen was at odds with the "Hamptons" inspired architecture of the house. Fortunately - thanks to the unused meals area - the opportunity was ripe for the picking - we could correct the size of the kitchen utilising all the space - and design a style appropriate kitchen for the family. The wish-list included - getting rid of the bulkheads, a large island bench, loads of storage, a coffee station, a wine fridge and good lighting. What do you think? 03.01.2022 If you're going to make an entrance it may as well be a grand one... A once dark (no natural light) entry and staircase has been transformed into a space now flooded with natural light by adding a Velux skylight over the stairs. The original solid timber doors were also replaced with glass paned doors to further aid natural light.... We also removed some "feature" wing walls that was making the space feel confined - which it isn't - and repainted the interior of the house with a warm white tone that helps reflect the light.
