25.01.2022 We are excited that next week I will be speaking and presenting at our EBAA annual conference at Bamarang Bush Retreat alongside our special guest speaker Professor Gernot Minke. Pleased to say we have a full house. If you have missed out or you couldn't make it from Victoria then you have another chance to hear Gernot speak. He will be presenting at Yoga Vic near Daylesford a week later on the 6th October 2018. https://www.yogavic.org.au/calendar/october

17.01.2022 Earth building has been part of the built environment of this continent since before settlement in 1788. That was recorded by pioneers and explorers, though not shared widely. That history has been lost. Since settlement earth played an important role in providing anything from basic shelter to grand private and public buildings. Earth building includes wattle and daub, cob, sod, mudbrick and rammed earth or pisé. The early colonies were built using earth traditions brought ...by settlers from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Although much of the early settlement of Sydney was built with earth, constant development pressure means nothing remains in the Sydney Basin today. As is often the case plenty remains in the countryside. I am about to start work on restoring a very significant cob building in NSW that is close to 200 years old and that is exciting. It is one of the earliest earth buildings in an area rich in early earth buildings. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in this country. The location is O'Connell, NSW where the first settlement over the Blue Mountains began. It is rich with both cob and wattle and daub buildings. Along with some restoration I will develop a number of workshops designed to help people with these precious earth buildings identify the technique used, avoid deterioration, preserve and protect them, maintain and operate the building efficiently into the future. 12.01.2022 Interested in sustainable building, natural building or green roofs? We enjoyed another brilliant EBAA annual earth building conference at Bamarang Bush Retreat. Our keynote speaker was Prof Gernot Minke. Gernot has so much knowledge to share. If you missed him last weekend then you have just one more chance in Australia. He will be presenting at Yoga Vic near Daylesford this weekend on the 6th October 2018. https://www.yogavic.org.au/calendar/october

10.01.2022 Finished something a little different today. A bridge 8.5m long and 2.4m onto the mezzanine floor of an artist's studio built using stacked shipping containers. The bridge was built using recycled hardwood power poles and sawn ironbark decking planks cut from trees cleared from the site.

10.01.2022 People ask whether straw, hemp hurd, sawdust, etc....rot away over time inside earth walls. Earth walls actually protect anything within the mix or in contact like timber lintels, beams, poles and joinery. I found something extraordinary inside poorly made mudbricks last week whilst undertaking repairs on a rustic artist’s cottage. When removing bricks made with cement stabilized subsoil and even topsoil I spotted something green deep within the wall. A blade of grass preserved as it was perhaps 40 years earlier. The chlorophyll was still present. Less than 2 m away on the ground I found a matching blade of grass.

03.01.2022 On completion we load tested it with my truck. Didn't realise it was Friday 13th till just now.

03.01.2022 Happy to support this effort along with NZ's new codes. Around the world earth material is nature's gift for both natural builders and those seeking shelter. Unlike most manufactured building products profits from sales doesn't pay for R and D and testing needed to satisfy codes. A little money from a lot of people will raise the funds needed. Keep up the good work! The CRI deserves and needs grassroots support!

02.01.2022 Just a few days left before the conference. We're going to have fun with mud while learning more about earth building. We have great speakers with interesting topics. Exciting! ...bookings close on 25th Sept. After this date, ring 0429321104 for availability.
