25.01.2022 This is one of the first landscape contracts I designed and managed in Margaret River, WA. The client was Pinda Lodge B'n'B. They wanted to build a gazebo in the parkland-like, grass slope leading down to the banks of Margaret River. I wanted to have the gazebo appear like it was 'floating' above a water body to give it more impact and to help it fit into the landscape more naturally. The inspiration was the Golden Temple in Japan, which many of you will know and I have included a photo of it. I famously burnt down and was rebuilt but that is another story. The gazebo and pond worked really well, but we had to discourage some over-zealous fishermen from throwing a line in after their bbq, to protect the fabric liner which enabled the pond to retain water. Happy days .....

24.01.2022 The Botanica exhibition is a sumptuous, beauty fest for nature lovers that will be closing this week. So, I have uploaded some photos here for those who won't get the chance to see it. I apologize for the light reflected through the windows, but I think you get the drift .......

19.01.2022 Sculptures can take a landscape design to the next level. When owners of a garden you have designed and installed, add wonderful sculptures - it's just the icing on the cake. They add a new dimension and in Solange Rousset's courtyard, where she added a simple bird to the branch of a tree, it gives a sense of lyric playfulness - it reminds me of Michael Leunig's ducks. The glass sculpture, which looks like a arc of a giant kangaroo paw flower was bought by one of my clients... at the 'sculptures by the sea' exhibition in Cottesloe one year and installed in their garden in Rosa Brook W.A. At Rapid's Landing in Margaret River, Bill James and myself created a playground with all sorts of native (sculpted) wildlife alighting on the rammed earth piers of the boundary wall. You'll see ducks, owls and blue wrens in branches. These were all made of recycled farm machinery by an artist in Perth. The base of each needed to be sturdy and he repurposed a plough-share for the job. The last photo is a large sound sculpture which was added later, to a park Bill and I designed in Denmark, W.A. It is called Koorabup park and is well worth a visit if you're in Denmark and looking for somewhere to wander along the river or to take the kids to an adventure playground. It's fun to play with art, don't you think?

11.01.2022 How do we weave together our diverse interests into a unique whole? Those interests take residence in us until we meld them with who we are. We become the personification of them. If the energy of nature, design and healing are among yours, you may like to make yourself your favourite beverage and enjoy reading this addition to the articles on my website. Please get in touch, if this resonates with you too......... http://earthessencelandscape.com.au/my-journey-toward-crea/

03.01.2022 There are plans with the Office of Environment and Heritage to lease six buildings in South Head National Park, to a single, private developer. It has caused an uproar in our tight-knit, local community, which is already challenged by traffic congestion and ferry loads of tourists on the weekends. The salient points are however, that this is an oasis of tranquility in a densely populated city, an area of extraordinary natural beauty and the first landing place of Captain Ph...illip in 1788. Most importantly though, it is supposed to be protected by the government agency in which it is entrusted, for use by the general public both today and for the generations to come, simply by virtue of its status as a National Park. This may sound like a case of 'No-In-My-BackYard-ism', but its not, because I support appropriate development, but this proposal seems to benefit one private investor and select people who attend the various functions, at the cost of keeping the park available for everyone. Period. At the moment, Tim Ella, an Indigenous elder of the Dharawal-Yuin people (pictured in the foreground below), is running Kadoo tours at South Head, as well as similar ones at La Perouse. These provide a genuine experience of the landscape and a unique insight into the oldest living culture on earth. When I spoke to Tim, his desire was to look after the land that his ancestors had lived in, to share the knowledge of how they lived, the traditional uses of plants and animals for food, medicine and ceremony. 'To see the land through aboriginal eyes' as he put it. This is a use of the National Park that I can totally get behind! Let's support Kadoo tours, who can help us look after this sadly neglected, iconic National Park and help restore its natural beauty as well as its national significance - a win-win ! https://www.kadootours.com.au/short-tours/ #savesouthhead Catherine Stallman Mary Porter, Louise Thurtell Judy Tietzel-berry Chloe Burns Stuart Spence
