24.01.2022 Has been an absolute honour to be by this new mama’s side through birth and postpartum

19.01.2022 So special getting to enter the postpartum bubble of my birth mentoring client, witness her fitting into new her skin as a mother and meet her gorgeous newborn bub. We debriefed her birth experience, accompanied by a slide show of epic photos and video clips taken by @nambuccabirthphotographer. Before I left I put some nourishing treats and dinner in her fridge for tonight. Laura travelled with me through my birth mentoring journey over 6 sessions in her pregnancy. I admired... her willingness & open mind to learn about the ultimate conditions for physiological birth, navigating the hospital system and ultimately, come to know herself the birthing woman. We also spent a session on planning for postpartum. Laura made many shifts during our time together, letting go of limiting thought concepts and bringing her courage to the surface. I'm not surprised one bit that she had a birth that she feels proud of. I loved hearing the replay of your powerful birth roar, Laura. I'm so amazed by your journey and I'm so grateful to have been apart of it See more

19.01.2022 Breastfeeding is a gift that I don't take for granted. I hope this week of celebration brings more awareness to the importance of breastfeeding and the support that mamas require to establish and maintain breastfeeding their child #internationalbreastfeedingweek. For an action so natural, breastfeeding is a learned activity. Society is no longer structured intergenerationally, so it's common to not see breastfeeding in action at all in our adult life. This is why new mothers ...need guidance. I had challenges with my first baby as her initial latch damaged my nipples. It took many weeks of searching for the right advice & 6 weeks of painful feeding. I'll never forget the shock at how hard it was! I had incentive to not give up and it got easier as we learned together. Breastfeeding mamas need to be well resourced because the energy output to their babies is massive! A Chinese Doctor explained to me that feeding for a maximum of 6 months is ideal. I was shocked by this opinion, but he explained that traditionally, extended feeding was normal because of the support of the tribe. Grandmothers & aunties shared the duties of the home and cooking for the mama. It's no wonder modern mamas, carrying this on their own, are tired. It's no wonder that low milk supply is common, especially when you look at the rates of birth trauma that are known to impact milk production. As someone that is choosing to breastfeed long term, I value breastfeeding beyond its nutritional elements. There's also the emotional connection and security it creates. For me & many mamas I know, emotional development of our children outweighs being exhausted. I wish it wasn't a choice of one or the other. Therefore self care is critical and we need to honour ourselves for the task we undertake! In a society that doesn't truly support breastfeeding, it's a huge achievement! I also want to celebrate the mamas that are pumping milk around the clock when breastfeeding is impacted by medical reasons. This takes much strength & determination and I'm inspired by your sacrifice and love. Tired or not, I recognise my privilege to have exclusively breastfed both by my babies. Communities that don't have access to clean water and quality food are easily swayed thar formula is optimal. Formula is being used as a tool of colonisation and the lineage of breastfeeding is being disrupted. Its important to keep normalizing breastfeeding and spreading awareness about the benefits. Here's to breastfeeding mamas and breast milk, that they recieve the reverence, support and protection they deserve.
