23.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day! I feel very #lucky to live in a part of the world where #women can and do shine in the myriad roles they play in society, at home and work. My beautiful fiance surprised me with a visit home from his work this morning (he works 1.5 hours away ... #didowife) and when he got here he greeted me with a #gorgeous new #indoorplant to celebrate this day of #recognition for women. He is so #proud of me and all I strive to do and contribute as a #woman in #science and #conservation. I'm surrounded by so many #strong and #inspiring women. And when we are backed by #loving and #supportive men...well, we are #unstoppable!
20.01.2022 She was kind enough to pose...as long as I didn't get too close #AustralianDarter soaking up some of the last #summer #sun on offer here in #WA. #Riverside of course! Where else would you see a waterbird ? Morning walks along the #river My #peace, my #serenity I must add, this morning I was accompanied by the one and only @leethallee71 he was in fine form...making me laugh every minute with his random witty humour. How much can a girl laugh while exercising?!? A lot!
08.01.2022 Okay peoples... Monday's lesson is of the #botanical variety. Fun fact - #plants have all manner of sexual orientations. Many of the flowers you see are in fact #hermaphrodites (boy and girl bits). This is not an accident. This is a result of the very first examples of this 'mutation' having a much greater chance of producing more #offspring. So...they are the ones that survived and proliferated....and bam!.... #evolution in action. However there are examples around that did...n't get on that natural selection train. Introducing our very own #she-oaks (#Allocasuarina / #Casuarina). I saw these in flower on my walk yesterday morning. They come and go quickly so thought I would grab a snap to share. The plants (#trees) are either #female (red flowers) or #male (yellow sausage shaped). Wind #pollination is the name of the game but also insects I think Anyhow, this is an example of a #dioecious plants - it means two houses - boys in one, girls in another. Like boarding school but we all know that doesn't always keep 'em separated These plants are no exception. P.s. the cones we all curse when we stand on them at the beach come from the female tree they are what appears where the red flowers were post pollination. @ Applecross, Western Australia See more
06.01.2022 #Chilling in a caravan park in #Boddington - listening to the #birds and thinking how much I miss being in the field, away from the city, close to #nature One day.... I had planned on doing some work on my laptop this evening. Alas I have a bug rendering the device not usable. I'm taking it as an #invitation to just enjoy the #serenity as the sun sets on a warm day in the#southwest
05.01.2022 We may have to #wearamask in public in #Perth, but that doesn't mean the #environment should have to pay the price for our heartless and careless ways - it's how this all started (which many seem to have forgotten) and how it continues to be a problem. No #singleuse masks in my house! #Reusable all the way!!
05.01.2022 #Tropical #islands aren't always all about the #sun #sand and #sea. Sometimes it's #stormy and #windy and a little unnerving No matter what, #nature continues to blow my mind with how much #beauty it has to show us.
