09.01.2022 Today is 'R U OK day'. But as a colleague sent an article saying every day should be an R U Ok Day. At Earth Matters Consulting we have a thing for designing gardens for therapy. I have written blogs, designed show gardens on that theme - all to drive home the point that Nature is Restorative and we all will gain plenty by engaging with nature. This was a show garden we did at Rivendell Flower Show in 2017: DESTINATION RECHARGE This garden is as all gardens ought to be, a pla...ce for contemplation and rejuvenation A garden allows for differing levels of engagement with nature, thereby allowing control over the extent of its restorative effect. Destination Recharge gives a choice to everyone who uses it, of any ability, to engage with nature on their own terms, in their own way and at their own pace. The design is based on a Pentacle which has long been considered to be a symbol of balance and health. A golden spiral which encircles the pentacle coheses the centric nature of the design. A labyrinth in the central area viewed from the deck further adds to the healing aspect of the garden. This garden is a representation of what a healing garden can be like; whether it is on a domestic scale or in a larger context. The principles applied are what makes it a restorative garden. 09.01.2022 The word OVERSHOOT- when we say we overshot the mark or the address/location, we backtrack to correct the overshoot. So what's EARTH OVERSHOOT? It is when the demand on the planet's resources exceeds what the planet can re-generate in that year. For the past half a century, human populace has been blowing the earth's ecological budget, making the overshoot day/period to move closer and closer, ie shortening the time span in which the entire year's ecological budget gets cons...umed earlier and earlier. 'To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day, Global Footprint Network calculates the number of days that Earth’s biocapacity can provide for humanity’s Ecological Footprint'. So how do we backtrack here? Obvious to the footprint extent are carbon emissions, forest harvest, food demand. The pandemic of Covid has brought a significant change to the over shoot day by extending it by three weeks. The main drivers for a 9.3% reduction have been (a) The carbon Footprint (reduced 14.5% from 2019) and the forest product Footprint (reduced 8.4% from 2019). Isn't that highly encouraging? This has provided a much needed impetus to the movement of sustainability and in words of Pip Russell of Schnider Electric, ' If we shift the sustainability conversation from being noble to fundamentally necessary, we have an opportunity to focus on building the future we want, one where humanity thrives within the means of our only planet'.
