10.01.2022 A glass of dairy milk produces almost three times more greenhouse gases than any plant milk - so if you’ve chosen to give up dairy for planetary health - there’s a clear impact from your switch Or maybe you are choosing the shift as a health choice because the unwanted cholesterol and common digestive symptoms that accompany consumption of hormonal fluid (aka cows milk) are not what floats your boat. Regardless of your reasoning - here’s some interesting facts on how... the biggest dairy alternatives stack up against each other from a sustainability perspective! OMG OAT: increasingly popular, oat milk is a front runner in the low carbon footprint realm; with land use and water use needed for production being significantly low compared to other options. SOY: also low on the land and water use scale, soy is a widely available choice with a decent protein hit. One drawback is that soybeans are grown in massive quantities globally to feed livestock and is one of the highest pesticide contaminated crops - so our advice is to choose organic/nonGMO when choosing soy products. ALMOND: unfortunately the more water intensive of the dairy alternatives, and it’s production in the US has had a devastating effect on the bee population - almond crops require bees to pollinate their flowers + reproduce - however high pesticide use is wiping them out. So if choosing almond, try to seek brands that use Aussie almonds (not imported!) and are pesticide free (organic). RICE: like it’s mate almond, rice milk is also one of the more water intensive when it comes to production. It’s among the cheaper of the bunch, however it produces more emissions than most. COCONUT: because coconut trees grow in tropical climates, the global demand for coconut products is exploiting workers in third world countries and contributing to rainforest deforestation. A work-around to this is to choose certified fairtrade products however they can be hard to find. The bigger picture? Everything leaves a carbon footprint. Choosing plant milk over dairy is already a consumer choice that is positive from a planetary health perspective. Choose what appeals to you, but empower yourself with knowing more about behind the scenes

09.01.2022 THE BLUE ZONES For years we have been fascinated by Dan Buettner's research on the Blue Zones - the areas in the world where there are the highest concentrations of centenarians (people who live to 100!). There are a bunch of common themes amongst the blue zones, that are likely to be responsible for their health and in particular, their longevity #longlives These include:... physical activity life purpose plant-based dietary patterns social support + community stress management limited to no alcohol consumption moderate caloric intake family structure spirituality Whilst we may not all individually align or familiarise ourselves with all the above factors, there are evident strong themes that we can aspire to. And we know they're all good for us Move more. Eat more plants. Build a strong supportive community. Find purpose. The 5 Blue Zones are: Okinawa, Japan; Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica and Loma Linda, California. Dan, can we add @earthtobodycroydon to the list? Coz we plan to live a long time and so do our members #bluezones #longevity #community #purpose #greenvibes #strongtribe #longlives #earthtobody
