25.01.2022 Three Tasmanian teachers had the time of their lives at Stony Head as part of the #BushBlitz #TeachLive program. Ben Smethurst of Kingston High got up close and personal with the Stony Head invertebrates. He gained valuable field experience with scientists and unique knowledge of Tasmania’s flora and fauna to take back to his students. Ruth Whelan of the Sustainability Learning Centre & Lindisfarne Primary School found a ‘long legged, short legged grasshopper thing’, identifi...ed by scientists as Psednura pedestris. Helen Wilson of Launceston Church Grammar taught live from the field to grade 5&6 students. Helen inspired students with demonstrations of specimen collection techniques and a live Q&A session between her students and #BushBlitz scientists.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to the winners of our Scavenger Hunt on iNaturalist.org: * Individual winner - Thomas Mesaglio (@thebeachcomber) * Group winner - Bjorn & Ka...sper Howorth (@jasmineh) * Primary School winner - Kongwak Junior School (@kongwak-junior-p-3) One of Thomas' observations was the first record on iNaturalist of "Sauroconcha sheaia" (a type of native land snail) . It seemed a bit unfair to compare those just starting out on their iNaturalist journey with the likes of Thomas, so we will be sending some extra prizes to three of our younger entrants who were all Highly Commended - Anna Sheary (11 years), Abby Sheary (9 years) and Lana Goodall (13 years). While looking for a crustacean, the children at Kongwak Junior School spotted an unusual blue Common Rough Woodlouse. Thanks to the magic of iNaturalist, viral taxonomist @jameskdouch was on hand to explain what they had found - a woodlouse infected with "Invertebrate iridescent virus 31". This was only the second record of the virus in Australia and the questions and answers that followed in the comments of this observation are worth reading, including a statement about the woodlouse not having to wear a mask as it breathes out its butt! https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/49547656

07.01.2022 We have a super new partnership to announce today. Earthwatch Australia has joined The ClimateClever Initiative, and we are so excited because they are totally ...on our wavelength when it comes to citizen science and community engagement! If you haven't come across Earthwatch before, they connect people with scientists worldwide, to conduct environmental research and empower them with the knowledge they need to conserve the planet. Since it was founded in 1971, Earthwatch has been taking action to address global change through a time-tested model of citizen science and community engagement. By pairing citizen science volunteers from all sectors of society with researchers around the world, Earthwatch teams have helped to safeguard critical habitats, conserve biodiversity, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources. It's really great to have you onboard Earthwatch, and we're excited about the actions and results that will emerge from this partnership. Stay tuned for details! #earthwatch #climateclever #climateaction

05.01.2022 Today is the first official World Manta Day - a day to celebrate and recognise these amazing marine animals that play such an important role in the ecology of o...ur marine environment. More information on global World Manta Day activities is available at: https://www.worldmantaday.com/ The Coral Bay Research Station has been involved in research on the biology and ecology of manta rays since its establishment; we have supported numerous students, and have been supported by fellow researchers through Project Manta - The manta rays of Australia, citizen scientists (through groups like Earthwatch Australia), businesses (like Ningaloo Marine Interactions, Austral Fisheries) and funding bodies like the Australian Research Council. As mesoscale predators, Coral Bay's manta rays play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of Ningaloo Reef, as well as supporting the Coral Bay ecotourism industry. We have so much left to learn about these amazing animals, and the Coral Bay Research Station remains at the forefront of research and lobbying activity to improve protection for manta rays.

03.01.2022 The TMAG entomology team found one of their target taxa yesterday - a velvet worm! There's so much more than meets the eye with these interesting creatures that... squirt sticky slime to capture prey, which includes termites, woodlice and small spiders. They also do this in self defence so researchers are careful not to prod them at close quarters! Tasmania is a hotspot for velvet worms. This one is an Ooperipatellus species.
