18.01.2022 Today is World Pharmacy Technician Day! Pharmacy technicians assist with the technical aspects of running a pharmacy, such as receiving prescription requests, c...hecking medications, labelling bottles, maintaining patient profiles and operating dispensing systems. Their role frees up pharmacists to focus on clinical work. During COVID our whole team split in two and we had to learn to work differently. We were creating new medication rooms in unbelievable time and sourcing supplies for the rapidly changing hospital environment, as well as adapting the way we provided medications to our patients. - Tania Arnold, Senior Technician Dispensary Coordinator at Hawke’s Bay Hospital Pharmacy. Thank you to New Zealand’s pharmacy technicians for your work on the front lines during the COVID-19 response. #RxTechDay #CPhTStrong

17.01.2022 COVID-19 Update There are five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 to report from managed isolation in New Zealand today and no new confirmed cases in the commun...ity. Two of the returnees are in managed isolation in Auckland; one has already been transferred to Auckland’s quarantine facility and arrangements are in place for the second person to be transferred. The three other returnees are in managed isolation in Rotorua and will also be transferred to Auckland’s quarantine facility. Today’s results were from routine testing around day three for four people and testing around day 12 for the fifth person. Five previously reported cases are now considered to have recovered, leaving our total number of active cases effectively unchanged from yesterday at 41. Of these active cases, 34 are imported cases in MIQ facilities, and seven are community cases. Our total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 1,498, which is the number we report to the World Health Organization. There is no one in hospital with COVID-19 in New Zealand today. Yesterday our laboratories processed 3616 tests, bringing the total number of tests completed to date to 979,985. New requirements for air crew take effect from 11.59pm tonight. Changes to Orders made under the COVID-19 Public Health Response Act 2020 are being made to require: - all New Zealand-based air crew to use PPE on all flights and to isolate with other crew members while on overseas layovers - all overseas-based air crew to wear appropriate PPE while in New Zealand airports and whenever travelling between the airport and their hotel - overseas-based air crew who are laying over in New Zealand to do so in a Government managed isolation facility for as long as they are in the country, to ensure they avoid contact with New Zealanders - New Zealand-based crew returning to New Zealand from high-risk locations overseas to self-isolate for at least 48 hours after they return, and until they are assessed as being low risk of having COVID-19 (including receiving a negative test). The Ministry of Health is aware these measures are already widely used, and this change will make sure that they’re applied consistently. See more

07.01.2022 Changes to Childhood Immunisation Schedule If your child is under 4 years old, and only had one MMR vaccination, they will be recalled earlier than expected, this is due to a change in the National Immunisation Register from the 1st of October 2020. The intention around this is to have all children vaccinated for MMR by 15 months of age. Therefore if you receive a text message regarding this please phone and book an appointment with a Nurse as soon as possible. (034651444) This all helps in the prevention of a Measles outbreak, thanks

06.01.2022 Warmer weather and longer days are coming! We all know our sun safety, but if you’re heading into the garden this spring, there are several simple steps you can... take to minimise your risk of catching legionnaire’s disease from working with soil. This disease can cause shortness of breath, fever and pneumonia and can be fatal. 1. Wear a close-fitting facemask over your nose and mouth we should all have one to stay safe from COVID-19, but it can help keep you from inhaling soil or compost dust, too. 2. Wear gloves and wash your hands after working with soil. 3. Consider dampening soil or compost with water to lessen the aerosol risk. 4. When opening a bag of compost or soil, do so away from your face.

05.01.2022 It's New Zealand Sign Language Week, so it's a timely reminder that if you need to communicate with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, you can try and help... them by writing your message or by lip-reading. If you’re wearing a mask you can remove it, but please maintain a physical distance of 2 metres. Consideration for our disabled community is important as 1 in 4 people identify as disabled in New Zealand. For New Zealand Sign Language Week, Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield has signed a message as part of the New Zealand Sign Language Leaders’ Challenge 2020 organised by Deaf Aotearoa Find out more about New Zealand Sign Language Week at https://nzslweek.org.nz/ #inclusion #NZSLWeek #NZSL #NZSLWeek2020
