25.01.2022 Please support this petition to reconfigure Junction Rd, Morningside when it is resurfaced so that the bikeway is next to the kerb protected from moving traffic. https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petiti//pid/913

25.01.2022 We noticed that the lights on the Norman Creek Bikeway in Stones Corner were being tested yesterday. Did anyone happen to go that way last night to check if they are now fully operating??

24.01.2022 Finally!! The banana bars either side of the Norman Creek Bikeway crossing at Main Ave Coorparoo/Stones Corner have been removed! This was top of a list of "little things" we were asked to submit to Council for quick action 5 years ago! (The other issues we submitted remain outstanding ) The position of the banana bars on a corner of the path and very close to the road created a dangerous pinch-point, as they made it difficult for people to cross the busy road with a bike and get clear of the roadway ahead of fast moving traffic - especially if there were pedestrians or cyclists are also trying to cross from the opposite direction

24.01.2022 Consultation is now open on the reference design for the CBD to Kangaroo Point Bridge. You can have your say online and/or by attending one of the information sessions listed below. We're excited that serious planning for this bridge is finally under way! It will cut up to 3km off a trip from the eastern suburbs to the CBD, Botanical Gardens and QUT. Of particular interest to us are the connections at the eastern end. We suggest including in your feedback:... The underpass shouldn’t wait until the bridge is completed; it's badly needed now!! Similarly the crossing over Main St. Stairs and a lift up from CT White Park sound good, but we’d also like to see a rideable ramp. The terrain doesn’t appear too steep to support this after all, people already ride up to the top of Thornton St which is steeper. Council needs to urgently improve Deakin St, and the connection to Shafston Ave. Again, this shouldn’t wait for the bridge. It’s particularly urgent with plans now approved for a supermarket at the corner with Ferry St. More info: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//kangaroo-point-green-brid Information sessions: Thursday 3 September 11am-2pm Queen Street Mall (Wintergarden entrance), Queen Street, Brisbane City Saturday 5 September 9am-12pm Captain Burke Park, 117 Holman Street, Kangaroo Point Wednesday 9 September 4-7pm Queensland Multicultural Centre, Main Street, Kangaroo Point Sunday 13 September 8am-3pm Riverside Markets, City Botanic Gardens, corner of Alice and Albert streets, Brisbane City

24.01.2022 600 today. Imagine if we had a bikeway to the eastern suburbs which wasn't terrible.

24.01.2022 This new (replacement) section of path along Wynnum Rd behind the new indented bus stop at Norman Ave is 2.5m wide. Which is at least slightly better than the 2m path either side. 2.5m is the minimum distance for a shared path under AustRoads standards, and only suitable for a "local access" path where cyclist volumes and operational speeds will remain low. None of those conditions apply to Wynnum Rd which is the principal cycle route to the eastern suburbs. The Wynnum Rd Corridor "upgrade" project stages 1 and 1B have cost a total of $130million. While it did add a few hundred metres of separated cycling infrastructure, and finally saw the footpath across Canning Bridge resurfaced (after years of lobbying), the lack of any other improvements for active transport are incredibly disappointing.

23.01.2022 The cover has finally come off the counter on Lytton Rd, but the display is not operating yet.

23.01.2022 Yesterday, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner made much about the completion of the $650million Kingsford Smith Drive project. But a similar milestone passed unremarked on Wynnum Rd recently, with work on Stage 1B finally wrapped up, and the roadwork sign removed from the footpath/bikeway. What's frustrating after all the months of disruption on the shared path is that the replacement section just east (up hill) from Norman Ave is only 2.5m wide - not the 3.0m minimum for a shared path on a major route like this. There is room to provide a 3m path in this section, but it seems Council were too mean. Then just a little further along, Council has laid new turf, but not touched the footpath. This is supposed to be a primary cycle route, and it's less than 1.8m wide.

23.01.2022 Lytton Rd though Morningside is a disaster is so many ways - not least because it's supposed to be a principal cycle route, but sections of it are incredibly hostile to cycling. Please sign the petition asking Council to upgrade this corridor between Bulimba and Murarrie, making it safe for all road users. https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petiti//pid/990

23.01.2022 We're happy to report that the new section of concrete shared path along Wynnum Road near the Norman Park ferry terminal is 3.0m wide, rather than the totally unsatisfactory 2.5m section just beyond, or the 2.0m wide section leading on to Canning Bridge. AustRoads standards recommend that a major cycle route like this be separated from pedestrian traffic completely, but unfortunately no-one in Council seems interested. On the brighter side, at 3.0m, there will at least be room for overtaking when someone is approaching in the opposite direction.

22.01.2022 Yesterday's BCC Public and Active Transport Committee Meeting was unusual; normally Space4cyclingbne and The Translink Ripoff are the only observers aside from media and council officers, but this week we were joined by a large contingent of residents from Norman Park who were keen to hear how Council would respond to their petition to reinstate the cross-river ferry. These people feel abandoned by Council's sudden decision to withdraw the wooden ferry vessels in the name of ...safety, and then use that as the reason to cancel the cross-river service to Norman Park and close the terminal permanently. To add insult, it comes after massive disruptions during the road widening project which made reaching the terminal quite difficult. Council cited a decline in ferry patronage during that time as one of the reasons for pulling the service. Soon the closest alternative ferry terminal at Mowbray Park will need to be closed for approximately 9 months for refurbishment, as will the Dockside terminal. Thornton St has also been closed. The relevance to cycling of course is that the cross-river ferries provide an option for people wanting to reach a destination across the river who are not prepared to ride the long distances on steep shabby paths and dangerous roads to reach another ferry terminal or one of the distant bridges. Council's new green bridge program has completely ignored the eastern suburbs. One of the reasons cited for the service cancellation was low patronage; at an average of 133 passengers per day, Council doesn't believe this justifies the cost of running ferries from Norman Park, and certainly not the cost to upgrade the terminal to comply with disability access standards. It's interesting to consider that decision in light of the enthusiasm from all levels of government to build car parking. For example, at Murarrie Station recently, each additional new car parking space cost around $60,000 which the state government promoted as a good investment to keep one car off the road between there and the CBD. If Council or the State Government were prepared to invest an equivalent amount for everyone taking the cross-river ferry instead of driving, that would more than pay for the ferry terminal upgrade. Recommendations of the Public and Active Transport Committee will be taken to Council's main meeting next week for a vote, but that's effectively a rubber stamp. The decision has already been made by the Council administration; their strategy to 'activate' the river includes building 'River Hubs' (which amount to sparsely used fishing pontoons), and further subsidising the commercial operators of Howard Smith Wharves (where Council will pay half the cost of building a new terminal), but not providing public transport services and active transport connections for residents.

22.01.2022 We can't leave the Lytton area without a special shout-out to the Moreton Bay Cycleway along Pritchard St, which deserves some sort of prize for the most poorly coordinated bikeway project. Not only did it involve ripping up and replacing the newly installed kerbing, footpath and lights along Pritchard St, but the final result doesn't include a crossing at the rail line, forcing people cycling west to cross the busy road twice. Needless to say, almost no-one does. We're torn... between wanting to see a rail crossing here, and the sinking knowledge that Queensland Rail will insist on a squeeze point with signs instructing cyclists to dismount. (How do other states seem to manage rail crossings for pedestrians and cyclists which aren't so hostile, but we can't here?). The Pritchard St bikeway (shared path) also doesn't connect to the Peter Frawley Cycleway along the latest stage of the Port of Brisbane Motorway - which in turn really doesn't connect to anything much at all. So close, and yet, so far...

22.01.2022 It was great to get along to the opening of Stage E of the Veloway on Tuesday morning. It's a fantastic piece of infrastructure, which lifts riders up and over a couple of nasty intersections. We've already heard of people buying bikes and e-bikes because cycle-commuting is now a really attractive option for them. Thanks to Joe Kelly MP for leading a community ride from Greenslopes to check it out. Also well done to Corrine McMillan MP - State Member for Mansfield who cycled in from her home in Rochedale with Transport Minister Mark Bailey MP - Labor for Miller for the opening. It's great to have representatives in Parliament who appreciate the value of active transport.

21.01.2022 Reminder: there is another community information session about the Kangaroo Point to CBD Green Bridge this afternoon: Wednesday 9 Sep 4-7pm at Queensland Multicultural Centre, Main Street, Kangaroo Point Also Thurs 3 Sep 11am-2pm in Queen Street Mall (Wintergarden entrance), Queen Street, Brisbane City... Sunday 13 Sep 2020 8am-3pm at Riverside Markets, City Botanic Gardens, corner of Alice and Albert streets, Brisbane City You can also have your say online: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//kangaroo-point-green-brid

20.01.2022 Space4cyclingbne invite you to join us on Saturday 11 July for a bicycle ride along the route Carolyn Lister used to take to her workplace at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. We’ll start at 10am from Frances Ave, Wooloowin in front of Carolyn and John’s home, and finish in beautiful Bowen Park, just across the road from Carolyn’s destination last Tuesday morning when her life was tragically cut short. We will celebrate Carolyn’s spirit and call on the Queensland Gover...nment and Brisbane City Council to do more to ensure people can enjoy cycling safety to work, school, errands, social events and as visitors to Brisbane. (For anyone from the south-side who is not keen on riding across town to the start point, the closest train station is Eagle Junction. Or you can join from Wooloowin at 10:15. This is a good chance to check out the North Brisbane Bikeway).

20.01.2022 A small win: the sign with its low-visibility grey pole in the middle of the path beside Jack Flynn Memorial Drive has been replaced! (This possibly only happened because the old sign was very faded; the person we spoke to at the call centre said "people should not be riding bikes or scooters on the footpath", but was eventually persuaded to log the issue report.)

20.01.2022 Woohoo. As reported by John this morning, the banana bars on the path leading to the rail underpass from Morley St, Coorparoo are gone. As are the set just to the north. Good riddance!

20.01.2022 We never did manage to get a flood level indicator installed at the Morley St underpass. Time to remind Council again...

20.01.2022 Bridge information sessions start this week: get along to push for the connections to be fast-tracked.

19.01.2022 The Many Rd upgrade project at Wakerley is restarting this week. It will continue the 2.5m off-road shared path to Bulimba Creek (just before New Cleveland Rd), as well as adding a 1.8m on-road bike lane. The work also involves relocating a water main and bus stop. It will take up to 5 months.

19.01.2022 This is frightening. Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) are about to start work "upgrading" the Gateway Motorway on-ramp from Old Cleveland Rd. The $5million project will remove what limited provision currently exists for people cycling west on Old Cleveland Rd, and leave them totally exposed as TWO lanes of 80kph traffic turn across/through them. Should you decide to bail (or get forced) off to the left, you will then face 3 more ugly intersections with turn...ing conflicts to get back onto Old Cleveland Rd. The plan for a "bike lane along Old Cleveland Rd" for a few hundred metres before it disappears in the middle of an intersection would be laughable if it wasn't so scary. The State Government's Cycling Infrastructure Policy says "Explicit provisions are required as part of projects on Principal Cycle Network (PCNP) routes and are typically high quality solutions." Old Cleveland Road is a PCNP route, and is the primary link to Brisbane from the suburbs of Belmont, Chandler, Capalaba and the rest of the Redlands. Far from providing high standard facilities for cycling, this project will make it deadly. Project page: https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au//old-cleveland-road-and-gateway TMR Cycling Policy (for what its worth): https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-and-tran/Cycling/Cyclists

18.01.2022 Yay! The banana bars have finally been replaced with bollards along Lerna St and at the entrance to Woolloongabba Rotary Park.

18.01.2022 Good news from Rochedale, with Council last week approving a request from Councillor Steven Huang for a new concrete footpath on Miles Platting Road between the Bulimba Creek bridge and the Gateway Motorway connecting Rochedale and Eight Mile Plains. That follows a meeting onsite earlier this year as part of the Space4cyclingbne campaign. There's still plenty to do to connect the growing suburb of Rochedale, but this is an obvious and important link to the Eight Mile Plains Bus Station (soon to be Metro Station), Bulimba Creek Bikeway, and V1 Veloway. https://www.facebook.com/1653312801581530/posts/2534887893424012/

17.01.2022 Construction work is about to begin to make Cannon Hill Station fully accessible. We’re happy to see that it will include a secure bike parking cage and (it appears) casual bike parking on the northern side of the station, near the entrance from Barrack Rd. Hopefully (although it’s not shown in the artist’s impression) the casual bike parking rack on the southern side will remain we had to campaign for years to get that! We've also asked if the project will include any impr...ovements for pedestrians and cyclists at the level crossing at Barrack Rd, but don't yet have an answer on that. We’re disappointed we still haven’t been able to persuade Council and/or the State Government to construct a cycle and walking connection to the station from the south west (why is adding more car parking a higher priority than making it easier for people to walk and ride??), but we’ll keep working on that. Station accessibility upgrade information: https://www.queenslandrail.com.au//Cannon-Hill-station-upg

17.01.2022 Now would be a good time to start on the extension of the Gabba Bikeway for the next block east along Stanley St (but shared for the moment with pedestrians while the footpath is closed). Just needs a second row of those barriers...

17.01.2022 Lovely day for a bike ride! Belinda caught up with Lisa O'Donnell - Labor for Chatsworth this morning for a ride to check out some of great parts and "could be improved" parts of the Chatsworth electorate.

16.01.2022 The Department of Transport and Main Roads have released plans for Stage 1 of the "Eastern Transitway" along Old Cleveland Road. Stage 1 covers the section between Narracot St and Carindale Street, including the intersection with Creek Rd. The project is essentially about improving bus reliability by creating dedicated lanes so that buses aren't stuck in general traffic. The downside for road-cyclists is that where there are currently luxuriously wide shoulders on Old Clevela...nd Rd between Narracott St and Creek Rd (in both directions), those will become bus lanes. Cyclists are permitted to ride in bus lanes, but some people will certainly find that less comfortable. The current narrow footpaths will be upgraded to shared paths, and there will be ramps to allow cyclists to transition between the road and the path if that feels more comfortable. A new shared path on the southern side of Old Cleveland Rd will help with crossing the lanes in and out of Carindale St, and there will finally be a connection between the Bulimba Creek Bikeway and Old Cleveland Rd inbound. At the Creek Rd intersection, the 4 slip lanes will all get signalised pedestrian crossings, and it appears the Creek Rd crossings will be streamlined. However there still won't be a direct pedestrian crossing over Old Cleveland Rd on the western side of the intersection. What do you think of the changes? You can take a look at the plans in more detail at https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/EasternTransitway and have your say via the survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FQ8NSDT

16.01.2022 We asked the contractor responsible for the Queensland Urban Utilities sewer works in Hawthorne Park if they could create a temporary path so the detour route wasn't a choice of walking/wheeling across the grass (now through the mud) or making two 90 degree turns and conflicting with people entering or stepping out of a toilet cubicle! It's pretty disappointing to see that one small concession wasn't provided. These works are expected to be going on until the end of the year.

16.01.2022 We're happy to discover that more banana bars have been removed from paths around Norman Park - including at Rome St, Scott St, and Canara St. Even more exciting, it looks like the banana bars where the Norman Creek Bikeway crosses Main Ave, Coorparoo are going too. Their position on the curve makes them really awkward and unsafe, and we've been asking for their removal for years!

16.01.2022 We just received notification that the project to "upgrade" the intersection of Main St and River Terrace in Kangaroo Point is now complete. This is surprising, as there still appeared to be a lot of work left to finish the shared path along Main St yesterday. We were pleased to note that the path on the triangular island has been widened - to what we assume is 2m from the totally unsuitable 1.2m originally installed. But the bike/scoot/walk route along Main St - which is sup...posed to be the Principal Cycle Route - is still very disappointing. Heading south on Main St, the 2.5m shared path (still under construction yesterday) effectively runs out at the crossing, with narrow kerb ramps, and the beg-button on the right-hand side out of arms reach if you line up with the ramp. The path across the island is less than the 2.5m minimum for a shared path, and there is another beg-button (again on the right hand side) to complete the crossing. See more

16.01.2022 At Council's "Your City Your Say" Forum on Wednesday evening, some more information was made available about plans for the Minnippi Bikeway. This follows the recent announcement by Cr Lisa Atwood and Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta MP. It appears the new bikeway will roughly follow the existing track around the edge of the Cannon Hill Bushland Reservebehind the service station, Monte Carlo Caravan Park, Aldi and Bunnings. This makes sense to avoid disturbing establishe...d vegetation, and also because a path there is on higher ground than closer to Minnippi Creek. It's not clear if there will be entrances to the shopping centre; in some places there is a significant height difference, but behind Aldi the path would be approximately level with the car park. Belinda asked about the possibility of a new bridge over Bulimba Creek, but was told the existing onewhich is attached to the Richmond Bridge at Wynnum Rdis perfectly adequate. In reality it's narrow and not in top condition. On Brisbane's north side, a dozen or more bridges in a similar or better state have been replaced in recent years, so hopefully this one will get some love soon. Once completed, the new bikeway will give residents who live west of Creek Road a way to access Minnippi Parklands without having to take the car in order to avoid riding on major roads. Future stages will connect to Minnippi Bvd, and then from Windrush St to Fursden Rd and complete a loop back to Bulimba Creek Bikeway in Minnippi Parklands.

16.01.2022 Happy Birthday to the Gateway Bridge Bikeway. Joining* us to the northside bikeways for 10 years! (*Almost joining...)

16.01.2022 New warehouses have sprung up along Export St, Lytton which will be the site of the recently announced Amazon fulfilment centre. It's good to see that these facilities have bike racks at the entrances for staff who ride to work. However it's a pity that safe infrastructure wasn't incorporated when the roads around the area were developed. That would enable people to cycle from home or one of the nearby train stations at (Lindum, Wynnum and Wynnum North) without having to contend with the heavy vehicle traffic. As you would expect for a warehousing and freight distribution centre, there are a huge number of truck movements in the area.

15.01.2022 Belinda and Rolf Kuelsen - The Greens took a spin around the Bulimba electorate yesterday, looking at ways to improve integration of public and active transport. Providing car parking at stations (or on surrounding streets) is expensive, and creates local congestion. Better walking and cycling connections mean more people can leave the car at home and enjoy their local neighbourhood.

15.01.2022 [Somewhat] Good news regarding Rickertt Rd, Ransome.

14.01.2022 This is great to see! Now let's make sure our kids have safe routes to school so they can build healthy habits and continue when they head to high school as well!

14.01.2022 Some local kids recently petitioned Council to build more bike trails in the East Brisbane and Coorparoo areas, including a dirt jump track near Coorparoo Skate Park. If Council won't build it, they asked to at least be allowed to build their own. Council responded: "This request for BMX facilities within The Common Park will be considered as part of either capital upgrade or the Coorparoo Ward Suburban Enhancement Fund, subject to consultation with local residents and enviro...nment groups, noting the site’s proximity to Norman Creek. In the meantime, Goodwin Park, Yeronga, and Muriel Avenue Park, Moorooka, both have BMX facilities available, and both are less than 10 kilometres from The Common Park. In late 2019, Council opened a new BMX facility at D.M. Henderson Park in MacGregor and there are plans for a BMX track at Murarrie Recreation Reserve." Imagine being a kid asking for somewhere to build some dirt jumps to have fun on your bike, and reading that. The facilities at Yeronga and Morooka are totally inaccessible from East Brisbane and Coorparoo other than by car, whereas at least the track at MacGregor can be reached without having to ride much on the road - but it's 14kms away. This afternoon, kids were queuing up to have their turn there. There are many more BMX and pump tracks on the north side, but we know there's still demand for more. Do you think Council are over-thinking their "Brisbane Off-Road Cycling project" - which as far as we know hasn't yet delivered anything in the eastern suburbs?? We absolutely don't condone people building off-road cycling trails in bushland reserves, but we do think Council could do a much better job of providing local facilities which people of all ages will use and enjoy. We'd be very curious to see a comparison of usage per dollar spent on Council's "river access hubs" versus the few off-road bike tracks around. Petition (including response): https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petiti//pid/804 Brisbane Off-Road Cycling project - commenced in December 2018 https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//brisbane-off-road-cycling River Access Network, for comparison: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//pu/river-access-networkre

14.01.2022 The magpies have launched their Spring offensive. There have been a couple of reports of an angry bird patrolling Wynnum Rd between Creek Rd and Murarrie Recreation Ground, so please take care if you're cycling in that area.

12.01.2022 Kudos to anyone who commutes along Old Cleveland Rd - it's seriously hostile. Photos were taken yesterday by riding a mountain bike and bumping through the grass and gravel. Even that was intimidating. What a horror show. Principal Cycle route.

12.01.2022 The sun is coming back, and things are starting to dry out ahead of Bicycle Queensland's Bike With Brisbane event tomorrow. EaST BUG will be leading a ride heading in to King George Square from the Norman Park Bowls Club (43 Norman Avenue, Norman Park), leaving at 6:30am. We'll roll by Mowbray Park (crossing Lytton Rd from Heath St) about 10 minutes later if you want to join from there. Please register online to help us know who to expect: https://bq.org.au/bike-with-brisban...e-guided-commutes/ (Note that we'll be taking a slightly different route to the one mapped on the website. We need to get to King George Square before all those Brisbane West BUG and Brisbane North BUG people eat all the breakfast!)

12.01.2022 Morningside and Seven Hills residents are asking for a pedestrian crossing on Waminda St, near Moolabar St, where the current refuge is quite inadequate. At peak times, Waminda St gets very congested, while at other times, it's a high-speed road - including plenty of heavy vehicle traffic. Crossing is really difficult. We'd like to see a more complete solution, with a proper protected roundabout (giving safety and priority to pedestrians and cyclists) at the intersection of Waminda St, Bennetts Rd and Agnew St. But in the meantime, we support this petition. An improved solution is urgently needed here! https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petiti//pid/973

12.01.2022 There was a counter on the Moreton Bay Cycleway at Wynnum yesterday - on the corner of Pritchard St and Wynnum North Road. Could there be plans afoot to complete the cycleway around to the Gateway Bridge?? The original plans for the Port of Brisbane Motorway that were circulated back in 2007 showed a bikeway, but it was never built. The confusing side-ways map shows a cycleway along Lytton Road, which could hardly be further from the truth.

11.01.2022 Oh look - a bridge. Maybe we should crowd-fund this for a walking and cycling bridge across Perrin Creek at Morningside - either adjacent to the bridge on Lytton Rd, or to link up Beelarong St behind the tennis centre? Council doesn't seem interested in creating active transport connections in our area.

11.01.2022 #FreshKermit on Queensport Road, Murarrie.

10.01.2022 Yikes. All cross-river ferry services and City Hoppers are cancelled from midnight tonight (24 July) until further notice. The Bulimba Ferry is usually busy with families on bikes on the weekends. It can be a long wait between CityCat services and a problem if the boat which arrives already has a maximum number of bikes on board. (That number depends on the vessel). For the Norman Park Ferry the situation is even worse, since CityCats don't stop there. Your best option is pro...bably to bump through the construction mess along Wynnum Road to get around to the Mowbray Park terminal and wait for a CityCat there. There's no information at this stage about the reason for these ferry cancellations. At times like this - and almost any other time you need to get across the river - a green bridge (or tunnel) would be nice!!

10.01.2022 Today Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced plans to fast-track the CBD to Kangaroo Point active transport bridge, for completion in 2023. This is great news, as this new bridge will cut almost 3km from some trips from the eastern suburbs to QUT, the Botanic Gardens, and the CBD. We're happy to see that the reference design shows separated space for people walking and people cycling/scooting, and also indicates shade cover for the walkway and plans to preserve the lovely tree at the Scott St landing. This is all really positive. We hope Council will also work on improving the connections across the Kangaroo Point peninsula to maximise value from this bridge. https://youtu.be/_VFUI1cPR6E

10.01.2022 Also scheduled for this week - but we're not sure how it's going with the weather - Council are widening the short strip of pathway along Whites Rd, Lota just north of the boardwalk. This is part for the Moreton Bay Cycleway, but has always been a pinch point. Sadly, still no news on upgrading the boardwalk and causeway. We understand that is an ongoing source of frustration given how regularly the path floods, but we have not been able to generate interest at any level of government.

10.01.2022 Member for Bulimba Di Farmer MP and Councillor Kara Cook - Morningside Ward know to expect a visit from the Cycling Inquisition Thanks for the chat at yesterday's community BBQ. We're very happy to hear that Di has secured funding for an accessibility upgrade to Morningside Station - including a secure bike parking cage (yay, finally!). But it's not just the station itself - we had a good discussion about the difficulties in getting there, especially from the other side of... Wynnum Road. The nearest signalised pedestrian crossings involve long detours, waiting through multiple cycles, and crossing dangerous high-speed slip lanes anyway. Not surprisingly, a lot of people take their chances dashing across to the centre island and waiting there for a break in traffic. We need to do better than this to support people using public and active transport. Building each car parking space at a park and ride facility costs around $60,000 (not including land value); what if we invested the equivalent for every person who *doesn't* arrive at the station by car?

10.01.2022 Junction Rd in Morningside is on Council's list for resurfacing this year. We think that offers a perfect opportunity to create separated bikeways by moving the parking away from the kerb - something that's fairly standard in other cities, including examples in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Junction Rd is wide, but people still ride on the skinny footpaths because they don't feel comfortable next to the trucks.

10.01.2022 It's great to see the footpath has now been completed all the way along the eastern side of Stanbrough Rd through Belmont and Gumdale. Thanks Cr Ryan Murphy and Brisbane City Council. At the southern end, it doesn't yet link to anything, as there's no footpath on Old Cleveland Rd - although it does have decent "shoulder" bike lanes. Hopefully a path connecting to the bus stop at "Belmont Shooting Complex" is next, and a safer way to cross the road. (Note that Old Cleveland Rd east from the Gateway Motorway is the responsibility of State Government rather than Council).

10.01.2022 It's good to see both our east-side federal MPs Terri Butler MP and Ross Vasta MP have joined the Parliamentary Friends of Cycling group established by We Ride Australia. We need support for cycling at a federal levelfor city-wide, city shaping infrastructure. Investing in cycling is not just about transport, it's an investment in health, mental health, healthy aging, education, families, environment, jobs, and the economy!! Announcement from We Ride: https://www.weride.org.au//bicycles-ride-the-wave-into-pa/

08.01.2022 These carparking spaces at Murarrie Station cost approximately $65,000 each to build, but we were unable to get a bike rack on this side of the tracks - or a secure bike parking enclosure here at all.

08.01.2022 Good news from Jonathan Sri, Councillor for The Gabba this morning on Stanley St. Thanks to pressure from his office (and from us) the footpath opposite the Gabba Stadium is now open again, and Council are drafting firmer criteria about when footpaths can be closed for construction work. We shouldn't have to make a fuss to prevent footpaths from being blocked!!

07.01.2022 In the UK, Cambridge will be getting the first Dutch-style roundabout. This design encourages active transport and makes the intersection safer for everyone by slowing motor vehicles, and giving priority to people walking and cycling. We've already seen a similar design used successfully in Melbourne, and would love to see Brisbane City Council adopt similar measures - staring with some of the quite hostile suburban roundabouts here in the eastern suburbs: Pashen St / Thynne ...Rd / Burrai St, Morningside Waminda St / Bennetts Rd / Agnew St, Morningside Oxford St / Apollo Rd / Hawthorne Rd / Riding Rd, Bulimba Bennetts Rd / Milsom St / Mcilwraith St, Norman Park Ferguson Rd / Wiles St / Stanley Rd, Camp Hill Oateson Skyline Dr / Ferguson Rd, Camp Hill Tingal Rd / Pritchard St / Wynnum N Rd, Wynnum Tingal Rd / Glenora St, Wynnum Sandy Camp Rd / Wynnum N Rd / Selina St, Wynnum Wynnum Rd / Wynnum N Rd / Moreton Ave, Wynnum Wondall Rd / Preston Rd / Worthing St / West Ave, Wynnum Which is your top pick for an upgrade?

07.01.2022 Can confirm that in the interminable time it takes to cross Lytton Rd at Heath St it is possible to get yourself and your possessions thoroughly soaked. Council spent $130 million to save a few seconds for people in cars, but doesn't consider your time valuable if you're walking, cycling, or trying to reach public transport.

07.01.2022 Yikes. There's evidence of a high speed crash on Lytton Rd outbound just before Canning Bridge some time in the last 24hours. Does anyone know more? If anyone was on the footpath at the time that would not have ended well!!

06.01.2022 Brisbane Canvas. New public art being painted in Morningside today: "Take me away." "Bring me home." Edgy. You know what else we think would be great? A footpath on Jack Flynn Memorial Drive; crossing points to make it easier to access the station; and safe bike lanes on these principal cycle routes.

05.01.2022 The 2m clear bike lane is now complete down the eastern side of Queensport Road, Murrarie with no-stopping lines except at the bus stops. No more having to merge out into traffic to get around parked vehicles woohoo! (Looks like the stencil team is yet to come though). Thanks to Cr Lisa Atwood for following this up. On the western side, the bike lane has actually been moved closer to the parked cars which is not ideal, but there is a low parking turn-over here, and you are ...unlikely to be travelling very fast up the hill in case someone does start opening their door. Someone has even thoughtfully put out a couch in case you need a rest on the climb. We’d still like to see if the old rail line to Gibson Island could be turned into a gentler path to the Gateway Bridge, but in the meantime these safety improvements on Queensport Rd are very welcome.

05.01.2022 Bikeway through Woolloongabba Rotary Park to Norman Creek is under there somewhere... Stay safe everyone.

05.01.2022 Norman Creek Bikeway earlier this evening. Wow.

05.01.2022 Beware if you're cycling on Wynnum Rd (including on the footpath) through Cannon Hill and Murarrie: there are two quite aggressive and persistent birds - one on patrol near Red Rooster (ironically?) in Cannon Hill, and another just west of the Gateway Motorway. These are hectic traffic areas, so be careful to maintain your balance when under aerial bombardment. There have been numerous reports about these birds on Magpie Alert - from people cycling in both directions. You can sign up to receive notifications of reports in your area: https://www.magpiealert.com/ Don't forget your sunnies!

04.01.2022 Progress on lighting the Norman Creek Bikeway in Stones Corner

04.01.2022 Lime scooters are back, with a new model which has a wider base and larger wheels. We understand the coverage area is now wider, with a focus on "last mile" connections to public transport in suburban areas. We think that makes a lot of sense to help alleviate issues with parking on streets around the ferry terminals, but it might show up some of the deficiencies in our local footpaths. (And yes, unfortunately not everyone is very considerate with how they park these things. ...Do you think designated parking areas would help?) What do you think about e-scooters? Please consider completing this survey to help out a PhD Candidate at the University of Adelaide who is researching uses and attitudes towards shared bike and e-scooter schemes in Australia. Part of their data collection involves a survey asking about travel behaviours, use/non-use of shared bikes and e-scooters, and attitudes towards their place in Australian cities. Completing the survey is completely voluntary and anonymous and will help inform the understanding and future directions of active travel in Australia. https://arcg.is/fCezT University of Adelaide HREC Approval No. H-2019-201

03.01.2022 We think a tunnel should be seriously considered for a cycling (and walking) link across the river from Bulimba to Teneriffe. Check out the video of the Maastunnel in Rotterdam, which was first built in 1942, but has recently been refurbished. https://twitter.com/i/status/1289556007815802880 For those who like technical info: https://tunneltalk.com/Netherlands-19Mar13-Rotterdam-Maastu

03.01.2022 A detailed look at the plans for Stage 1 of the Eastern Transitway which are open for public comment until midnight on July 12. We’re happy the project will include 3.0m wide shared paths on both sides of Old Cleveland Rd between Narracott St and Creek Rd, but have concerns about the safety and priority of cyclists at the intersections and at the edges of the project. We’ve identified 14 points where we think the plans could be improved, and will include these in our submission. If you ride this way, or live or work in the area, we’re keen to hear what you think.

03.01.2022 Today we received notification that the main works on the Wynnum Road Corridor "Upgrade" Stage 1B are complete, apart from minor landscape works and defect rectifications. We contend that the bikeway (shared footpath) is full of defects that need rectifying, but unfortunately, any improvements for people walking and cycling were out of scope.

03.01.2022 Plenty of opportunity for combining public and active transport in Morningside. You can walk to the bus stop and pedal while you wait...

03.01.2022 No amount of education and awareness is going make this intersection safe in its current state. Earlier this week, Mitch from Airport BUG attended a stakeholder working group convened by Brisbane City Council to help scope their Safe Travel Together project. The project aims to deliver an education and awareness campaign to address challenges faced by heavy vehicle drivers and people who ride bicycles when sharing Brisbane’s roads. Mitch pointed out that Safe System principle...s (which have been adopted in Australia as part of the National Road Safety Strategy) say While individual road users are expected to be responsible for complying with traffic laws and behaving in a safe manner, it can no longer be assumed that the burden of road safety responsibility simply rests with the individual road user. Many organisationsthe ‘system managers’have a primary responsibility to provide a safe operating environment for road users. https://www.roadsafety.gov.au/nrss/safe-system What sort of education and awareness do you think would be suitable to prepare your kids to ride to the park, pool, or local shops in an operating environment like this?

03.01.2022 Lytton Rd, Murarrie. Most of the roads in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane are the responsibility of Council. But Lytton Rd east from the Gateway Motorway is one of the few exceptionsit's a Queensland Government asset. People want to walk and ride this wayin fact they rely on it to get to work. But currently their choice is between the dirt (mud?) shoulder, or mixing with trucks on the road.

03.01.2022 Oh look, some new markings on chasms in the Bulimba Creek Bikeway at Minnippi. Hopefully that means repairs are about to finally begin. What's a little frustrating is that the worst cracking appears to be in the newer, wider (3m) sections, rather than the older stretches. Perhaps these pieces weren't laid correctly in the first place?

02.01.2022 Exciting news from Councillor Fiona Cunningham's office: Work is about to start on the Hanlon Park rejuvenation project! It will begin at the Cornwall Street end and progress through the park, towards O’Keefe Street in key stages: Stage 1A and 1B: from mid-September to early-mid 2021 Stage 2A and 2B and 3A and 3B from early-mid 2021 to late 2021. Of course this will have a big impact on the popular Norman Creek bikeway, so please lookout for signage and traffic control.... And the bit we've been impatiently waiting for: Council will be constructing an underpass at Logan Road in Stones Corner as part of this project similar to the access under Cornwall, Juliette and Ridge streets. "This will provide alternative access under Logan Road to link with Gladys Street. Due to the tidal nature of Norman Creek in Stones Corner, it will not be feasible to make this an all-weather access." For more, see Council's project page: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//stones-corner-precinct-ha

01.01.2022 This is also very positive news. In Council today, one of the issues being discussed is a subdivision of land to enable delivery of the Wakerley Bikeway. From the papers: "The Wakerley Bikeway project will improve safety and access for cyclists and pedestrians along Rickertt Road, Ransome. The project will involve: - installing a new shared path between Green Camp Road and Chelsea Road along the northern alignment of Rickertt Road - installing a bikeway crossing upgrade at Ch...elsea Road - installing a new bridge decking structure over Lota Creek." We have no further details just yet, and are not aware that budget has been allocated for the project, but this could be very good news for people cycling and walking on the eastern edge of Brisbane.

01.01.2022 We recently received notice from Brisbane City Council that the works to upgrade Manly Rd, between New Cleveland Rd and Wondall Rd in Tingalpa will now be done in 2 stages. The first stage - including an on-road bike lane and 330m of new shared path on the southern side, west of the sports park has been completed and looks good. Work on the remaining 170m section to New Cleveland Rd will start again in early 2021. (Of course what we really want is the section between New Cleveland Rd and Belmont Rd on both sides - it’s currently terrible!)

01.01.2022 In the western suburbs, Cr Steve Toomey recently posted that the path by Enoggera Creek near St Johns Wood Scouts in Ashgrove is being widened to 3m. Why can't we get proper repairs to the Bulimba Creek Bikeway through Minnippi Parklands Cr Lisa Atwood, instead of just dribbles of asphalt and sand in the cracks?
