24.01.2022 P2 mask update While our advice to the community remains that the best way to avoid exposure to the smoke is by staying indoors (with windows and doors closed)... we understand that many people in our community also have a preference to use P2 masks. Information on P2 and N95 masks, and how to fit them properly is available from ACT Health at: https://www.health.act.gov.au//heavy-smoke-and-extreme-hea The ACT Government has been able to confirm the arrival of new stocks of P2 masks into Canberra retail markets which will be available through chemists and hardware stores later today or tomorrow. It is a good idea to call ahead to providers to check stock. The ACT government has also accepted an offer from the Commonwealth of a stock of P2 masks which will be made available for vulnerable people as air quality conditions require.More information will come on how the masks will be made available as soon as possible. These are likely to be made available for people who are particularly sensitive to smoky conditions and those who are unable to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.

23.01.2022 Staff at our Respiratory Assessment Clinics at Weston Creek Walk-in Centre and Canberra Hospital are working hard to assess and, where appropriate, test people ...for COVID-19. More than 1000 people have been tested, with most people found to have the common cold. Many more people have presented for testing without having met the testing criteria this puts an unnecessary strain on our service. If you do not meet the testing criteria, you will NOT be tested. You should be tested for COVID-19 if: you’ve travelled overseas recently, and you develop symptoms of COVID-19 (such as fever, cough, sore throat, headaches, difficulty breathing) within 14 days of leaving an overseas country you have been identified as a contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19 and you develop symptoms (such as fever, cough, sore throat, headaches, difficulty breathing) of the disease you are a health care worker with direct patient contact, and have fever AND acute respiratory symptoms (e.g. shortness of breath, cough, sore throat), even if you have not recently travelled or had contact with someone who has COVID-19 Disappointingly, some members of the community have been quite aggressive towards our nursing staff. Our hard-working staff are members of the community they are your neighbours, friends, relatives. Please respect our health care workers and be patient. For more information on COVID-19 visit www.health.act.gov.au/novelcoronavirus

20.01.2022 **UPDATE ON AIR QUALITY: Read more here http://bit.ly/airqualityupdateACT (Friday 3 January 2020)** ACT HEALTH ALERT: Air quality deterioration across the ACT f...rom smoke (Wednesday 1 January 2020) The ACT Health Directorate has today upgraded our health advice to the community due to the deterioration of air quality from the heavy smoke. The smog, which is impacting the ACT from fires across the border, is extremely thick and expected to linger in the coming days. Conditions may also be intensified by the hot temperatures forecast. During these periods of heavy smoke, all Canberrans are advised to avoid physical activity outside. We also strongly advise people who are sensitive to smoke, especially those with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, to take extra care. This includes remaining indoors where possible, with windows and doors closed, and not using evaporative air conditioners which draw air into the house from outside. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should take their medication as prescribed by their doctor. People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan. People who are more vulnerable to smoke and air pollution include: - people with heart or lung conditions (including asthma) - children aged less than 14 years - pregnant women, and - people over 65 years of age. People who are sensitive to smoke and air pollution can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness as well, so staying hydrated and cool is important. Anyone with concerns about their health should seek medical advice from their doctor. Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness or difficulty breathing should seek urgent medical attention and in the event of a medical emergency call triple zero 000. 08.01.2022 AIR QUALITY UPDATE (10.30am, Thursday 12 Dec 2019) Good news Canberra! The smoky conditions have eased this morning. With current levels, most people will not ...experience any health impact. However, intermittent patchy smoke haze is expected to linger until Sunday, so people who are more sensitive to the effects of smoke, particularly those with asthma and other heart or lung conditions, should continue to take care. This includes taking medication as prescribed by their doctor and avoiding vigorous exercise outdoors during smoky conditions. Our team at the Health Protection Service (pictured below) are continuing to monitor levels and if the situation changes significantly in the coming days, we will issue further advice. To continue to monitor the levels of smoke in the air (PM2.5), and for the most up to date health advice relating to smoky conditions, you can head to our ‘health advice for smoky air’ webpage at https://bit.ly/34g0I1c And of course, further info to minimise the health impacts of outdoor smoke, see our factsheet at: http://bit.ly/36kNP7q

05.01.2022 Canberra good news! As of this afternoon (3 March 2020) there are still 0 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the ACT. The community can be assured that we are in ...a very good place to respond to the outbreak. You currently have a low risk of COVID-19 if you have not recently travelled to an affected country outside of Australia. 05.01.2022 #COVID19 update (2 April 2020) There have been 4 new confirmed ACT cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours bringing the ACT’s total to 87*. The new cases consi...st of 1 male and 3 females, aged between 21 and 60. All of the new cases are linked to overseas travel, including on cruise ships. One case is still under investigation by ACT Health. There remains no evidence of community transmission in the ACT. There are currently 8 COVID-19 patients in Canberra hospitals. Four of these are in ICU. A total of 11 cases have recovered from COVID-19 and have been released from self-isolation. The rest are isolating at home with ACT Health support. There have been 4931 negative COVID-19 tests in the ACT to date. The ACT has recorded one death. ACT Health is continuing to take appropriate public health action in line with national guidelines. *Reduction in total confirmed cases After further testing, another of the ACT’s cases has been determined to not have COVID-19 and has been removed from the ACT’s total. As a result the total for the ACT has only increased by 3 today despite recording 4 new confirmed cases. This is the third case to be removed from the ACT’s statistics. ACT Health has taken a very precautionary approach to classifying indeterminate tests that indicate a probable positive result. In cases where the indeterminate tests indicate it is more likely to be positive than not, the individual has been classified as a confirmed case until further testing can provide a more definitive result. As with other confirmed cases, thorough contact tracing is undertaken. When further testing ultimately determines the individual to not have COVID-19, the case is reclassified as a negative result.

03.01.2022 UPDATE ON HOURLY AIR QUALITY MONITORING With the extended period that Canberra has been experiencing heavy smoke conditions, we have had a lot of feedback and r...equests from the community for hourly air quality monitoring information to be put on the ACT Health website. We have listened to this feedback and hourly levels of PM2.5 data, along with the existing 24-hour rolling averages, is now available: https://www.health.act.gov.au//monitoring-and-regulating-a The amount of PM2.5 in the air is the best indicator of how much smoke is in the air. We hope this information will provide people a better understanding of the levels of smoke in the air throughout the day, so they can manage their levels of exposure when we are experiencing relatively good air quality levels and as we continue to experience periods of heavy smoke on and off. At this time our health advice will continue to be based on the 24-hour rolling average data, in accordance with the best available research on the health impacts of smoke. However, we also want to encourage Canberrans to trust their senses. If there is a strong smell of smoke and poor visibility from a heavy smoke haze, stay indoors. But if the air looks clear, we encourage people to go outdoors, get some light exercise and open up the doors and windows to their homes to clear out any smoke that may have found its way inside. We will continue to listen to your feedback and refine air quality information over time on our website, as appropriate. This will likely involve working with national counterparts, noting we are not alone in this. For more information on using the hourly data, alongside the 24-hour rolling averages on our website, watch this video:
