24.01.2022 RARE ANTIQUE SET OF SIX GOTHIC ENGLISH OAK CHAIRS CA 1870 INCLUDING 2 ARMCHAIRS ...................................$3500................................... A rare set of of six Gothic Chairs circa 1870. Crafted in solid English Oak and have just returned from the upholsterer who has re-upholstered the fully sprung chairs in an expensive imported German fabric at a cost of $1800 and they have not been used since. The chairs are in excellent condition for their age and all j...oints are tight with no repairs required and they are amongst the heaviest chairs I have handled especially the arm chairs. In the United Kingdom the armchairs alone would fetch my asking price so I am of the opinion that the chairs are very well priced for the Australian market. I thought that these chairs would look stunning around the appropriate antique timber dining table or refectory table. Please peruse my pictures which best describe these special chairs and rest assured that these chairs will stand proudly amongst any quality antique collection as well as a more contemporary decor. We welcome inspection of any of our items and urge you to take the time to do so if you are able. We are available 7 days and nights a week most times so just message or call us to make a mutually suitable time. Our items are always competitively and sensibly priced however we will always take into consideration reasonable offers. The Patina is rated at 8 (please read our explanation of this number on our page). The dimensions of the armchairs at their widest, deepest and highest points are as follows :- Width..... 69 cm Depth..... 74 cm Height..... 108 cm The height to the top of the seat cushion is 50 cm The dimensions of the chairs at their widest, deepest and highest points are as follows :- Width..... 44 cm Depth..... 46 cm Height..... 92 cm The height to the top of the seat cushion is 52 cm

24.01.2022 PATINA Many antiques have been inherited, passed down or onsold over the years and have therefore been subject to varying levels of care and have quite often be...en moved to different locations. This passage of time has led to each individual piece developing what is known as a "Patina". In terms of antique furniture "Patina" is EVERYTHING that happens to an object over the course of time. The nick in the leg of a table, the scratch on a table top, the loss of moisture in the paint, the crazing of a finish, the gentle wear patterns on the edges of a piece, the shrinkage in the timber, and even the fiddly lock and key. All these things add up to create a softer look with subtle colour changes, a "character" or "personality". Patina is built from all these effects both natural and man-made and combine to create a true "antique". It is virtually impossible to describe in full the patination of an antique piece of furniture. It is impossible to describe and photograph every nick, dent, scratch, shrinkage line, craze or wear pattern on an antique item but we will always attempt to describe and photograph anything that may be of concern to some buyers. What some people see as patination is seen by others as flawed. It is for this reason that we urge you to inspect any piece that you are considering and if you are unable to do so we urge you to ask as many questions as is necessary to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the subject piece before you commit to buy. You will find in all our descriptions that we allot each item a patina rating from 1 to 10. Any item that scores 5 and under will mean that the item is in need of major restoration. A rating of 6 or 7 means that the item may need some minor restoration. A rating of 8 means that the piece is in excellent condition for its age while 9 and above is a superior antique. See more

23.01.2022 MONUMENTAL ANTIQUE "JACK IN THE GREEN" SOLID OAK HIGHLY CARVED SIDEBOARD CA 1870 ...................................$4900................................... A ...Monumental Highly Carved Antique Oak Sideboard of Large Proportions. This impressive sideboard has been crafted entirely in solid planks of high quality quarter sawn oak and has many features with the most impressive feature being the influence of the medieval deity affectionately known as "Jack in the Green" who first surfaced throughout Europe in medieval times. "Jack in the Green" was a most important Deity in Mythology and in the final part of my description is a very brief explanation of who "Jack in the Green" was and his significance in times of old. Please read on if you are interested in the mythology surrounding "The Green Man" as you might well find it interesting. To me, "The Green Man" definately makes the sideboard much more interesting. The sideboard is crowned with a nicely carved image of the malevolant "Green Man" who appears to be looking down on his faithful followers while other images are also found flanking the large central drawers. The sideboard has many other features including the lofty, highly carved backboard which has a large "shield" mirror which has large hand bevelled perimeters and is flanked by two "Babewyns" with two smaller bevelled mirrors below. The backboard has three shelves with two below the "Babewyns" and one larger shelf centrally located beneath the mirror. Foliate carvings adorn almost all of the backboard while the crowning pediment containing the image of "Jack" is a skilled piece of carving indeed. The cabinet below is also highly carved with foliate carvings and more images of "Jack". It contains two large drawers with an open nook above a two door cabinet which in turn is flanked by two larger cupboards with central shelves. All this adds up to quite a good amount of storage. As mentioned previously the sideboard has been crafted in oak which has been predominately quarter sawn. The craftsman has spared no expense by choosing High Quality planks of quarter sawn Oak to display his skills. The creation of the ribbon grain in oak today is rarely seen due to the uneconomical nature of the process. In order to create the ribbon grain the timber must firstly be "Quarter Sawn" which is far more expensive because of the need to double (or more) handle the log and because there is a high proportion of wastage involved in the process however the process creates a stable decorative timber that is less prone to cup or distort. Quarter sawn boards are radial cut from the centre of the tree to produce the distinctive ribbon effect across the whole board. Please peruse my pictures which best describe this impressive high quality antique. There is no doubt that this piece would be the centre piece of any room and a definite talking point. The sideboard can take its place amongst any high quality antique collection and is in excellent condition for its age with no damage or shrinkage to the timbers while having attained a glorious patina over the last 140 years. "JACK IN THE GREEN". ------------------------------- To our ancestors from most countries worldwide, "Jack in the Green", who was also known as "The Green Man", "The May King", or "John Barleycorn" was the God of Vegetation and Plant Life. He symbolized the life that is found in the natural plant world, and in the earth itself. In the British Isles, the forests a thousand years ago were vast, spreading for miles and miles, farther than the eye could see and because of the sheer size, the forest could be a dark and scary place. However, it was also a place you had to enter, whether you wanted to or not, because it provided meat for hunting, plants for eating, and wood for burning and building. In the winter, the forest must have seemed quite dead and desolate... but in the spring, it returned to life.... "Beltane"... It would be logical for early peoples to have applied some sort of spiritual aspect to the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Many Spirits and Deities were associated with nature, wildlife and plant growth and if you had just spent the winter starving and freezing, when "Beltane" arrived it was certainly time to give thanks to whatever spirits watched over your tribe. April's showers have given way to rich and fertile earth, and as the land greens, there are few celebrations as representative of fertility as Beltane. Observed on May 1st in the Northern Hemisphere November 1 for Southern Hemisphere readers, festivities typically begin the evening before, on the last night of April or October. It's a time to welcome the abundance of the fertile earth, and a day that has a long (and sometimes scandalous) history. Depending on your tradition, there are a number of ways you can celebrate this Sabbat and the focus is nearly always on fertility. It's the time when the earth mother opens up to the fertility god, and their union brings about healthy livestock, strong crops, and new life all around. The Maypole is one of the traditional symbols of Beltane, and let's not kid ourselves about its purpose: it's a giant phallus. Because Beltane festivities usually kicked off the night before with a big bonfire, the Maypole celebration usually took place shortly after sunrise the next morning. This was when couples (and probably more than a few surprised triads) came staggering in from the fields, clothes in disarray and straw in their hair after a night of bonfire inspired lustines. The pole was erected on the village green or common, or even a handy field -- thrust into the ground either permanently or on a temporary basis -- and brightly colored ribbons attached to it. Young people came and danced around the pole, each holding the end of a ribbon. As they wove in and out, men going one way and women the other, it created a sleeve of sorts -- the enveloping womb of the earth -- around the pole. By the time they were done, the Maypole was nearly invisible beneath a sheath of ribbons. Folklore associates "the Green Man" with May Day celebrations, and with the character of "Jack in the Green", who is a more modern adaptation of the Green Man. "Jack" is a more specifically defined version of the nature spirit than the earlier Green Man archetype. While some form of the Green Man was probably present in a variety of separate early cultures, he developed independently into a variety of newer, more modern characters. This would explain why in some areas he is Jack, while in others he is Robin of the Hood, or Herne the Hunter in different parts of England. Likewise, other, non-British cultures seem to have similar nature deities. The Green Man is typically portrayed as a human face surrounded by dense foliage. Such images appear as far back as the eleventh century, in church carvings. As Christianity spread, the Green Man went into hiding, with stonemasons leaving secret images of his face around cathedrals and churches. He enjoyed a revival during the Victorian era, when he became popular with architects, who used his visage as a decorative aspect in buildings. Legends connected to the archetype of the Green Man are everywhere. In the Arthurian legend, the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a prime example. The Green Knight represents the pre-Christian nature religion of the British Isles. Although he originally confronts Gawain as an enemy, the two later are able to work together - perhaps a metaphor for the assimilation of British Paganism with the new Christian theology. Many scholars also suggest that the tales of Robin Hood evolved from Green Man mythology. Allusions to the Green Man can even be found in J.M. Barrie's classic Peter Pan - an eternally youthful boy, dressed in green and living in the forest with the wild animals. Today, some traditions of Wicca interpret the Green Man as an aspect of the Horned God, Cernunnos. The spring season, particularly around Beltane, is typically tied to a number of pre-Christian nature spirits. Many of these are similar in origin and characteristics, but tend to vary based on region and language. In English folklore, few characters stand out -- or are as recognizable -- as the Green Man. We welcome inspection of any of our items and prefer that you to take the time to do so if you are able. We are available 7 days and nights a week so just message or call us to make a mutually suitable time. 18.01.2022 SUBERB ARTS AND CRAFTS SIDEBOARD BY T. KNIGHT & SON OF BATH ENGLAND CIRCA 1890 ...................................$2800.00................................... A Quality Antique Victorian Sideboard crafted Circa 1890 by the company known as T. Knight & Son of Bath, England who were one of the best known exponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement and who were influential in the spread of the Movement throughout Europe and North America. Edward Knight founded his company in the m...id 1830's but only began to be noticed when he was invited to exhibit his furniture at the International Exhibition of 1862 which was also known as The Great London Exposition. At the time The Bath County News wrote " Messrs. knight and Son of Milsom Street have now gained recognition for their fine furniture which shows the excellent taste and cleverness of design which characterise the work of this firm, and which produces articles noted for solidity as well as beauty." The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international design movement that flourished between 1860 and 1910, especially in the second half of that period, continuing its influence until the 1930's. The Movement was essentially a reaction to the impoverished state of the decorative arts and the mass production conditions under which they were produced. It stood for the revival of traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and quite often applied medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. It advocated economic and social reform and has been said to be essentially anti-industrial and as such was an important period of time for the Decorative Arts. Led by the artist and writer William Morris (18341896) and the architect Charles Voysey (18571941) it developed first and most fully in the British Isles, but quickly spread to Europe and North America. This Antique Sideboard is quintessentially a product of the Arts and Crafts Movement and remains in original condition. Crafted in fine quality Mahogany Timbers including secondary timbers and even the drawer linings are of Mahogany. My pictures best describe the many features of this Quality Sideboard and is a superb example of decorative arts from the Arts and Crafts Period and it can take its place amongst any quality antique collection. 15.01.2022 LARGE ANTIQUE BIEDERMEIER ARMOIRE / LINEN PRESS / PANTRY CUPBOARD CIRCA 1840 ..................................$2950................................... A Large Antique Biedermeir Armoire which can be utilised in many ways. I thought it could make a great linen press, pantry cupboard or storage cupboard however the armoire was previously used in a wine cellar for the storage of expensive wines. I am sure that those interested will have a specific use in mind for this excepti...onal piece. The Armoire has been crafted in European Ash timbers circa 1840 and is characteristic of the Biedermeier furniture which was popular throughout Central Europe between 1815 and 1850. Biedermeir furniture is essentially attributed to the Germanic States during this period of time however the designs were also adopted in most Scandinavian Countries and would quickly spread throughout the European mainland. The early design emphasis was placed on clean lines and minimal ornamentation which is evident in this piece and is the reason I have dated it circa 1840 but it could be earlier. The later Biedermeir designs were to change drastically after 1850 as the rising middle classes became obsessed with displaying their wealth by commissioning much more ornate pieces of furniture. Most Biedermeir furniture makers used locally sourced timbers such as Ash, Cherrywood or Pearwood and I am of the opinion that the timber in this piece is Ash rather than any of the others I have mentioned. Stylistically, Biedermeir furniture is just simple and elegant as can be seen in the piece I am offering. We welcome inspection of any of our items and urge you to take the time to do so if you are able. 10.01.2022 1967 PROOF SWAN/GOOSE PATTERN DOLLAR (not the more common uncirculated milled edge version) ...................................$2250................................... On offer is a Proof Australian 1967 "SWAN" Pattern Silver Dollar. I must stress that this is the "Plain Edge" Proof version of which only 750 were minted as opposed to the Uncirculated version of which 1500 were minted. Cases alone can fetch between $300 and $600 depending on their condition. Identifying a proof Swan dollar from an uncirculated Swan dollar is simple. 09.01.2022 ATTRACTIVE ANTIQUE AUSTRALIAN COLONIAL CEDAR CHEST OF GRADUATED DRAWERS CA 1880 ...................................$1650................................... An attractive example of an Australian Colonial Cedar Chest of two over three graduated Drawers from our Colonial past. The chest was crafted circa 1870 and is made from well selected planks of Australian Colonial Cedar which exhibit the wonderful grain and the deep fiery glow and warmth that is unique to Australian ...Colonial Cedar. Unfortunately the last of our old growth Colonial Cedar trees, which were centuries old, were harvested around 1900 and I doubt if we will ever see cedar of this age and quality again in Australia. The chest is craftsman built with graduated drawers which have been nicely dovetailed and which still glide smoothly and as was originally intended while the chest stands on its four original bun feet. The drawers all retain their original drawer pulls, locks and escutcheons however there are no keys. As can be expected with a piece which is 140 years old there have been some repairs over its long life but nothing that detracts from the overall attractiveness or stability of the piece. You will see from my pictures that this is a chest of simple design but even so is quite a stylish piece that will suit most decors but which is most suited to a country decor due to its colonial history. A handsome piece of Cedar Furniture from our Colonial past which can take its place amongst any good Australian or English antique collection. We welcome inspection of any of our items and urge you to take the time to do so if you are able. 03.01.2022 SUPERIOR ANTIQUE WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY MOONPHASE GRANDFATHER CLOCK CIRCA 1835 ...................................$8900................................... Before I... describe this wonderful clock in full I would like to explain to those interested how these clocks work and why they were a useful time piece in olden days. I will also explain how to set the moon dial. A moon dial was never intended as a novel decoration for the amusement of the owner and his friends. There was a practical side to lunar displays on clocks which were first seen in Germany from the end of the 16th century. When longcase clocks for homeowners in England became popular in the late 17th century, street and road lighting for travel at night hardly existed anywhere. If one wanted to have friends over or travel out, one had to know when moonlight would be available. Also near the end of the 17th century, the English Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, worked out his tables showing that the moon's phases were closely linked to the regular rise and fall of the tides. Since few coastal streams had bridges, it was useful to know when a coach could ford a stream and keep the owner and his powder dry, and a clock could provide this important information. There is also a lot of folklore that suggests that farmers planted by the moon's cycles, and that the moonphase clock helped alert the farmer who could then make his preparations. Moon dials, or more properly "lunar dials", usually take the form of a disc incorporated into the main dial plate, usually in the arched top section. The circumference of the disc is cut with teeth so that the machinery of the clock, usually the "motion work", which is on the front plate of the movement and is responsible for moving the hands, can engage the disc and click it forward twice every twenty four hours. Half of the disc's circumference displays one full lunar cycle (29 and one-half days) and the days are numbered around the arch of the opening. The lunar cycle starts at the new moon (a dark night sky and no man-in-the-moon face showing on the clock), progresses to the full face showing on the 15th day, the full moon, and back to no face again as the moon wanes. Most lunar dials are partially concealed on each side of their opening in the main dial plate by circular globes of the earth that allow the painted face to emerge slowly just as the real moon goes out of and back into the earth's shadow. To set your clock's lunar dial you need to know the date of the current month on which the full moon will occur. The trick to interpreting the data is knowing that the full moon happens on the fifteenth day of the 29 day lunar calendar, which is independent of the day it occurs in the monthly calendar. For example, take today's date as being February 3rd, 2012. The newspapers show that the full moon will occur on the 7th of February. Therefore, the 3rd , today, is 4 days before the full moon. Set your moon dial so that its pointer, usually a projection out of the top of the round face, points to "11" on the numbered half circle around the arch. In 4 days, on the 7th of February, it will be the 15th day of the lunar calendar, the pointer on the round moon face of your clock will be straight up and the face fully exposed, and the full moon will be in the night sky. DESCRIPTION An Excellent, Original, Larger Than Most, Well Proportioned, Classic North Western England, Flame Mahogany Grandfather Clock of Superior Quality with an uncommonly large 14" hand painted dial and a high quality two train movement which is original to the case and not a marriage. Crafted during the reign of William IV with the Clockmaker being George Murray of Liverpool whose premises were located in James Street, and whose name appears in the 1837 Pigots Trade Directory of Liverpool. The longcase cabinet is the "short door" type which was popular between 1830 and 1850 and the cabinet is a superb piece of craftmanship with the hood having an opposing swan neck pediment separated by a central reeded embellishment. Superb hand turned collumns featuring reeded and twisted columns flank the hood while the trunk has larger matching reeded and twisted quarter columns and are a principal feature of the case. Another principal feature of the longcase are the fine flame mahogany timbers with all panels having crossbanded mahogany inlays of the highest quality including the door perimeters. The hand drawn glass is original and displaying the desirable wavy imperfections of antique glass. The Longcase stands on bracket feet typical of the period and the backboards consist of two broad and full length planks of oak which are original to the piece and only found on quality pieces. All hardware is original including hinges, lock and escutcheon however the key is not original. The large hand painted 14'' breakarch dial is uncommon with most moonphase dials having 12" or 13" dials and there are two other subsidiary dials, one for the seconds and one for the day of the month. The dial has colourfully painted "Damsel" themed corner spandrels while the rotating moon dial has two well executed hand painted scenes between the moon faces. One is a seascape of a Galleon under full sail while the other is a serene landscape of a large provincial windmill. The lunar dial will be partially concealed on each side of the opening in the main dial plate by globes of the Earth with maps of the world as it was then known. This allows the painted face to emerge slowly just as the real moon goes out of and back into the earth's shadow. The hours are marked in Roman Numerals and are separated by minute lines while the hands are hand pressed in gilded brass. The clock movement which is original to the case and began life together is a very high quality two train movement which strikes hourly on a gong and the original pulleys, pendulum and 12lb iron weights are still present. The clock movement has been thoroughly overhauled and restored by Kai Wandres a highly qualified German Trained Clockmaker whose details are shown in my pictures. Kai can verify the authenticity of this clock and I must stress that the clock has been fully overhauled and not just repaired. A repair will only address one particular problem while the overhaul process involves the removal of the clock movement from the case, fully disassemble the movement piece by piece, thoroughly inspect under magnification all components for signs of wear and replace those showing wear, clean all components using a specialised cleaning solution, dress and polish all pivots, re-bush all worn bushes, test the gear trains, re-assemble the movement and oil and make all necessary timing adjustments, run the movement for at least two days, return the movement to the case and run fully assembled for at least another five days. This clock carries a twelve month workmanship guarantee and it is highly unlikely that the movement will need repairs however in the unlikely event that the clock needs warranty repairs it will be the owner's responsibility to return and collect the clock from Kai's workshop. This superb antique moonphase grandfather clock is a superior example in original condition and I doubt if there is a better example available for sale in Australia today. It stands fully revived, tested and calibrated and as such is ready for sale. We welcome inspection of any of our items and urge you to take the time to do so if you are able. 03.01.2022 SUPERIOR ANTIQUE REGENCY FLAME MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE WITH WATERFALL BOOKCASE C1825. ...................................$6900................................... A Superior Antique from the Regency Period Circa 1825 and is the finest I have seen for many years. Beautifully crafted from the finest of flame mahogany timbers, this quality Secretaire with matching Waterfall Bookcase is testament to the craftmanship of the period which has seen this piece survive for almost 200 year...s in almost original condition. The Regency Period in the United Kingdom is the period between 1811 and 1820 at a time when King George III was deemed unfit to rule and his son The Prince of Wales ruled as his Proxy as Prince Regent. The Prince Regent became George IV on the death of his father in 1820. However the term 'Regency Era when discussed in relation to distinctive trends in British architecture, literature, fashions, furniture and decorative arts, politics and culture is used to describe the transitional period between Georgian and Victorian eras, with the focus on the Pre-Victorian period from 1811 through 1837 when Queen Victoria succeeded William IV. It is with this in mind that I have dated this piece at Circa 1825. Everything about this piece screams quality from the expertly hand carved and bookmatched shield panels on the cabinet doors to the genuine ebony timber detail surrounding the beautifully fitted satinwood stationary drawers with turned ebony drawer pulls. From the cockbeaded secretaire drawer to the wonderful crossbanding. Not to mention the superb hand carved "S" scrolls that support the Waterfall Bookshelves and the matching hand carved splay feet that support the entire cabinet. Unusually, the cabinet below has adjustable filing petitions which are typically Georgian with a finely dovetailed secret drawer above. All original hardware is present with original working locks and keys. The Antique Secretaire is in superb original condition with only the quality embossed leather a replacement which appears to have been replaced many years ago. This item is amongst the finest that I have handled and is indeed a rare piece that I am sure will become a family heirloom to the generations that follow. Only the secretaire and waterful bookcase are for sale. None of the items in, around or on the item are included in this sale.
