25.01.2022 Regrettably our buffet tour lunch had to go, but our team in the cafe have been working hard on a replacement lunch that would provide a healthy, refreshing and versatile option with the same great value. Introducing our signature salad bowls, made fresh each morning and designed to nourish you while enjoying your time exploring Maria Island. Options include a pesto aioli chicken, smoked salmon and vegetarian avocado. Each bowl contains a house salad, roasted pumpkin, cher...ry tomatoes, roast peppers, feta, parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar. The seals were all relaxing in the water and they were so excited to play with us, they followed us into the caves! We are very blessed to cruise to this special island. A new way to experience Maria Island, the cruise will depart from Darlington and require you to catch the Maria Island Ferry over to meet the cruise. This allows you to design the very best experience in one day! Take the cruise in the morning and enjoy a hike or bike ride in the afternoon. Our 2.5hr cruise will depart Darlington at 9:30am and requires you... to take the 8:30am ferry sailing. Once aboard the cruise we will take you around the remote east coast of Maria Island to Riedle Bay, enjoying all the wonderful sights of the Fossil Cliffs, Mt Bishop & Clerk, Mistaken Cape, sea caves, waterfalls and of course the famous Painted Cliffs. Upon returning to Darlington at 12 noon, you have the flexibility to chose your own return time from Maria Island on the ferry. 09.01.2022 A glassy calm Mistaken Cape (Raggedy Head) is a rare sight. This is Maria Island’s eastern most point and as such it always catches the wind, swell and tide. On our circumnavigation cruise of Maria Island, we stopped above a giant granite pinnacle that rises from 60m to 6m below the surface. It is a highly regarded dive site in Tasmania but one that is extremely challenging to dive due to the weather. This weekend would be perfect!

05.01.2022 Ile Des Phoques (locally White Rock) is a haven for marine life. Sitting between Maria Island and Schouten Island, this small granite island is home to hundreds of playful Australian fur seals, nesting white bellied sea eagles, comorants, terns and sometimes little penguins. The seals here exhibit an amazing relaxed behaviour, their normal and natural behaviour. Having a history of hunting seals has created a wary disposition for the seals of boats and people. This is sta...rting to change. The seals at Ile Des Phoques are respected and every visitor we have seen here has been sensitive in their interaction with them, including all local fisherman. Seals have personalities just like dogs. They are sea puppies! One of the most intelligent and intuitive animals we get the privilege to observe. Ile Des Phoques was once a breeding colony for seals before sealers decimated their numbers. Darlington at Maria Island was in fact a sealing station before convicts were established and Ile Des Phoques was their main hunting ground. Over the past 14 years of interacting with the seals, diving and cruising to Ile Des Phoques, we have seen a surprising change in the population. During our early encounters, we would notice only a single pup being born there each spring, from what was likely a passing pregnant female who hauled out there just to give birth. Almost all of the seals were young males. Now the island’s population includes many females, who have returned here permanently to breed. Now each summer we witness around 50 pups born on the steep rocky slopes. This is a credit to everyone who visits Ile Des Phoques, showing the seals we are no longer a threat. Amazing to see them so relaxed and happy at their home. This one was spotted early morning diving in to steal a fish from a couple of unimpressed Pacific gulls at the saltworks site.

Triabunna Harbour is a great location to provide marine rescue support to the East Coast, potentially covering the coastline of Freycinet, Schouten Island, Maria Island, Marion Bay, the Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas. We are excited to support this initiative and will work with the community to create an organisation that will provide additional safety to our proud fishing fle...et, our aquaculture fleet, the huge number of recreational boat users in this area, our tourism charter boats and support PWS in remote area evacuations on Maria Island. An organisation like this would provide first class training to locals looking to get into the industry but who might find it difficult to get the required sea time for qualifications. It would provide a platform for our professionals in the marine industries to refresh on rescue training, bringing people together from different sectors. Triabunna has a high number of enthusiastic, qualified and experienced people to operate a VMR and with Government support, industry support and private sponsorship, I am sure this can be a success and something our town can be really proud of.
