25.01.2022 hello - some interesting history : Im very close to finish a book that I have been working on my husband's family tree. What interesting is that his ancestors ...is Captain Robert William Hepburn who emigrated with his wife and eight children from Scotland to Tasmania in 1828. He acquired 565 ha of land at the mouth of the Swan River near to the present day town of Coles Bay on the Freycinet Peninsula, and built his homestead ‘Swanwick’ there in the 1830s (the nearby point is still called Point Hepburn). Wife is Jacobina Hosie. Robert was also a magistrate for the east coast of Tasmania. One of the 8 children is Lillias Hepburn who married a convict Matthew Frederick Pearce. He was sent to Van Dieman land for 7 years but I dont know what his crime was. It sound like an arranged married by Lillias father Robert. Matthew was working for Robert. Matthew and Lillias lived at 1 Devonshire place, Hobart. They had 7 children. Im trying to find a bit more about their 2nd child Charlotte Warburton Partington - as there been lots of mention about Lillias as if it sound like they seem to took care of Lillias in her last years? They are buried together. We are related under their 3rd child James Pearce who had 2 wives and 17 children! The Pearce went on for 4 more generations. Their 7th child was William Pearce - He held the office of Member of Parliament in 1922, for Franklin. I was wondering if anyone know a bit more about this ancestor? Also, I noticed there been a few stillborns and children have died in the family around 1820s - 1850s - pneumonia? or did something happened around this period? My in law lived in Spring Beach and spent lots of time in the Coles Bay region, little did we know that where our generations begins. Im sure there lots of Hepburns there as Capt Robert youngest children Robert Junior had 18 children! (2 wives)

23.01.2022 Soon to be released ! 100 Years of The May Shaw , a history of healthcare on the east Coast, written by Hilary Burden, an author and broadcaster, now a full time resident of Swansea, who often holidayed here as a girl when her father was the G.P. for Derby to our north. Craig Johnston asked Hilary to research and write a history of May Shaw and as he states in the book’s dedication, May Shaw has always belonged to the community, is managed by a committee for the community ...and provides ongoing Multi-Service Healthcare for the community. Craig Johnston has dedicated many years of service to the community and in particular May Shaw Health Centre both as Citizen and Councillor. The assistance provided by Craig and Jennifer Johnston to many organisations and in particular May Shaw is not always well known, but be assured they have been generous benefactors in the past and continue to do so, by publishing this book , all proceeds from the sale of the book will go to May Shaw. There are Three versions available, a limited edition collectors volume in a stylish black slip case and this is priced at $80 and limited to 100 signed copies. A hardback volume at $ 50 and a Paperback or softcover volume at $ 30. Books can be ordered and prepaid for at May Shaw Reception and will be available on the launch day scheduled for 2 PM on the 31st of October, In the R.S.L. dining room and, Carpark and the Swansea Courthouse. It is hoped for a celebratory atmosphere with Afternoon Tea, refreshments some light entertainment, we are hoping to bring residents from May Shaw weather permitting and books can also be purchased on the day of the Launch. There is to be an auction of one very special collector’s volume which contains the signatures of many people featured in the book. As early as 1910 from the Bush Nursing Association through to the May Shaw Bequest given by Howard Amos in memory of his wife in 1936, through different buildings within the town to the current location has been a journey involving many of our citizens past and present, many being born in the various buildings or treated after accidents, the surprising number of people I have encountered who have worked for the many guises of Health Care in Swansea and in particular May Shaw has amazed me , and this booklet which does not try to catch everyone or every event, gives an invaluable snapshot of the last 100 years of health care in Swansea, and the sales will hopefully assist in providing many more years of service to our community. Noel Stanley

22.01.2022 Departures and Arrivals: 900 babies christening bonnets Artist: Christina Henri - Roses from the Heart In April of 2004, Christina Henri opened her commemorati...ve project 'Departures and Arrivals' at the Ross Female Factory Site. There were 12,000 convict women transported to Tasmania until 1853. These women were often sexually exploited in domestic service and then punished for becoming pregnant. Between 1829 and 1877, 1200 babies were born at the Cascade Female Factory Site in Hobart. The prisoners would be sentenced to six months hard labour within the Female Factory system after weaning their child. Approximately 900 of the 1200 babies died. The number of babies that died at the Ross and Launceston Female Factory sites remain unknown to this day. "The deaths were officially recorded as anonymous - there was no specific identity of mother or child," Ms Henri said. The bonnets were contributed from around TAS, NSW, VIC and the ACT. The installation of embroidered bonnets were housed at the Tasmanian Wool Centre Museum for a few weeks following. You can view more information on this moving installation at the Ross Female Factory Site, or at the Tasmanian Wool Centre Museum, which remains open daily to visitors. Information gathered from - The Examiner "Convict babies recognised" and Redeeming Memories: A Visual Investigation into the Lives of Convict Women by Christina Janette Henri, BFA (Hons), Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania.

14.01.2022 COVID 19 - Postponement of the Amos Family Bicentenary. The Amos Family Bicentenary Committee (AFBC Inc) has been closely monitoring the evolving COVID-19 situation and its potential impact on holding our family Bicentenary in March 2021. We wish to advise we have decided to postpone arrangements for our commemorative weekend, originally planned for the weekend of March 20 - 21, 2021. Our decision is to postpone, rather than cancel the event. We have rescheduled the event to... the weekend of NOVEMBER 6 - 7, 2021. The circumstances of continuing outbreaks of COVID-19 in Victoria, New South Wales, New Zealand and now Queensland have made such a decision inevitable. Border closures will remain for some time yet and particularly so here in Tasmania. We will continue to monitor events as they unfold and confirm by mid next year at the latest if viability of the new November date becomes doubtful. We make this decision with deep regret. Many organisations here in Tasmania have already resolved to cancel events close in time to ours, including the Wooden Boat Festival in February. It would be foolhardy to continue in hope, when all the signals suggest we would need to abandon the function anyway. We will post this note on our website https://www.amos200.com and keep you informed of developments. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Our Duty of Care to the health and wellbeing of our community, family and friends has been a determining factor in this decision. We now look forward to our Bicentenary being held in November 2021. AFBC Inc. will focus on preparing a fantastic 200 year commemoration in hopefully better times. Regards, Julian Amos Chair, on behalf of AFBC Inc. email: [email protected]
