20.01.2022 Put down your curds and whey, your shoes and your broom, and make peace with spiders. It’s National Save A Spider Day! Did you know that around April/May, with... the first heavy rains, mature male trapdoor spiders exit their burrows to look for a mate? It takes approximately 5 years for a male spider to reach maturity so what a tragedy it would be if he was squashed on the way to his first ever date? And the oldest recorded trapdoor spider was 43! 19 new trapdoor spider species, in just one genus, were described in the recent PhD of #AMLR staff member Sophie Bass, yet she says we haven’t scratched the surface in terms of understanding all there is to know about Australia’s spiders. One species found in a small reserve in the Mount Lofty Ranges, hasn’t been found anywhere else. Not winning you over yet? Maybe you feel there are too many around. That’s not the case for all spiders. Studies show trapdoor numbers decreasing at an alarming rate. Land clearing and stocking have a big impact, which means that conservation parks, roadsides, reserves, etc are important. Everything in nature is connected and spiders play an important role in the environment. Have we won you over yet? Photo: New species of trapdoor spider, Sophie Bass
18.01.2022 Great coverage of our research on turtle declines by the ABC today
11.01.2022 Pressing flowers was a fun hobby when we were kids, says Jo Clarke - but it can be a useful practice for grown-up gardeners, too.
07.01.2022 Every now and then we have a conscientious turtle-owner querying if they might release their pet turtle into the River Murray. Although short-necked tortoises are in decline and we do want to see their numbers increase, captive turtles may bring with them pathogens that could affect our wild populations. Think of it as us going on holiday overseas and taking a nasty flu to the people we are visiting. In addition, they may not be as equipped as we think to fend for themselves. So instead of releasing the pet turtle who has outgrown its human home, we try and find it a new home. Please contact the NRM Board for help if needing to re-home a native pet.
05.01.2022 Due to continuing reduced funding the nursery has permanently closed and the EHMPCG is being wound up. Enquiries relating to volunteering please call the rural city of Murray Bridge. Thankyou all for the last 20 years... Vince Critchley Chair
