07.01.2022 Its that time of the year when the Department starts surveying for Australian Plague Locusts (APL). Were not anticipating a lot of APL activity this Autumn because there has been limited summer rainfall. This significantly reduces the likelihood of locust activity, however we cant rule out some isolated pockets across the Central and Wheatbelt areas. So we can get a better picture of what is occurring, please encourage everyone to keep an eye out for any signs of locust...s in paddocks and report them. People can use their existing My Pest Guide Reporter app MyPestGuide for APL or other exotic pest or weed reporting or the PestFax reporter app for APL which can be found at https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/diseases/pestfax-reporter For any other questions regarding locusts and reporting, please contact Svetlana Micic our DPIRD Entomologist based in Albany on [email protected] 9892 8591 or mobile 0427 772 051 https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/diseases/pestfax-reporter

05.01.2022 The Central Wheatbelt RBG has suspended its spring aerial wild dog baiting program due to a disagreement with the State Government. The $20,000 program sees he...licopter 1080 baiting in national park areas near Morawa and Perenjori. Under changes to the memorandum of understanding between the Biodiversity group and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. These changes mean the legal responsibility for the restricted chemical permit has now transferred to the biodiversity group. Previously the group operated on a permit owned by the DBCA. Central Wheatbelt RBG chair Chris Patmore said the group would not be taking that responsibility and had stopped baiting. "We have been operating under the current system for quite a few years," he said. "It's been working quite well and we've had no issues with baiting or no hassles or no incidents. "Now they have said we cannot use their name on RCP's." In a statement, Minister for Environment Stephen Dawson said he was aware of the issue. "It is my understanding that during a review of operational procedures last year, DBCA identified inconsistencies with the requirements of the Medicines and Poisons Act, Notices under that Act, and the Code of Practice," he said. "In response, DBCA revised the Memoranda of Understanding with RGBs for wild dog control. RBGs were made aware of this change in June 2019. "I have requested that DBCA works with other relevant government agencies and RBGs to find a pragmatic solution that enables wild dog control to continue. "

01.01.2022 PROMISING NEW BIOCONTROL FOR INVASIVE WEED Agriculture Victoria research scientists have identified a bug and a mite in America that could help tackle one of... Australias worst agricultural weeds silverleaf nightshade. Silverleaf nightshade is a Weed of National Significance and is a major problem for the red meat and grain industries in Southern Australia as it competes with other crops, depletes soil nutrients and is toxic to livestock. If they are suitable, the mite and bug will be imported to the advanced quarantine facilities at the AgriBio Centre for AgriBioscience in Victoria Australias premier state-of-the-art agribioscience facility. There, they will undergo rigorous screening against closely-related native, ornamental and crop species, after which, the results will be submitted to the Australian Government for a detailed import risk analysis.
