25.01.2022 Links between a climate denier and corona denialism that has cost the US 6 precious weeks, and potentially hundreds of thousands of lives. According to Washington Post, Conservatives close to Trump .. have been circulating an article by Richard A. Epstein, Coronavirus Perspective, which plays down the extent of the spread and the threat. Epstein questioned WHOs declaration of a pandemic: public officials have gone overboard, and suggested that "about five hundred people would die" in the U.S. Last year he published an article saying The professional skeptics are right: there is today no compelling evidence of an impending climate emergency. https://www.newyorker.com//the-contrarian-coronavirus-theo

24.01.2022 Time to stand up, speak out and tell the truth about our climate emergency! XR Inner East hosted another fabulous Junction circumnavigation with speeches from School Striker 14 yr old Elodie Dillon, XR Inner East convenor Liz Glab, climate activist Michael Staindl, moderated by Kooyong independent candidate Bill Chandler. We were delighted to see so many new faces, particularly parents and kids - drawn by the school strike movement and general anxiety about climate and bushfires. Dont forget to save the dates for the Autumn Rebellion - May 2 onwards - another massive School Strike on May 15 - and sign up to the new NCES Safe Climate Declaration here: https://www.climateemergencysummit.org/declaration/

22.01.2022 Packed out and overflowing, the National Climate Emergency Summit connected science and civil society with health, emergency and defence sectors to reimagine a way forward. Highlights of the first day included powerful presentations from US climate guru Michael Mann, Breakthroughs David Spratt; Adam Bandt and Peter Garrett packing a punch, and a stand out evening hypothetical, This Is Not a Drill, where the new Climate Commissioners move Australia to zero emissions by 2030. Read about the Summits forceful declaration here: https://www.theguardian.com//climate-summit-calls-for-urge

22.01.2022 Thanks to Melbourne XR Sybils bringing our attention to the criminal negligence of logging Victoria's precious forests, increasing risks of fire, and pushing native species closer to extinction. 22.01.2022 The climate needs you! 33 dead. 1.25 billion animals dead. Three quarters of all Australians impacted. Australia is now Exhibit A in the global climate crisis. And what is our government doing? Its time to stand up, speak out and tell the truth about the Climate Emergency and ecological devastation Join us at Joshs, 695 Bourke Rd at 5pm this Friday 21st, and then circumnavigate Camberwell Junction from 5.30 in peaceful protest. Walk with us, and find good friends and a place of hope as we tell the truth about our climate. https://www.facebook.com/events/383152709224379/

21.01.2022 350 youth delegates from more than 150 countries are meeting virtually in place of postponed COP26. The upshot will be a formal Treaty, to be handed to governments for adoption into law. "Australia's five-person delegation includes Adelaide year 10 student Tom Webster, who is raising awareness of Indigenous perspectives on bushfire prevention methods, the Adani coal mine and rising sea levels in the Torres Strait." https://www.canberratimes.com.au//youth-forge-on-with-gl/

21.01.2022 BP is moving closer to a transition to clean energy - taking a massive hit now on soon to be non performing fossil assets on its books. Covid has shown up the fossil sectors fantasy of endless growth. Its time to shift your money now - find a fund with good ESG performance, and move to a clean bank like Bank Australia or Bendigo. 20.01.2022 Calling attention to the climate emergency with smoke flares (hint - available at boat shops). After chants of "Free the Fairy" Violet was duly let go. Good work highlighting the terrible state of our climate, and the risk to our future from our government running away from dealing with the causes of climate damage, and failing to protect Australians. Why is this? Nothing to do with personal profit, donations, and offshore accounts (thanks Angus). One billion animals have died. We choked on smoke. Tomorrows fires will be. worse if we dont tell the truth and act right now. Register for our March 13 Murdoch rally here: https://www.facebook.com/events/212431826555400/ Images from 3 fantastic Live streams today - thanks John, XR Vic and XR Australia.

20.01.2022 1%, 2% or 8%? Dear Dan and James, you can do this. Declare studying online and working at home, today. Our grandparents need you to declare lockdown, which stops the rise of infections (1). Countries with early lockdown had infection rates at 1%, otherwise we are heading to Italy or Iran at 4% (2). Within 2-4 weeks our hospital system could be overwhelmed (3) with not enough ventilators and capacity(4). Australia has only 2000 ICU beds (5). Channel 7 says there will be 150,000 cases by Easter (6). The true infection rates in Wuhan stopped rising once lockdown happened (7). In Lombardy death rates are over 8% (8), with doctors having to choose who gets to be intubated (9) - hint, it is not the 80 year olds. Every day before lockdown adds another 40% (10). Act today to save our grandparents!

19.01.2022 Who's roasting who? BBQ'd politicians or toasted planet? Sure "It's Coal, don't be afraid" is not holding up well now given Black Summer and yet another once in century floods, but it seems that our fossilised government can't quit despite overwhelming evidence. RSVP for Women's march tomorrow and Discobedience on Sunday: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/melbourne-autumn-rebellion #extinctionrebellion #climateemergency

17.01.2022 $13.50 USD/MWh Hows that for new low, low prices? Solar deflation is set to continue as module makers look to monster projects to fill their order books. This latest massive offering in Abu Dhabi rides on a 30yr PPA. Regardless of the terms and location, the writing on the wall is clear - coals very very bad year only got worse. https://www.greentechmedia.com//worlds-largest-solar-proje

17.01.2022 Locking on to an oil well. Cooperative art stunt or violent protestor? Up to the audience to decide, all though some seem to be saying that the violence is all one way, with fossils chomping through our future possibilities, or even our future itself. Its time to tell the truth about our climate emergency, but we are locked into a system where our government is running away from the hard work of transition, beholden to its donors, and let off scot free by the press. If you want Murdoch to tell the truth, then come to another arrest scene on March 13th: https://www.facebook.com/events/212431826555400/ #ClimateEmergency #ExtinctionRebellion Julian Meehan

16.01.2022 Both ACT and San Francisco are moving away from using fossil gas in building construction. Using electric heat pumps can save thousands: https://theconversation.com/the-cheapest-way-to-heat-your-h Ref: https://ieefa.org/san-francisco-bans-natural-gas-use-in-ne/

15.01.2022 Hydrogen is coming - with a commercial sized "multi-billion dollar H2-Hub Gladstone facility that will produce renewable hydrogen as both a source of zero emissions gas and for use in the production of ammonia" to be constructed in Gladstone. Hydrogen is a zero emissions energy source that can be used to help decarbonise the more difficult industrial and transport sectors as well as support exporting green electrons (running a hydrolyser that where hydrogen is converted into ammonia). Its a start but Australia is lagging - countries like Germany are well on their way to using hydrogen to reduce emissions free steel. https://reneweconomy.com.au/queensland-unveils-gigawatt-sc/

14.01.2022 From Greg Mullins on our horror bushfire season, to ADF officers, doctors, ecologists, youth leaders, to Mayors and MPs, the consensus from the National Climate Emergency Summit was that we are facing severe, immanent threat to national security and our way of life from the climate crisis. What then next? Health and engineering associations, over 100 Councillor and local government key staff, and leaders from the school strike movement met to share resources and draw up their own association or sector response and strategy plans. Check out the forceful formal declaration here read out by Ian Dunlop: https://www.theguardian.com//climate-summit-calls-for-urge

14.01.2022 Richie Merzian: "on the use of dodgy Kyoto credits, the message to the Australian government is clear - dont use them and actually reduce your emissions instead". "the Climate Change Authority said use of the projected surplus from the current Kyoto Protocol period would effectively slash Australias promised 2030 emissions cut of 26-28 per cent on 2005 levels to just 14 per cent." https://www.theage.com.au//kyoto-credit-use-will-halve-cut

13.01.2022 Climate Crisis: National Day of Action. Feb 22 will stand out as a watershed moment with over 20 organisations coming together as the Climate Justice Alliance to speak out and march for climate action including Unions, School Strikers, Parents for Climate Action, socialists and climate groups. Speakers included * Jai Allan, Aboriginal man active with the Indigenous youth climate movement * Sim Ayres, a volunteer firefighter with 20 years experience who fought the Corryong fi...re this year. Sim is currently, a Lieutenant & crew leader with Strathbogie CFA. * Luke Hilakari, Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary * Finlay Carter, School Strike 4 Climate * Nahui Jimenez, Uni Students for Climate Justice The Climate Choir and the RiffRaff Marching Band emphasised the messages that another world is possible, that we can get to 100% renewables and we must do so fast - its time to declare a climate emergency. What to do next? Stay tuned for the Climate Justice Alliances next organising meeting. Next steps include: March 13 - National Day of Action called by Uni Students for Climate Justice 1pm at State Library. March 13 - Murdoch March to tell the truth (starts 5pm, Treasury Gardens - climate criminals will be "arrested"!) from May 2 - XRs Autumn Rebellion - creativity and passion welcome May 15 - the next massive School Strike. 13.01.2022 Cheap renewable energy is going to obliterate Australias coal export markets in the coming decade. "In Japan, where Australia sells nearly half its exported thermal coal, wind power was found to cost less than new coal plants and was expected to be cheaper than existing coal by 2028. Solar power in Japan was forecast to be a better option than new coal by 2023 and existing coal by 2026." Carbon Trackers new report lays bare the idiocy in investing in new coal. And metallurgical? ThyssenKrupp is not the only player in direct reduction of steel with hydrogen. Instead of beating our breasts about lost coal jobs we should be jumping on Garnauts Super Power train - 500% renewables, and exporting our clean electrons directly, as ammonia, or embedded in metals and finished goods. https://www.theguardian.com//wind-and-solar-plants-will-so

11.01.2022 Criticising environmental economist Nordhaus, JP Morgans very own researchers conclude, well, that things are so bad we might need a carbon price of $200-400 per ton (think rapid Greenland melt for starters). They bandy about terms like "non-linear", and offer withering criticisms of the Nobel prize winners underlying assumptions (discount rate and more). For a bank that has been the leading global fossil enabler this is a startling conclusion. Thanks to XRs Rupert Read (who else would you leak to) we are privy to the internal rumblings of this fossil financial behemoth. Take homes - theyre culpable, and get your money out now! https://newrepublic.com//planet-screwed-says-bank-screwed-

10.01.2022 It is time to reimagine a new future. Covid can accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, particularly if we organise together to counter vested interests and put the community first. Here are examples of cities looking to make increased cycle use much more permanent. https://www.bbc.com//20200429-are-we-witnessing-the-death-

09.01.2022 Newstead is going 100% renewable! The model is quite unusual and could be scaleable. 1) No subsidies, and viable on a merchant basis with longer contracts to attract investment for cheaper clean power 2) An unusual "all you can eat" tariff structure encouraging decarbonisation 3) Upfront engagement with the network provider. 08.01.2022 With a Biden Presidency, Australia is looking ever more isolated on climate. Morrison says using Kyoto credits is like getting ahead on your mortgage, but it is more like saying, darling, no dishes, because I did more than my fair share in my first marriage. Morrison contines to say he will not adopt the 2050 commitment unless I can tell them how we will achieve it, and what this will cost. https://www.theguardian.com//scott-morrison-signals-retrea

08.01.2022 In Forbes: Its time to participate in non-violent political movements wherever possible, Christiana Figueres writes in The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis," and Historically, systemic political shifts have required civil disobedience on a significant scale. Few have occurred without it. Greta and XR are held up as cures to the partisan lobbying and executive roadblocks that are worsening our climate emergency. https://www.forbes.com//former-un-climate-chief-calls-fo/

08.01.2022 Market Forces have notched up some big wins - organising shareholder activists so Australias big four banks put restrictions on lending to new thermal coal projects. Now they are looking at insurers, engineering and construction sectors and expanding overseas, leading actions against international banks in Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam. Coal and oil are looking really shaky right now. This is absolutely the right time to push, and help finally divorce the financial sector from fossil fuels. And we can do this at home. Learn more tomorrow night - RSVP here: https://lighterfootprints.org/event/market-forces/

08.01.2022 "wary about spending on expansions" "horror backdrop" "significant mine closures are required" - global coal price crashes are putting significant pressure on coal miners - highly inconvenient timing with several key players up for refinancing soon. This includes Adanis AAPT, Middlemount (with a new rescue loan at 10%), Centennial and Port Waratah Coal Services. This is just the right time to put pressure banks - join in Market Forces campaigns here: https://www.marketforces.org.au Ref: https://www.afr.com//coal-s-price-collapse-threatens-austr

08.01.2022 Boris Johnstone succumbs to the new Imperial Colleges finding that mitigation/herd immunity would create an extra 250,000 deaths and has moved to suppression - that is lockdown. Finally UKs schools are closed bar health and delivery workers kids. When is Australia going to give up on its dangerously delayed Covid-19 response, close schools and move education and work online? Imperial College Report: "the public health threat it represents is the most serious seen in a respiratory virus since the 1918 H1N1 influenza pandemic", calls for multiple, combined interventions, including "social distancing of the entire population. https://www.imperial.ac.uk//Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-m

07.01.2022 2020 Vision: Climate Solutions with Simon Holmes a Court in his annual update on energy policy and solutions. The short point is that we have 70% available to transition now, so whats stopping us? Learnings are found out in the field, not in the lab - we dont have to wait for more R&D in Morrisons yet another kick the can down the road Technology Target designed to obfuscate real climate action. No. Like Mike Cannon Brookes we can just get on with, now cheaper, renewables and storage. Cheaper prices will come from the supply chain, engineers and financiers. Electrify everything, go to clean energy. Personal action is just a start, we have to decarbonise daily life so the unengaged are driving cheaper EVs and eating carbon free food. Its possible with strong community action and political change. https://cutt.ly/2020VisionLive

06.01.2022 Thanks guys for supporting William Potter and other school strikers in their efforts to "build back better" - we dont need Taylors gas led recovery - we need a large clean energy rollout, action on waste and forest protection! Here is his letter: Hi Eastern Melbourne Climate Alliance, My name is William Potter and Im an 18-year-old climate justice activist with Fridays For Future Australia and School Strike 4 Climate. ... Our team has written an open letter to the federal government demanding the Australian Covid-19 response is a Green Recovery economic plan which ensures that fossil fuel projects, expansions, bailouts and subsidies as well as rollbacks of environmental regulations that favour fossil fuel projects, will not be a part of the federal governments post-coronavirus stimulus package. Instead, encouraging transparent investment into creating jobs in renewable energy. We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider signing on to the open letter and sharing it to your social media platforms and email lists, if possible: https://greenrecovery.good.do/openletter/sign/ In solidarity and with thanks, William Potter Fridays For Future Australia School Strike 4 Climate Australia

02.01.2022 Murdoch's flagship The Australian runs at loss, yet it wields his power: profiles, polls, editorials, opinion pieces where climate denial is difficult to challenge. Himself and Lauchlan arrive and 2 days later our PM is gone. News Ltd's relationship with the Saudis is an open question over climate progress. Our kids are frankly scared. It's time to re-inhabit our own "democracy", and tell the truth about the extinction crisis. Shorter #ClimateEmergency facts here: https://extinctionrebellion.uk/the-truth/

01.01.2022 Medical professionals are calling out the health impacts of making and using gas (actually methane) - not just the more well known increases in asthma, but "congenital defects of the heart and nervous system". Methane is around 80x worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas, and gas industry pollutants such as benzene are carcinogens. 01.01.2022 Infectious diseases expert Dr Bill Bowtell, Australias world-leading AIDS/HIV campaign brains, "says the federal governments responses have been reckless and beyond stupid". ABCs resident medical expert, Dr Norman Swan, believes we will pay the price for our piecemeal approach in 14 days time: "we dont have a day to waste". He accuses the Morrison government of not being straight with the public but rather using public relations Valium". 01.01.2022 Please eat, Svante and I say in chorus. Calmly, at first. And then more firmly. Until finally we scream, letting out all our fear and hopelessness. Eat! You have to eat, dont you understand? You have to eat now, otherwise youll die!" Then Greta has her first panic attack. She makes a sound weve never heard before, ever. She lets out an abysmal howl that lasts for over 40 minutes. We havent heard her scream since she was an infant. I cradle her in my arms, and Moses lie...s alongside her, his moist nose pressed to her head. Greta asks, Am I going to get well again? Of course you are, I reply. 01.01.2022 Are we drowning or waving? Higher CO2 raises temperatures which increases the moisture carrying capacity of the atmosphere - that's where Australia shudders yet again with the impact of yet one more "once-in-100-year" cyclone or flood. Thanks XR Reds for pointing out the consequences of not acting on the #ClimateEmergency. Step up: RSVP in Melbourne: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/melbourne-autumn-rebellion
