23.01.2022 I didn’t know you treated . . . Most people associate seeing chiropractors for neck pain, headaches, middle back pain, lower back pain and sciatica. ie, anything to do with the spine. Most Chiropractors will spend their time with you assessing the spine and nervous system as the priority, but as Chiropractors, we are trained to look at how the whole body is functioning.... Having completed my International Chiropractic Sports Science Diploma (ICSSD), I have always looked at the whole body, and how everything is interconnected. It is very common for me to adjust shoulders, ribs, jaws, hips, knees and feet. Pretty much wherever you have a joint and muscles, I can check and see if it is moving properly. If you have had a non spine related issue, don’t hesitate to ask me to check it out next time you are in. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #geelong #surfcoast #torquay See more

23.01.2022 What's your favorite winter soup recipe? The Eade Family are big fans of this one, Creamy Vegan Cauliflower Soup by ... This is a soup recipe that I have made in my family that everyone enjoys. It’s particularly good if you are wanting to reduce your dairy, without having to sacrifice that ‘creamy’ taste. So for us it’s a winner and I love that it’s so easy and quick to prepare. - Amanda Eade (Mum of 3) 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion chopped 1-2 cloves of garlic 1 tsp dried thyme 1/2 tsp dried rosemary 1 large cauliflower 2 cups of vegetable stock 1 1/2 cups of milk (plant based - this could be either coconut milk, almond, rice - whatever you prefer) Salt and pepper to taste Method Saute the onion, garlic, thyme and rosemary in the oil. Add the chopped up cauliflower to the pot along with the stock and plant based milk and simmer until all ingredients have softened. Blend until smooth Add pepper and salt to taste Tip: Sometimes I add 2-3 potatoes if I’m after an extra thick soup and it works out beautifully. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #winter #geelong #melbourne #aguidetogeelong #aguidetobarwonheads #aguidetooceangrove See more

22.01.2022 HOW MUCH SUGAR IS HIDING IN YOUR DRINK? We've all said to ourselves, ''I’ll just get a healthier drink.'' You know the story.... You are getting some take away lunch, you go to the fridge to get a drink and you make the healthy choice to avoid the soft drink and go for the juice or milk. You may be surprised at how much sugar is actually in the ‘healthy choice’. Below is a list of common drinks and their sugar content. Most of us would be surprised to think that Pomegranate juice (No: 4 - 13.1grams of sugar per 100ml) and Oak Strawberry milk (No: 20 - 11.2grams of sugar per 100ml) have more sugar in it than Coca Cola (No: 33 - 10.6grams of sugar per 100ml). So in real terms, a 600ml strawberry milk drink will have 67.2 grams of sugar (16 teaspoons of sugar). According to Food Standards Australia, the recommended daily intake of sugar for an adult of a healthy body mass index is 50 grams of ‘free’ sugar per day (12 teaspoons). But other sources recommend 9 teaspoons per day. Either way, just one of these drinks will often account for more than your daily recommended intake of sugar. It is especially important to be mindful of this when we are choosing a drink for our children. Check out the list on this post What drink surprised you the most? #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth

20.01.2022 Chiropractic care offers a unique approach to healthcare by focusing on restoring optimal movement to the joints and normalizing neurological function. Treatment is designed to allow the body to function at its best by finding areas of the body that are misaligned or not moving properly. These areas of dysfunction often result in tension and tightness in the supporting muscles, and altered joint neurological function. If not corrected, overtime this may result in chr...onic pain and dysfunction, leading to things like tension headaches, neck and back pain. 19.01.2022 Our Chiropractor, Dr Shane's philosophy when it comes to treatment, is to have many tools in his toolbox, so that he can use what is appropriate for each individual. This can be based on his clinical experience, the patients preferences and any underlying conditions that someone may have. If you've had an adjustment before you may have seen this clicking gun thingy, otherwise known as an Activator. This is one of the tools chiropractors use. Shane finds this grea...t for any of his patients who don't like the joints cracking, or for our younger and older patients. It is a very gentle way to get adjusted. Each patient is an individual with different needs, so Shane will work with you to determine the best approach to get the best outcomes. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth See more

17.01.2022 Can you teach and old dog new tricks? Yes! The cutting edge science of Neuroplasticity tells us that the brain can change itself. For many decades, science believed that the neurons (brain cells) in our brain and nervous system never changed from what we were born with. We now know this not to be true.... Neurons that fire together, will wire together. Meaning, the more we practice something new, the more our neurons will re-form and make new connections, (think about the first time you rode a bike or swung a golf club, then how much easier it become over time). So, if you want to improve your brain function, try something new It can be as simple as brushing your teeth with the opposite hand, learning an instrument or trying some meditation / mindfulness. If you are feeling a bit stuck in a rut, listen to some different podcasts or music, or drive to work a different way. Try anything a bit different, and see what happens. You will literally be re-wiring your own brain in the process. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #neuroplasticity #brain #geelong #melbourne See more

13.01.2022 Are you feeling stressed? You may be in a state of Fright, Flight or Fight? You may have heard of this saying before. It relates to how our body will react to a stressful situation. This reaction is driven by the brain and nervous system and is designed to save our lives.... Imagine you were a caveman and a sabre tooth tiger (stressor) started to chase you. After the initial fright, we would make a split second decision to either fight or run away (flight). For either of these decisions to be effective, some pretty amazing things have to happen to our body’s physiology to enable us to survive. Some of the things that happen are: Your heart rate speeds up to get blood pumping to the muscles needed to run or fight Blood pressure increases - to get the blood to the muscles faster Cholesterol increases - it helps in blood clotting and wound healing Stomach and digestion stops functioning - you don’t need to digest food when fighting for your life Blood sugar levels increase - need to get energy to cells and tissues quickly These are just some of the functions that occur normally when our sympathetic nervous system is activated. (Doesn’t it also sound a bit like some common chronic health conditions that many people experience?) Once we are safe, our parasympathetic nervous system will kick in to calm us down and our physiology will go back to a normal resting rate (homeostasis) The trouble with many of us today, is that we live in a society where we are bombarded by stressors almost 24/7 . For many of us, our sympathetic nervous system never gets a chance to fully switch off - it is like we feel we are being chased by a tiger all of the time. So, while we can take medication to lower blood pressure or lower cholesterol and take herbs/ supplements to help our digestion, how often do we stop to assess our life and see if we are being chased by a tiger (or three)? #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #geelong #surfcoast #melbourne #australia See more

12.01.2022 I guess its just old age This is one of the most common things I hear people say to me to explain why they are sore or have been told they have ‘arthritis’. Well. Let me ask you two questions . . . ... If your neck has arthritis due to old age, then how old is your elbow? If your elbow is the same age as your neck, then why doesn’t it have any arthritis? We know from studies, that joints that are not moving properly will be exposed to more mechanical stress, which in turn creates uneven wear to joint cartilage, resulting in inflammation to the joint capsule and supporting ligaments. This often leads to pain on movement, so the muscles around the joint will tighten up to protect the joint. This can cause stiffness and tightness and add further to the loss of movement. Left unchecked over time, this abnormal stress can result in bone spurs (osteophytes) that can impinge on nerves as they exit the spine. This bone spurring, loss of disc height and roughened joint cartilage is what gets labelled as ‘arthritis’. So rather than look at this as a progressive deterioration that will get worse over time, it makes sense that the joints may benefit from movement to keep them as mobile and free as possible. Chiropractors have many different techniques to help free up joint movement, helping you to not only move better, but to feel better too. Don’t leave pain and stiffness too long before you get it checked See more
11.01.2022 Being active and exercising can help maintain your spinal health and overall wellbeing. Whether it’s going to the gym, jogging, swimming or walking, physical activity can help manage back and neck pain. Australian Chiropractors Association have some great tips on how different forms of exercise can support your spinal health : > Running Activities like running and fast walking may help strengthen your spine, also benefiting heart health and fitness .... > Weightlifting Lifting weights is great for anyone trying to maintain a healthy spine and lifestyle. Weightlifting can tone your muscles and boost metabolism, as well as help improve posture and stabilize your spine. Ensure you learn the correct techniques by seeking the help of a professional. > Cycling A low impact sport, cycling can help improve posture and flexibility and is an aerobic activity, meaning your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. Plus it’s a great way to commute, enjoying the great outdoors and exploring new trails and paths. What's your favorite form of exercise in winter?
11.01.2022 Painkillers - How safe are they So the question needs to be asked ‘Why are we as a population, regularly taking painkillers?’ Most people will visit a chiropractor because they have an ache or pain or a symptom that is bothering them, usually it has been hanging around for a while and ‘hasn’t gone away’ by itself. In my time as a chiropractor it has become obvious that the majority of people think it is normal to ignore their symptoms or mask their pain and keep ...‘soldiering on’. As mentioned in our previous post on 'Headaches', pain is the bodies way of sending us a signal that something is wrong and needs our attention So next time you find yourself reaching for a painkiller or anti inflammatory, ask yourself : 1. What am I masking here? What is my body trying to tell me? 2. Is it safe to keep taking these over a long period of time? 3. What else could I be doing to get to the cause of this pain? Chiropractic care can offer some safe and proven treatments for many conditions. Maybe its time to get your spine checked by a chiropractor, who may be able to offer you not only relief, but some insights into how to prevent the pain from recurring. You can book in on 5229 2297.

This answer is so common, but over the years it has made me think the following : Why do people think it is normal to get a headache? Why do people think it is normal to take a painkiller to get rid of a headache? Without being pedantic about grammar and semantics, I would suggest that there is confusion about whether something is ‘'normal’' or ‘'common'’. I think that it is ‘'common'’ to get a headache, but that having a headache is not ‘'normal'’. By this I mean that our default human potential should be to exist without having to experience a headache on a regular basis. As I have written about in earlier posts (What is pain?), I believe that the headache is a symptom to let us know that something isn’t right in our body. The most common cause of headaches is a ‘tension type’ headache or ‘cervicogenic’ headache. Which basically means that tension in the muscles, ligaments and vertebrae in the spine can refer pain to the head. As a chiropractor I specialize in looking for the areas of the spine and muscles that may be contributing to these types of headaches. So rather than reaching for another painkiller or anti-inflammatory, it might be time to check and see if there is an underlying cause to these headaches. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #pain See more

08.01.2022 Should I use a heat pack or ice pack when I have an injury? Shane shares below when ice or heat is an appropriate choice! When to use ice? ... First choice if you have a recent injury. Pain is sharp or causing a pinching feeling when you move. Ice helps to reduce inflammation/swelling, and may offer good pain relief. How to use ice (acute or re aggravation of an existing injury) Wrap your ice pack in a towel so that the ice doesn't directly touch the skin as it can cause a burn. Place the ice pack onto the area for 10-15 minutes, keep area elevated if appropriate. Take off for 10-15 minutes Reapply for 10 -15 minutes, Keep compression bandage and elevation if appropriate. Wait 1 hour and repeat process. This process should be performed for the first 24-48 hours after the injury. When to use heat? Chronic injury or muscular stiffness The area feels stiff, tight or sore Heat will stimulate blood flow to an area, helping to remove any waste products built up in the tissues and bring in fresh oxygenated blood to the area, may reduce pain. How to use You can use either a microwaveable 'wheat bag' or hot water bottle. Heat up according to the operating instructions. Remember that it should feel bearable on the area, not scolding hot. Apply to area as long as feels comfortable. Dr Shane will often show stretches or exercises that can be performed when the area is heated up, such as neck stretches for example, be sure to ask about these at your next appointment. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #injury #geelong #surfcoast #melbourne #aguidetogeelong See more

06.01.2022 We hope you’ve all had a great weekend! We’re happy to be back in the clinic ready for a great week here at East Geelong Chiropractic. After our last post on headaches, we thought it would be a good follow up to chat about PAINKILLERS - and look at the question, ‘How safe are they really’... So the question also needs to be asked ‘Why are we as a population, regularly taking painkillers?’ Most people will visit a chiropractor because they have an ache or pain or a symptom that is bothering them, usually it has been hanging around for a while and ‘hasn’t gone away’ by itself. In my time as a chiropractor it has become obvious that the majority of people think it is normal to ignore their symptoms or mask their pain and keep ‘soldiering on’. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth See more
06.01.2022 | A LOOK AT HOW STRESS IMPACTS OUR BODIES | Are you in a state of Fright, Flight or Fight? #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth #geelong #surfcoast #melbourne #australia See more

05.01.2022 Have you ever wondered, 'After my presenting symptoms go away, how often do I need to get treatment?' This is a common question I am asked all of the time, and it has no definitive answer. Everyone of us has a unique need for treatment, based on our individual circumstances.... What we do have in common though, are similar factors that contribute to how our bodies function, and what may cause us to seek treatment in the first place. Your symptoms may be due to an accumulation of everyday stressors on the body. We usually break this down to 3 main categories : 1. Physical stress: Repetitive work posture, carrying kids, previous accidents etc 2. Chemical stress. Food intolerance's, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, medications, work place toxins etc 3. Emotional stress: Work/ personal relationships, financial worries etc While we all experience these stressors at varying levels on a regular basis with seemingly no problem, as they accumulate over time, it can give rise to symptoms. So, how often you might need treatment will depend on : How much stress your body is dealing with on a daily/ weekly basis? How resilient it is at dealing with the stress? Sometimes we might need more treatment than at other times. For example, if you have exams or a work assignment and are bent over a computer for weeks at a time; or if you have spent a whole week laying tiles or landscaping . A lot of people find it beneficial to have their spine checked and adjusted on a regular basis, to be able to find the tension before it gets to a crisis point. Even without obvious symptoms, Chiropractors are trained to find areas of the spine that aren’t functioning properly. Speak to us if you want individual guidance on how often an adjustment may be recommended for you. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth See more

Ensure your screen is at the height of your eye line when looking straight ahead. 2. If you can, use a separate keyboard and mouse to your laptop keyboard and mouse. Your arms should sit at a 90 degree angle when using the keys and mouse. 3. Okay, I know I only said 2 steps. 05.01.2022 Who has more bones in their neck? A giraffe or human? Would you believe it is the same as humans? It's seven! The human body is quite remarkable! The average adult spine is made up of 26 vertebrae, approximately 220 ligaments, 100 joints and 120 muscles, all protecting our spinal cord which is constantly relaying messages to and from our brain to the rest of our body. Chiropractors specialize in the spine - how it moves and how it functions. Chiropractors unders...tand that when the vertebrae in the spine are not moving correctly this can cause pain , stiffness and other symptoms, but that it also has an effect on how the nervous system functions. This is important, because we know that the brain and nervous system controls and coordinates all functions in the body. 04.01.2022 With lockdowns here in Victoria, we've been seeing quite a few sore neck and backs in the clinic due to all this time working from home and not having a great desk set up. Working from home can mean you're even less inclined to get up and move around also. Here's some ideas to keep you moving and reduce stiffness and soreness in your muscles, remember this includes kids too. > Drink 1.5-2L of water throughout the day. This can also include herbal teas. ... > Set reminders every 30 minutes to stand up, walk around and stretch. Hunching over a computer causes tension and strain in your neck and shoulders. > Implement an afternoon squat-o-clock. Put on your favorite song and get some squats in. > Book a lunch break into your calendar, go outside and get some fresh air, this could include going for a walk. > Take your meetings on your phone standing up and walk around the house if you can. 03.01.2022 Ever wondered what different ways you can get a chiropractic adjustment? My philosophy in practice is to have many tools in my toolbox, so that I can use what is appropriate for each individual. This can be based on my clinical experience, the patients preferences and any underlying conditions that someone may have. Some of the styles I use are :... * Traditional manual chiropractic - often simplified as the ‘cracking’ style. This is where the joints are moved very quickly with the least amount of force to overcome the tension of the surrounding muscles. It will often result in a cracking sound, that is not painful. * Drop table - this is where we use a table that drops to assist with the adjustment. This is a great way to also adjust any hips, knees and shoulders. * Activator - the clicking gun thingy. This is great for anyone who doesn’t like the joints cracking, or for those younger and older patients. A very gentle way to get adjusted! * Soft tissue therapy - I also like to use some specific myofascial trigger point therapy to target any ‘knots’ that the muscles may be holding. Each patient is an individual with different needs, so I will work with you to determine the best approach to get the best outcomes. #chiropractic #health #wellness #backpain #neckpain #support #healthylifestyle #chiropracticadjustment #getadjusted #spine #physicaltherapy #sport #sportschiro #mobility #holistichealth See more
03.01.2022 Great question!! This is commonly asked by new patients who may be apprehensive about what the sound really is, but they are often surprised to know that they sound isn’t made by the bones. Here's the explanation :... Our joints have a capsule that surrounds them, and within the joint is a fluid called the ‘synovial fluid’. When a joint is moved really quickly (like with an adjustment) it changes the shape of the joint which creates a partial vacuum. This then changes the pressure within the joint, causing gas bubbles to form and pop. So the cracking sound is actually just ‘gas bubbles popping’. See more

01.01.2022 At the end of a long day or busy week, here's one simple tip from @sarahappleford_nutrition that you can do to support your bodies ability to manage stress and reduce anxiety : All you need to do is lay down on the floor and position your legs up the wall. You can use a pillow or a bolster to make yourself more comfortable. Close your eyes, and rest in this position for 10 minutes or so.... This helps to bring balance back to your nervous system. When we are busy / stressed / overwhelmed our sympathetic nervous system kicks in (also known as fight or flight response), laying with your legs up the wall helps to activate the opposite, the parasympathetic nervous system, in this space your body is able to rest and restore.
