24.01.2022 Yesterday the Royal Perth Bentley Group Mental Health Division hosted a PRIDE Fair Day event to show their support for the LGBTI+ community. Due to the impact of COVID-19, Perth’s annual PRIDE Fair Day celebrations did not go ahead, however, RPBG Mental Health staff are committed to ensuring our staff, consumers and visitors have access to appropriate community networks and resources that promote LBGTI+ mental health, physical health care support and meet Rainbow Tick Accredi...tation Standards. This event was hosted during Trans-Awareness Week and saw organisations who work in the LGBTI+ arena including Pride WA, TransFolk of WA, Richmond Wellbeing, Ruah, Living Proud WA, GRAI - GLBTI Rights in Ageing Inc, Western Australia Police Force, SHQ - Sexual Health Quarters, Women's Council for Domestic & Family Violence Services - WA, Wungening Aboriginal Corporation and the Youth Pride Network - YPN come together at the various RPBG sites to share information about their services and supports for the community. Thank you to our staff that continue to demonstrate the EMHS value of Kindness and help us to deliver inclusive services for those from sexual, gender and bodily diverse backgrounds.

23.01.2022 Clinical Nurse Adele Wall is part of the EMHS Quarantine Hotel Outreach Team that assists with testing, treatment and support of individuals undertaking mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine, following international or interstate travel. Having worked primarily on the Acute Medical Unit during her 15 years at Royal Perth Bentley Group, Adele explains her time on the Quarantine Outreach team has been a unique experience. It has certainly been an eye opener, said Adele, I hav...e had the opportunity to speak with such a diverse mix of people from the wider community. While a typical day in the Quarantine Outreach Team might may not be physically demanding, Adele explains that a large part of their daily workload is communicating with quarantined individuals and this can, at times, be mentally taxing. Each shift there is non-stop communication between the quarantine public who in most part are not thrilled to be there but our job is to be there to help and support others, and I always try to do that to the best of my ability. Our role is very much about protecting the wider WA community and minimising any risk of COVID spread, but it’s also important that we are empathetic and that these individuals have the opportunity to voice their concerns. Some phone calls can be more challenging than others, but you always get that one call that will set you in to a fit of laughter which makes it all worth it at the end of the day. We try to advocate as best we can and provide support or solutions where appropriate. Prior to beginning her career in nursing Adele was enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy and credits her military experience and her parents for instilling in her strong values and moral principles, which she applies to her daily life and work. All of the EMHS values resonate with me and as healthcare professionals we all need to demonstrate kindness, respect, accountability, integrity, collaboration and excellence if we are to do our job efficiently and competently, said Adele. EMHS staff continue to play a vital role in the WA Health COVID-19 response, thank you Adele for your continued commitment to the health and safety of WA and for embodying each of our EMHS values when delivering compassionate care under such unique circumstances.

22.01.2022 As part of our Excellence Symposium video series we are delighted to introduce the second video which showcases the excellent work of the St John of God Midland Public & Private Hospitals' Hospital Avoidance Response Team (HART). The multidisciplinary team is made up of an occupational therapist, a clinical nurse and a social worker who provide continuous care to patients at risk of readmission to the hospital and who would benefit from enhanced care coordination and support with self-management of their diseases and health issues. 18.01.2022 True to their mantra of always putting others first, Armadale Kalamunda Group staff have had an exceptionally challenging year but still found time to organise a collection of toys and food for those in need. Lead by the hospital’s Aged Care Assessment Team, (ACAT), the initiative resulted in more than 200 toys and food hampers being donated by staff. To truly get into the spirit, Clinic Clerk Jacquie Well even built a sleigh to house the gifts during the collection!... Jacquie and Senior Social Worker Lina Hurley were on hand this week to help Department of Communities Steph DiGiovanni load up the gifts and then wrap them, ready for distribution to local children and their families in the Armadale area. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of staff we had donations from all sections of staff from Patient Care Assistants and administrators to doctors, nurses and an array of allied health care people and everyone in between, said Lina. It was really nice for us to be able to do this and help others in our own local community. Merry Christmas! : Lina Hurley, Jacquie Well (back) and Steph DiGiovanni (front) with the sleigh and gifts.

18.01.2022 We wish all EMHS staff, volunteers and our community a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to RPH Emergency Physician Dr Stephen MacDonald, who has received a Department of Health / Raine Medical Research Foundation Clinician Research Fellowship. Sepsis is a life-threatening illness where the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues causing organ failure and shock. Each year in Australia over 8,000 people die of sepsis, and many who survive have severe permanent disability. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to successful treatment, and Dr MacDonald’s research will involve how to improve survival from sepsis.

12.01.2022 Searching for an innovative way to capture the attention of visitors, patients and staff during International Infection Prevention Week, a small group of AKG staff have entertained passers-by in the hospital with an informative performance about personal protective equipment (PPE). The global coronavirus pandemic has raised awareness of the benefits and appropriate use of PPE for infection prevention to help minimise the risk of the virus spreading. To further this awareness,... the group, consisting of the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Management team and Staff Development Educators, performed a choreographed dance to highlight the importance of the correct donning and use of PPE. The team’s message is simple make sure you always follow best practice, maintain your skillset and stay on top of PPE training highlighting why we should remain vigilant to protect our community; to keep ourselves, our patients, colleagues and loved ones safe and strong.

08.01.2022 Royal Perth Hospital Outpatient Clinic Rooms were recently used to support the University of WA (UWA) WA Medical Students Society (WAMSS) annual mock Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) event for final year medical students, which included the inaugural use of telehealth stations. Royal Perth Bentley Group Telehealth Coordinator, Nandhini Natarajan and A/Outpatient Manager Kim Hill coordinated four telehealth virtual rooms and video links to assist WAMSS to host anothe...r successful event. These stations consisted of a final year student hosting a consult with a remote patient and examiner who were dialing in via HealthDirect video conferencing. As the use of digital technology in healthcare becomes more prevalent, read about how these digital healthcare scenarios provided valuable experience for the future medical professionals of WA who have previously only experienced face-to-face clinics or shadowed medical teams on hospital wards.

04.01.2022 Today is White Ribbon Day a day that brings people together to raise awareness about gendered violence within our community, and encourages us to have meaningful conversations about the actions we can all take to stop men’s violence against women. This year the aim of White Ribbon Australia has been captured by the theme Ending violence against women. Community by community. Workplace by workplace. This theme is reflected in our values of kindness, respect and accountabi...lity that we commit to each day at EMHS. We do this by providing compassionate care, and consistently looking at ways we can improve healthcare access to those experiencing gendered based violence. We are also committed to creating services and environments within EMHS where all staff, patients, their careers and visitors, are empowered to be active bystanders, and feel safe to call out behaviours that do not meet our values. The RPH Social Work Department brought people together with a fundraising morning tea to raise money for the elimination of gendered violence, with proceeds going to White Ribbon Australia (now under the custodianship of Communicare). Thank you to Social Work for organising the event and for everybody who participated. Learn more about White Ribbon Day: https://events.whiteribbon.org.au//join-a/whiteribbonday20
